As some of you know on the 20th September I will be leaving home to go to University; this also means leaving my beloved computer at home. Anyway this means I am getting a laptop and I was wondering how good would you think a laptop is for playing Jedi Academy; I know it will have a smaller keyboad and everything (I may buy a seperate keyboard; not sure yet) but will it be worth it taking Jedi Academy with me to play on my laptop or will it suffer from performance issues.
My laptop specs will be:
Intel P4 Processor 2.8 Ghz
Slimline Casing
SIS 630ST Core
15" XGA TFT Display as Standard
512MB DDR PC2100 (266Mhz) memory
60GB 5400rpm HDD
DVDROM/CDRW Combo Drive
ATI Radeon 9000 64MB (TV Out)
SoundBlaster TM Compatible
Integrated Stereo
Internal 10/100 Mbps LAN
Internal 56Kbps V90 data / fax / voice
88 Key 19mm Pitch
2-Button Trackpad
Built In Camera
WindowsXP Home + Master CD
No Misc Software Included
Firewire Port & 2 USB
I know people may think what this guy is crazy of course it will run on a monster like that; however I have read in the older LucasArt games Readmes how perofrmance issues may occur with a laptop.
i think it will run, but u should get a mouse for your laptop, and maybe a keyboard
That is one monster laptop! Must have set you back a bundle...
; )
Anyway, I would think it would work fine. Did JK2 have issues with laptops? If not, I wouldn't worry.
The only thing I would do if I were you would be to have a full size USB optical mouse plugged into that thing. ; )

exactly what i was thinking :D.
would this work.
intel celeron 1.2 gz
256 mb
32 bit color
and i don't know the rest.
Just check the system reqs posted on the official site Blademaster.
; )
My friend had a 644 mhz labtop with a 5 gb harddrive and 128 mb ram with windows ME, and an intel integrated video card. And JO RAN on that thing! Of course it had some lag, but it ran.
Yours shouldn't be a problem as far as power. But the only issues that may occur are video card compatibility and perhaps windows xp ( ive heard of some xp errors occuring with games, but ive been fine so far).
Before I got my newer PC, I played JK2 online with my other PC. It was only a Pentium III 550Mhz with 256MB of PC100 memory, a Voodoo 3 16MB video card, and running Windows 2000 Pro. I was able to get about 35 frames/sec in multiplayer games with 16 people or less. 35 frames/sec isnt that great, but it did the job. I could hold my own against experienced players.
Laptops *do* require special consideration, as things are not always equal to the desktop parts.
Your CPU & memory and all of those core components are fine. The lowest part of your system is the video - it seems weak compared the rest. The ATI Mobility 9000 will surely run things fine, as JA is not a DX9 game or anything. However, it is an 'older' component, compared with the ATI mobility 9600 (which supposedly rocks), and the nVidia 4200 (Ti core) and the newer 5200 and 5650 (FX core) chips.
As a comparison, my last time through JKII was on my Dell Inspiron 8500, which has a 2.4GHz P4, and the nVid 4200 w/64MB. I can run 8x FSAA and 8x AF through the entire game at 1600 x 1200 until the swamp, when I have to tturn down to 2x.

Actually, the official specs mention a 'Directx9.0a compatible' graphics card with support for OpenGL 1.4
Whether this indeed has an effect on the game's performance on cards that are not Dx9.0a compatible is yet to be seen.
Anyway...am I right in thinking you would have to run the game at the optimal resolution for the display on a laptop to get the best performance? Scaling to different resolutions on LCD panels, etc., apparently can affect framerates...
Yep, that will do it. No problems.
Heck, that laptop is better than my home computer... Gah I hate my life :(

Scaling to different resolutions on LCD panels, etc., apparently can affect framerates... There's a big difference between a game that wants DX9 compatibility and one that fully implements features of DX9 ... but that's a discussion for another time and forum ;)
As for resolution, what you say is true to an extent, but is somewhat mitigated by the ability of the card to pump out the pixels. So ... despite my laptop's native 1920 x 1200 resolution, I tend to run at 1024 x 768 or 1600 x 1200, depending on what gives me the best FPS.

Thank you, i'll check on the offical web site.
At the time the EF2 demo came out, I was still using DX 8.1. I tried installing the demo just to see if it would run and it did.
The only trouble was when enemies appeared on the screen (you get attacked by a huge swarm of those stupid mine monsters) and then it got laggy. ; p
I'm not sure if that had anything to do with DX 9 not being installed or what...
I will definately upgrade for JA though, so we'll see if it makes a difference. Otherwise I can't really afford to upgrade right now...
Hopefully turning down the detail will fix any problems on my system.
(not to get off on a tangent, sorry I didn't know the answer to your question, thread starter!)
i run ja on my laptop, and the specs for this is: -
P4 2ghz
256mb
DVD/CD rom
32 ATI Mobility M6
I can't run it everything on high, but it works great, better than on my desktop anyway. On your specs, when my laptop was new, it set me back Ј1400, i'm guessing yours will be in the region of Ј1800...but yeah it will run it with some tweaking..
