Nar Shaddaa has gone the way of .. uh.. other lost files.

For those of you who have no clue what I'm talking about:
http://sine.geekvision.net/portfolio.html)

I was working on a JA SP level that took place on Nar Shaddaa.

To make a long story short, my old computer died a few months ago. The hard drive, with my map and accompanying files, were intact. So recently, a local company my dad is familiar with builds a new one. I made it very, very clear to this guy that it is essential that the old hard drive go into the new computer, with all the files on it.

... So...when he delivers it the first time, he's forgotten to stick it in. I send it back for him to install it. He does, and there are no files on it. I send it back a second time, for him to retrieve them. Now, some of the files, like the textures are there, but some essentials - the map and shader files namely - are gone. My dad gave me some bull**** about the overheated motherboard damaging the hard drive, but I have never known a damaged hard drive to erase only certain file types within certain folders, and still function perfectly. I guess, considering he was able to retrieve certain files, there's the remote possibility that he could try *again* and get them all back... but I don't really know, considering I don't even know what the problem was to begin with. I'm not holding my breath.

So... yeah, it's gone. I still have a few skins, models, sounds and textures that I may use as part of a new project, but most likely I'll just release them as is. Thanks to all the people who gave support, suggestions and textures.

Before you ask, no, I didn't have a backup. The old computer didn't have a burner, and my zip drive is broken.

If I lost a project I was working on for a year somebody would have to die. You must be very disappointed.

Do you have any snapshot files (mapname.map.0 to mapname.map.9, etc) or .bsp files you can reverse-compile?

you can retrieve files that have been deleted, even if you format your harddrive. look for a program called finaldata.

Unbelievable. It would have been such a cool level. Damn. I sure hope you have some back-ups you just didn't remember or the files can be saved.

There are so few SP levels as it is that we really couldn't afford things like this to happen. :(

Man, I'm so sorry. And of course I'm with the others hoping you have some kind of a forgotten backup or a tool to retrieve the data.

Man, thats a real shame, it looked so great :( My commiserations, you must be pretty depressed by this. As has been hinted, I think its well worth trying some more retrieval techniques and procedures, if there is a little hope of it working then it seems worth it for so much hard work.
