INTERVIEW: Episode II's Amy Allen
Thu, Apr 10, 03 09:22:12 AM EDT

We've got a new interview up in the Jedicouncil Interviews (http://www.theforce.net/jedicouncil/interview/amy_allen.shtml) section. This time, Amy Allen, aka Aayla Secura from Episode II. Here's a clip of the interview:

Mark: Any chance we’ll see more of Aayla Secura in Episode III?
Amy: I sure hope so! I have been in both Episode I & II. Third time’s a charm! I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Mark: And we along with you! Has Episode II affected your other work? And can you tell us anything else of your other projects?

Amy: Being a part of Episode II has made things very exciting, I spend a lot of time traveling and attending conventions. I have met some really incredible and nice people. One of the coolest things has been meeting Jan Duursema. Jan is the women who draws Aayla and she is a wonderfully kind woman, not to mention SO TALENTED!

For those of you who are interested, the official site, starwars.com (http://www.starwars.com/) has posted an online poll titled "Which of these background Jedi do you want to see again in Episode III?" (http://www.starwars.com/community/poll/) and one of the possible character vote choices is Aayla Secura. So go over there (http://www.starwars.com/community/poll/) and vote for Aayla, the blue Twi'lek Jedi Knight character created by Jan Duursema and John Ostrander who saw screen time in Episode II as played by Amy Allen! :)

I was reading thru the last 10 pages or so and ran across this.

If you're interested in doing your own art, look at Adobe Photoshop Elements. Its a $100 version of Photoshop. Its got the same major features as the expensive version, but at a normal-human price tag.

I've never used it, so I can't really comment on its functionality, but if you've never used any other art programs you probably won't have any complaints.

Hey, since you're the unofficial ruler of this thread I'll take that as permission to do a major flood of hundreds of megs of links and images... Oh wait, I only have a hand full of pics, here goes:

http://members.cox.net/groddahl/Images/Random_Aayla_Secura_01.jpg)

This was my first Aayla fanart. I had no idea at the time she had such a large and devoted fanbase, i just liked her from the movie. I had yet to read any of the comics. That's my lame first attempt at a Force "effect" up there. It's not detail-art, as you can tell by the completly *wrong* head, but I prefer styalized versions of popular characters.

Here's a much larger wallpaper version: http://members.cox.net/groddahl/Images/Random_Aayla_Secura_01_WP.jpg)

Here's a link to the slave outfit that AgentSmith posted earlier: http://members.cox.net/groddahl/Images/Random_Aayla_Secura_02.jpg)
I kinda wish I'd have done the bikini-top version from Rite of Passage. I think it looks a little better, but that's just me.

Here's what became a wallpaper sized image. Aayla is on Tatooine, taking off the hot jedi robe she sometimes wears when not adventuring. The background is a screenshot from the upcomming StarWars Galaxies. There is a large transdoshin lurking in that doorway behind her.

My personal favorite at the moment. It was inspired by the Elusion Illusion short story in SW Insider magazine. The art with the story didn't show Aayla in the outfit that was destribed in the story, so I took it apon myself to see what I could come up with. Yah, there's some Bloodrayne in there, but its all about the Aayla! :) Just as I finished this one, I shoehorned in the background texture from and though it would be cool if her lightsaber cast light on her and shadows formed behind her.

http://members.cox.net/groddahl/Images/Random_Aayla_Secura_04.jpg)

And the same image without the light/shadows, so you can see the details.

And the last one I have right now. It was sort of a request from Yodaminch. He wanted to see Aayla in the Battle of Geonosis. Horribly rendered with little to no research to fighting style or which Form she practices, here's what I came up with. I'd hate to be that droid. Good thing I didn't buy him to fight Jedi, I just found him free on Google.
http://members.cox.net/groddahl/Images/Random_Aayla_Secura_06.jpg)

I was dissapointed that most of the details were encoded out when I converted it to .jpg format and resized to reasonable dimensions. So, I croped it into a wallpaper sized closeup of Aayla.

Star Wars Tales 14. A lot of people didn't like the way Aayla was characterized and try to wish it away as an "infinity". But, she's in it, so I've got it. I'm still in the "I'll take what I can get" camp at the moment.

Vos shows up VERY briefly in Emissaries to Malistare and gives Mace a hand during a fight in Nar Shadaa.

leXX, that list is pretty complete, though as Random said Aayla appears in "Star Wars Tales #14", the "Tides of Terror" story. (The art is good but the characterization is a bit off indeed.) Quinlan Vos further briefly appears in "Emissaries to Malastare" and also in the story arc "Infinity's End" (which hasn't been bundled into a TPB yet).

Bundling everything Aayla & Quinlan have been in it should give this list:
- Dark Horse "Star Wars: Emissaries to Malastare" comic (Quinlan)
- Dark Horse "Star Wars: Twilight" comic (Aayla & Quinlan)
- Dark Horse "Star Wars: Infinity's End" comic (Quinlan)
- Dark Horse "Star Wars: Darkness" comic (Aayla & Quinlan)
- Dark Horse "Star Wars: The Stark Hyperspace War" comic (Aayla)
- Dark Horse "Star Wars: Rite of Passage" comic (Aayla & Quinlan)
- Star Wars Insider #62 magazine (Aayla cover)
- Dark Horse "Star Wars: Tales #14 - Tides of Terror" comic (Aayla)
- Dark Horse "Star Wars: Republic #49 - Sacrifice" comic (Aayla & Quinlan)
- Dark Horse "Star Wars: Republic #50 - Attack on Kamino -Brothers in Arms" comic (Aayla & Quinlan)
- Dark Horse "Star Wars: Jedi - Mace Windu" comic (Quinlan)
- Star Wars Insider #66 magazine - "Elusion, Illusion" (by Michael A. Stackpole)
- Dark Horse "Star Wars: Jedi - Shaak Ti" comic TBR (Quinlan)
- Dark Horse "Star Wars: Republic #54" comic TBR (Quinlan)
- Dark Horse "Star Wars: Jedi - Aayla Secura" comic TBR (Aayla)

There's also some Insider issues with related art and previews from the comics, would you like those references too?

Random, that's a very good observation! Khaleen from "Star Wars Republic" does seem to resemble Michelle Rodriguez!

Khaleen is a character designed by Jan Duursema and John Ostrander for "Star Wars", so I'm not sure if she's inspired on Michelle Rodriguez, but it is possible.
I posted at Jan Duursema's theforce.net thread to ask about it. Wonder what she'll say. :)

They sure need a sequal, I loved RE. She was bitten several times by zombies and infected. There's a great scene where she's out of reach above the zombies and squeezing blood from her wounds to taunt them.

Since it's been out for so long here's some spoiler info...
She became a zombie at the end and killed by the 'hero'. I don't see how she'd be in the second movie. Unless she played a twin sister or somehow brought back as a resurected zombie (zombie-zombie?). I never played the games very far, so I don't know what happend in the later ones.

She was also in that skidmark Blue Crush, but we won't hold that against her :p And a few others I've also never seen.

I asked comic artist and creator of Khaleen's character, Jan Duursema over at theforce.net about the apparent resemblance between Khaleen and Michelle Rodriguez.

Here's what Jan kindly replied, I quote:
"Oh my gosh! What an uncanny resemblence! Nope, I'd never heard of Michelle Rodrigez before you posted this. I was thinking of her 'type' when I developed the look for Khaleen though. She would make a great Khaleen--don't you think? Cool!"

Thanks for the feedback Jan! :) Cool that it's such a coincidence don't you guys think?

I do indeed. ;)

I just think Khaleen is great. After reading Republic #49, she stuck in my mind and I wanted to know more about her. I like her style so to speak. I love her outfit and purple hair, and the tatoo's and make-up are awesome. Jan certainly pencilled her beautifully. She also seems so innocent, even being a thief. There is just a charming vulnerability about her. Of course, the fact that she is in love with Quinlan also adds to it all.

I can't wait to see her in action again in Republic #54. :)

Silver Bullet Comics is having a "Star Wars Saturdays at Silver Bullet Comics" feature and on April, 19 they published this great interview, "A Conversation with John Ostrander and Jan Duursema" (http://www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com/features/105074255766497.htm).

It's a great interview with comic artist Jan Duursema and writer John Ostrander, about Star Wars, the comics, the Clone Wars, the Jedi and ... Aayla Secura. Head there (http://www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com/features/105074255766497.htm) and check it out, it's worth it! :)

I quote:
"JOZIC: Was it a real treat for you guys to see Aayla Secura, a character you created, make an appearance in Episode II?

OSTRANDER: Big time! Very, very cool!

DUURSEMA: How about creative thrill of a lifetime? When Chris Cerasi at LFL told me about Aayla's appearance in Episode II as I was finishing up the pencils on the Attack of the Clones adaptation, I was pretty sure I was dreaming. Then I got the photo reference for the character and was blown away with how beautiful she looked and how amazing the costume looked. I met Amy Allen, who plays Aayla, at Celebration II before I saw Episode II. We immediately hit it off and had a million things to talk about. And we both got to see the Aayla action figure being created right there at C2!"

I've also managed to score one of her trading cards and once I get that, send it off for an autograph. Then make a display case for it. work to do, work to do...

Random, do you mean the Aayla Secura TGC card (http://www.wizards.com/global/images/swtcg_expansion_sithrising_famous3LargePic_en.jpg) from the Sith Rising TGC game or the latest Wizards Aayla Secura promo postcard from the GAMA Trade show (http://www.worldfamouscomics.com/amyallen/store/aayla-secura-4-lrg.jpg) in Las Vegas?

In any case you can send that to Amy's PO Box as on Amy's official website (http://www.worldfamouscomics.com/amyallen/). I'm sure she'll enjoy seeing some of your fanart, you can always include a printout if you like.

If I'd known, you could have requested one, I'd have purchased and brought it from visiting Amy at last weekends Autographica con. :) It was an awesome con and great to see Amy again, I'll try and post some photos later on. :)
