Lancer, just a note, I too have the crashes *only* in single player... I very rarely, if ever, crash in multi-player.

Erm.. For some reason, I get sound stuttering in multi-player, but the game resumes normally after a few seconds.. *shrug*. At least HALF of this game works.. lol

Having the same freeze/loop problem. Surprise, surprise.

PIII 533 MHz, 128Mb RAM
NVidia GeForce 256
Soundblaster PCI 128
Windows 98

The usual deal that people have expressed here -- about 10 minutes in, the game freezes, and the sound repeats like a bad hip-hop song. Alt-F4 and the three-finger-pinch don't work. I've turned off extensions, switched shadows to simple, and sacrificed a small goat, but nothing seems to stop it.

I shelled out $60 for the super-special edition of this game, and all I currently have for my money is two older games I'll never played, an admittedly nifty keychain, and a tin box. The main reason I wanted JKII, the actual _game_, is currently fit for coaster duty only.

Raven/Lucas: I work for a game developer, and I have to say your lack of response on this thread is shameful. I'm not expecting you to wave your hand and make it all better, and I'm fully aware that deadline pressures and such can lead to good people releasing buggy games (not that I'm condoning it, but that's the current state of the industry). A quick note saying "problem noted, working on a patch," however, would be a wholly appropriate way of making the increasing number of angry people on this thread feel like they're doing something other than howling into the void.

(And, of course, if you're _not_ working on a patch ... that's another matter.)

Edit: single-player mode. Haven't even bothered trying multiplayer.

After trying EACH AND EVERY DAMN ONE of the supposed fixes that have been mentioned in this enormous thread, and a few of my own (holy water and Father Merrin notwithstanding)...I stumbled upon the cure, and I've been able to FINALLY play this incredible game without ANY FREEZES or crashes whatsoever.

The only catch is that you're going to need to have Return to Castle Wolfenstein on your hard drive. Not really a bad thing, because if you don't have it...you're really missing a great FPS. After downloading the latest Wolfenstein patch (v1.31), all my problems in JKII: JO were resolved. Is this due to the common use of the QIII engine? Or is it just kismet? Hell, I don't know...but i'll be damned if JO isn't running like a champ now.

Just for the record, my system specs are:

AMD T-Bird 1.2 GhZ
Gladiac nVidia GeForce 3
380 Mb RAM
SB 128

If you're as frustrated as I was, do yourself a favor and get your ass to Mars...uhm, I mean get with the clicking over to www.activision.com/games/wolfenstein/downloads/files.html) and stop being pissed and take your first step into a larger world.

I find your lack of faith disturbing,

Ok Raven, now I am getting pissed. The game is now constantly freezing in single player and a lot in multi for me and others. Why do you constantly screw up when you make games and take forever to acknowledge anything and fix it?!! There is absolutely nothing wrong with my computer that this game should freeze all the time.

On doing a bit of research on the problem, I have come to the conclusion that JK:O is especially sensitive to the problem involving hte SBLive! soundcard and certain VIA chipsets.

For the records I have :

Dual PIII 800EB
ECS D6VAA motherboard with VIA 686B chipset
SBLive! Value
ATI Radeon VE
Windows 2000 SP2

There is a known problem withe Live! cards and the 686B chipset that was supposed to have been fixed in the 4-in-1 driver version 4.31 and above. Tests have shown that the driver update did not resolve the issue.

What I can say is that the non-professional "Georges PCI Latency Patch" does seem to have solved my problem (I spent 3 happy hours playing yesterday and was actually able to shut the machine down myself!)

The patch is available form the Viahardware website at VIA 686b & Soundcards (http://www.viahardware.com/686b_1.shtm)

Please note that this fix applies ONLY if you have the VIA 686b chipset and a SBLive! soundcard, do not run the patch if you do not have this setup as it could damage your machine.

If you are unsure wether your machine has the 686b chipset, check your motherboard manual, or alternatively download a copy of SiSoft Sandra which will give you information on your hardware setup.

I too have this person to thank for bringing this to my attention. After long thought (because Georges PCI Latency Patch could possibly damage your system, I said to hell with it and used it. Amazingly enough, ALL MY RANDOM FREEZE AND SOUND LOOP PROBLEMS ARE GONE in both multiplayer AND single player!!!! :D

I suggest to anyone who has these problems and the hardware mentioned in this persons post to get this patch and install it. The problem is DEFINITLY A SOUNDBLASTER LIVE!! issue. THANK YOU SO MUCH VYPR!!! YOUR THE MAN!!!! :D

Hey, i've tried the wolfenstein patch, the george's latency patch, and all that jazz....along with EVERYTHING else that has been suggested on this board, and by Raven (defrag, clean install) and still nothing. Nothing works. Nothing at all....it still locks up, 90% of the time before i even get out of the start up screen. I CANT EVEN CONFIGURE MY FREAKING CONTROLS WITHOUT IT LOCKING UP!!!! Something HAS to be done about this crap......I'm getting really fed up with this. I would suggest that everybody stop posting these half-arsed fixes (even though SOME work for SOME people), and let Raven or Lucasarts get off their butts and fix THEIR OWN PRODUCT!! If you wont fix it, at least acknowledge that there IS a problem. Geez...

THis is gonna sound strange, but I think I've fixed my problems by changing my mouse and OS.

I originally had WinME and a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer. The game was crashing on my every 10 minutes (I mean hard freezing) and my mouse was dying all the time (only in JO).

I did a clean install of WinXP, which got rid of the graphical stuttering and sound loops, and bought a Logitech dual optical. The game's running great for me now. If it starts to act up again I'll let yah'll know.

Now I know not everyone was running WinME or had an Intellimouse Explorer, but just saying what worked for me. We shouldn't have to upgrade OS or reinstall the OS just to play a game. Here are my specs again:

Radeon 64 DDR VIVO
256MB Ram

Now using WinXP pro.

My game freezes and then I
receive a nice meesage stating that
the exe for jedi knight cause an
application error...

Yep. JK2S caused an error/fault in jk2gamex86.dll.....
I get that exact error about 40% of the time. The other 60% of the time it just freezes in a sound loop (and I have to do manual reboot). The gamma and screen resolution being screwd up with that error is a result of JkO crashing before it has a chance to set the display back to desktop settings. Its easy to set it back without a reboot, but my computer usually acts strange after that crash (Alt+Tab doesn't work anymore, etc)

My setup is Visontek TNT2
23/28 drivers (neither made a diff)
My sound card is an Aztech SC128 -3D (based upon S3 Sonic Vibes chipset)
256MB RAM, Win98,DX8.0/8.1 (no diff),

Here's a fix you may want to try, it solved the problem for me.

It turns out my memory couldn't handle the speed it was running at, even though I was running it at the speed and CAS Latency it was rated for. I downloaded this memory test program:
http://www.teresaudio.com/memtest86/)

Just put a blank floppy in your drive, run the install.bat, and boot off the floppy. It starts the test automatically. Pay close attention to test #5, its the one that failed for me. I lowered my bus speed, and it passed. So far, I've played over 5 hours of JK2 with no crashed, when previously the game would crash with 15-30 seconds.

updating my status...

To remind the situation :

- game stable in MP
- game has about 20% chance freezing when the launcher from the cd execute upon insertion of the CD
- the game has about 20% chance freezing when inserting the CD while the game run.
- game freeze in SP
==> freeze/sound loop
==> jk2.exe,dll and cie error back to desktop with strange gamma
==> other blue screen (less common)

since last time I tried PCI latency patch and the trick with Wolfenstein + path.

And no more freeze/sound loop
... but still the other bugs. :evil6:

No other software/game cause trouble.

I won't post my config here again you can find it on previous pages.

God, it's just getting worse and worse. I'm freezing all the time now! The game either freezes, or I get Windows "This program has performed an illegal........." and then I get to the desktop and it's all superbright!

<rant>
Raven, you've seen me from Hexen II, Heretic II, and Elite Force and I have to say "YOUR TESTERS SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I could've waited another 2 months for this game, you didn't have to release it now. First, you leave Hexenworld unfinished, loaded with bugs. Then you make Heretic II and take forever to make enhancements and then leave it at that. You took forever to patch Elite Force and released an overhyped boring expansion. Now you release what should be your best game and the thing is constantly constantly crashing! Everyone, don't stop bumping this thread! </rant>

Hey guys, an update on my part.

I just went to my BIOS settings and configured my RAM settings to make them slower, because I have a feeling that the whole freezing thing could be the result of the RAM overheating (One of them is Samsung, the other's Apacer) so you can imagine how prone they are to that sort of thing. I probably wouldn't have this problem if they were both Crucial.

Well, I haven't tried playing anything yet and I'm installing JK2 again as we speak, and I'm hoping, no... PRAYING that this will fix my problems.

I'll update you guys within an hour, or if it works, hopefully a day. :)

Okay, don't bother with the RAM thing.

I got it to work for a whole 45 minutes and even got through some pretty big firefights (20+ stormtroopers and grenades) LD and then when I least expected, it froze up with the looping sound and I had to cold reboot. :(

I was having so much fun, too. :(

I'm really pissed at Raven and LucasArts now. Since the get go, ive had this freezing. i havent played more than 10 minutes (in 30 second increments) since i got the game the week it came out. it freezes within 2 minutes in game, evn in the ****ing menus while i config my settings and controls! i havent played any SP and MP freezes within 2 minutes, even while loading map or in the menu.

Heya Havikar,

That fix only works if you're suffering from cache-related crashes in Multiplayer. Nonetheless, good job.

It's sad to see how many crash/freeze bugs there are with JK2. I mean, what's up with that? Are we just paying to be beta testers?

I've tried *everything* ever suggested on how to fix the problems. Nothing has worked for me so far. :(

Well, since I posted my "It's fixed" remark, I've had 3 or 4 freezes with sound loop. It's alot better now............but it's still not totally fixed. I'm just glad I can play MP on my other low end system. If I couldn't, I'd take it back to the store. I'm also really surprised that we have not had ONE comment from Raven in the thread. Not ONE!!! WTFIUWT??? Cmon Raven, let us know if you know about this problem and if your working on a patch.

hey guys , i didnt read through all of this stuff its way to much . but i had some problems too . i found a post that said to edit some stuff in my jediknight config file . open it with notepad and
and make some changes .
i will list a few things i did after reading them .

Open the jk2config (located in the GameData/Base dir) and edit the line:

seta s_UseOpenAL "0"

to :

seta s_UseOpenAL "1"

open the jk2config file in the BASE folder of the directory, and change/ add this stuff

seta s_khz "44" ............old value was 22( hz sound quality )

seta s_mixPreStep "0.0"..........these 2 cause the stuttering, change
seta s_mixahead "0.2"...........them to this, to remove all stutter!

seta com_soundMegs "32"
seta com_hunkMegs "128".......added these myself via wolf recomended

seta cg_runpitch "0.000"
seta cg_runroll "0.000"
seta cg_bobup "0.000"................change to this, removes bobbing,
seta cg_bobpitch "0.000"............increases framerate, and gives
seta cg_bobroll "0.000".........you a smoother movement and mouselook

seta com_maxfps "100"..........your refresh rate here for Vsync

seta r_lodbias "0"........ below 0, looks wayy better, above 0, looks worse, but framerate goes up some... this is Level of Detail area. ( try from -1.5, to 1.5 ), in increments of .5's

seta s_soundpoolmegs "32"........default was 24, more sound memory

seta r_ext_texture_filter_anisotropic "0".............. change to "0", then enable Bi-Linear filtering, and your ddesired Aniso filtering via unituner or something to use ATI aniso filtering, which coul go to 128x via registry hack.

i made these changes and all sound studdering went away . also make sure that very high detail is turned OFF . that is a big 1 . hope this helps .
now i made my sound khz to 44 . it was 22 .

OK, know what? Dont tell me I'm wrong. Don't tell me that I'm making unfounded claims about other games crashing the exact same way WHEN I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE FLIPPING CRASHES MYSELF.

To say that this is a JO specific problem is to be ignorant. This problem affects SEVERAL GAMES.

And know what? ITS NOT A VIA PROBLEM EITHER. I have ALi chipset in my motherboard, AND I STILL GET THE CRASH. I also do not have a soundblaster card. I have a hercules Game Theater XP.

Perhaps YOU are using RAVEN as a scapegoat. Ever think of that? Of course not.

As I have said, NOBODY I KNOW has solved this problem on purpose. Everyone I know has solved this by complete accident. And as far as I know, there IS NO UNIVERSAL FIX.

The reason installing things may help is because they mess with DirectX. And tell me, what else on your computer handles BOTH SOUND AND VIDEO.

After LOOKING AT EVERYONES SPECS and PLAYING OTHER GAMES WITH THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM, I have determined that THE ONLY COMMON FACTOR BETWEEN ALL THESE SYSTEMS IS WINDOWS/DIRECTX. IT IS NOT THE GAME/ENGINE BECAUSE ***THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS IN OTHER GAMES***

Jesus christ wtf is wrong with you people where you cant understand that THIS IS NOT A JEDI OUTCAST SPECIFIC PROBLEM.

I just NEED TO MAKE IT CLEAR that THE FREEZE/SOUND LOOP OCCURS IN OTHER GAMES THAN JEDI OUTCAST.

Let's assume that it is a DirectX problem. Maybe those that have gotten the game to work or have had it work can post their DXDiag info along with those that can't get it to work so we can see if there are any recurring discrepancies.

here's mine (for the can't run it group)

Hey guys,
I was at a friend's house and I think I made a [ small ] discovery about the jk2gamex86.dll crashes

Here is a link to the post I made:
http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=43815)

Bascially, I used cheats to summon some npc characters, and noticed that npc's with light sabers make the game crash
(Desaan, Luke, Jedi trainer).

Desaan spawns immediately with a saber. Luke and Jedi trainer have to draw theirs (usually) before the game goes kaput (jk2s.exe cause an invaild page fault in jk2gamex86.dll etc....)

Please tell me what you guys think might help, and whether anyone has notice the same thing.

XP 1700+
KT266A+ Mobo
Cable Modem
512 MB DDR 2100
GeForce 3

I was having the same problems with my computer that many people that have posted here are struggling with. I did the goose chasing with updating my drivers, tweaking the BIOS setting, disabling ACPI, yadda, yadda, yackity schmackity. I finally stumbled on a solution for my system. I had the lockups while loading the game and during but haven't had a single lockup since I made one small change. In my video driver properties is an option to specify the amount of system memory OpenGL can use for texture rendering in PCI mode. This was set to 5MB which looked rather small to me. It also appeared to be the problem because I could max all the game options EXCEPT for the texture detail, this had to be set at LOW. To make a long story short, I set the GL texture memory to 16MB, the maximum allowed. Voila', no more problems. On my system, in Windows XP rofessional, the setting is located as follows...

Display Properties>Advanced>Geforce3 Ti200>Additional Properties>OpenGL Settings.

I sincerely hope this helps some people. This thread gave me valuable insights in where to direct my troubleshooting and I've been close to chucking my computer out the nearest window. :)

Dude, are you on crack? QUIT USING FRIGGING CAPS.

It's apparent that your problems are not just limited to JK2 - good for you. However, it seems that the large majority of us are having problems only with JK2 - meaning that your hypothesis is bunk, so quit pushing it. I have had absolutely no problems with XP/DX/more games than you can shake a stick at prior to JK2. JK2 is the only game that is as fuxored as it is. CS? RTCW? Max Payne? THPS3? ST:BC? Etc..? They all work fine.

"WHEN I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE FLIPPING CRASHES MYSELF."

No doubt, you have. However, you are in the minority here, not the rest of us.

Wow, I'm actually surprised at how many people are having the same problems. I'm experiencing the seemingly random acts of freezing and sound looping. At usually occurs during the cinecmatics but also occurs when I go to the main menu during a game. I've only played SP and MP with bots (stupid firewalls). My system specs are:

AMD T-Bird 1 GHz with latest bios and motherboard drivers
256MB SDRAM
Nvidia GeForce 2 GTS/PRO with latest drivers
Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 X-Gamer (newest drivers that I could find)
DirectX 8.1
Windows 98 SE

Hopefully it's just a problem that can be resolved with a patch. I've tweaked all the settings in-game and what I'm willing to do on my system (can't afford to kill my PC with a paper due next week).

My JK2 problems have been fixed.

I reinstalled JK2 from my hard drive and that totally solved my problem.

For more details about my problem&solution, see this post I made:

I'm not sure why you'd need to alter your PCI texture settings when you're using an AGP card. Hmm, perhaps you should check your DXDIAG and see if you're running your card without AGP Texture Acceleration. Some of the new drivers (Well, everything after 23.11) has the tendency to make cards run in PCI-Compatability mode without AGP.

I'm running DirectX 8.1 with the newest Nvidia drivers (can't remember what they are off the top of my head) and DxDiag still recognizes my card as an AGP (Nvidia Geforce GTS/Pro 64MB DDR)

Hey guys, I had posted hear earlier also.

I had a GForce 3 card, 64MB, with the most current drivers. Crashed all the time.
I am running XP Pro, with 512MB Ram.
I tried turning off the open GL stuff, and that didn't work for me.

I was so fed up.

I just went to best buy, for $80, bought the ATI Radeon 7000 (PCI) 32MB. The game works perfect now! Awesome.

I know that everyone can't/won't go out an buy a new video card, but it worked for me. Good luck.

I use caps because YOU CANT SEEM TO GET MY ****ING POINT

THINK ABOUT IT FOR JUST ONE ****ING MINUTE. IF IT HAPPENS IN MORE THAN JO, **AND** OTHER GAMES, **AND** IT HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE BEFORE JO WAS RELEASED, THAT MEANS THE THE PROBLEM IS *******NOT******* THE ****ING FAULT OF JO YOU STUPID IGNORANT LITTLE ****

what I am trying to say is that THERE IS NOTHING RAVEN CAN DO TO FIX THIS ****ING PROBLEM.

I am also pissed because I cannot play the game because it keeps crashing from the freeze/sound loop.

BUT THERE IS NOTHING RAVEN CAN DO ABOUT IT. I would absolutely LOVE it if they were able to get a patch out to fix that particular crash. But since I've never seen a patch for ANY game to fix it, I sincerely doubt that they can do it.

You know, I take that back. Maybe it is the fault of JO. However, it is only that because of the fact that JO uses DirectX. Perhaps there's a certain DX file that sets off the reaction, since people have been experiencing this in other games after they install JO. But, it is NOT COMPLETELY the fault of JO.

If it were the fault of JO, there's an extremely small chance that it would affect other apps....as you said, all your other programs are working fine.

I'm fairly certain that this is an extremely difficult problem to duplicate, considering there is no common system component...

anyway, quit arguing. You are wrong. It's impossible for a game that hasn't been released yet to cause other games to crash. THEREFORE the problem does not lie in JO and its 99.99% likely that Raven cannot fix it.
