this thread is getting long and raveled so how about this,
no flaming just share with us a favourite band or musician
from the 1980's. for me the 80's was several things;
Oingo Boingo was one of them. so here are some Faq's
concerning this one of my favourite bands.
What is Boingo?
Boingo (also known as Oingo Boingo)
is an eclectic musical group
from Southern California
that could never really be catagorized,
though people have often tried.
They have recorded 11 albums since 1980,
but have been together since the mid-1970's.
The names "Boingo",
"Oingo Boingo",
"Mystic Knights",
and "The Mystic Knights Of The Oingo Boingo"
are all synonymous
(essentially the longer the name,
the older the reference);
On occasion they have also used
the alias "The Clowns of Death"
(usually for private or "secret" shows).
Boingo (in all it's monickers)
ceased to exist after a final run of shows
ending on Halloween 1995.
Who are Oingo Boingo? (final tour)
Oingo Boingo is/was Danny Elfman
(leader, songwriter, lead singer,
rhythm guitar, co-arranger);
Steve Bartek (lead guitar, co-arranger);
John Avila (bass, vocals);
Johnny "Vatos" Hernandez (drums);
Sam "Sluggo" Phipps (horns);
Leon Schneiderman (horns);
Dale Turner (horns);
George McMullen (horns);
Warren Fitzgerald (guitar);
Marc Mann (keyboards);
Doug Lacy (accordian, rhythm);
Katurah Clarke (rhythm).
Former (or session) members include:
Carl Graves; Richard Gibbs;
Kerry Hatch; Mike Bacich;
Bruce Fowler; Rich Sumner;
Willy Winant.
On the average there are 5-8 members of Boingo,
but there have been as many as 20,
playing all sorts of traditional
and not-so-traditional instruments.
What does Oingo Boingo mean?
The name Oingo Boingo
has no specific meaning -
well at least nothing that anyone involved will admit.
Richard Elfman (brother of Danny Elfman)
came up with the name.
Originally known as the Mystic Knights of The Oingo Boingo,
the name was shortened to Oingo Boingo
in 1980 for their first album release.
Shortened again with the release
of their self-titled 1994 album,
they were known by there more aerodynamic
and environmentally friendly moniker - Boingo.
For nostalgia's sake
(and because the horns returned),
they went back to Oingo Boingo
for their final shows.
"Oingo Boingo means 'the best'
and now the best is no more!"
[Johnny "Vatos" Hernandez].
What albums have Oingo Boingo released?
"Oingo Boingo" [EP] (1980);
"Only A Lad" (1981);
"Nothing To Fear" (1982);
"Good For Your Soul" (1983);
"So-Lo" [Danny Elfman] (1984);
"Dead Man's Party" (1985);
"BOI-NGO" (1987);
"Boingo Alive" (1988);
"Skeletons In The Closet" (1989);
"Dark At The End Of The Tunnel" (1990);
"Best O'Boingo" (1991);
"Boingo" (1994);
"Farewell" (1996).
What is Oingo Boingo's best selling album?
The best selling album is "Dead Man's Party"
- released in 1985, it is the bands first
and only album so far to go gold. Both
"Boingo Alive" and "Best O'Boingo"
are threatening to go gold soon.
What is Oingo Boingo's best selling single?
The best selling single is "Weird Science" -
which was on the "Dead Man's Party" album
and is the only Oingo Boingo song
to break the Top 40,
"Dead Man's Party"
is probably the next highest ranked single.
