At the end of TPM, at Qui-Gon's funeral, Mace and Yoda discuss Maul being a Sith.
And Yoda says: Always two there are, no more, no less."
I'm an EU guy myself, and we know the last time they knew the Sith was around was at the time of Darth Bane when the Sith were wiped out in the Valley of the Jedi on Ruusan.
My question: How does Yoda know about the whole pair of Sith is secrecy thing?

Maybe he felt it in the Force. I dunno, just a thoguht.
Obviously the Jedi know alot about the Sith . Theyre archives are vast. Im sure they have plenty of captured Sith holocrons from the wars they had with them. Darth Bane isnt cannon but regardless theres quite a gap between his time and Ep1. We dont know how much was kept secret from the Jedi. GL may or may not fill it in so in which case we just understand that the Jedi know pretty much all about the Sith, and why wouldnt they? Theyre the Jedi. And the Sith are their greatest enemy.
They claim they have been extict for a millenia though. A la the death of Darth Bane's companions.
And in the TPM novel, Bane was mentioned. Is that still not considered "canon".
And I said I am EU. I want the EU answer if there is one.
EU matter jack all to Lucas... Just cause it's in the phantom menace book doesn't mean it's what Lucas wanted... the book was written by Terry Brooks and he prolly wanted to make it connect with all the other EU books/comics what have u as possible. When it comes to what's official and what's "official" u just can't tell...
You are quoting from the film but you want an EU answer? That doesn't make sense!
@ Lexx: I think he likes peanuts...
Anyone prepared to use the Chewbacca defence to answer this question?
I am not sure how the jedi know about the rule of two, other than long ago it came from others about only two mysterious characters, which were found out to be sith....
Hard to see, the EU is. Canon, it is not....

Mmmm...peeeanuts...*drools*
:p
And I don't understand your question Katarn. Are you asking how Yoda knows that there should only be two Sith; a master and an apprentice? If so, then hasn't that rule been enforced since the Jed Order was formed?
*Doesn't know anything about EU, btw*
Yes Darky, that is my question. Now when it comes to the Golden Age of the Republic (millenia before the movie) I know as much about it as Star Trek (that's the basics, nothing else).
Now according to that EU, Jedi and Sith both number in the 1000s. That was at the time of Exar Kun. He and his armies were defeated, but 1000s of years later, a Jedi falls and starts the Sith up again.
They are all killed (except for Darth Bane) in the battle ground first seen in JK: DFII, the Valley of the Jedi.
Bane took on an apprentice and made the 2 rule...
And isn't there an EU explaination. I don't care if you're EU or not...
I am most likely going to get blasted for this,
but here goes anyway. (note)
I have not read any SW book.
I have not pkayed any games or RPG's
I also only go by what I see in the films themselves
or on an odd documentary show.
I like Yoda, I like Mace Windu.
I think the Jedi Knights in principle are a real good idea.
But I feel the Jedi council
just like the Galactic Senate
has sort of well seen the last of it's glory days
and practical usefulness.
I mean they sit serene and complacently in their penthouse
and they dole out their wisdom, but they do not see
emperor palpatinr\darth sidius
they do not see darth maul
they do not believe Qui-Gon when they tell them
they do know that siths travel in pairs
Yoda trained his padawan darth tiranus guy,
who trained Qui-Gon
and as Yoda and mace say
they did not see this clone army
I mean for guardians of the galactic peace
you really are not seeing much or doing much
yes you got out there and kicked some ass in episode 2
but in episode 3, vader is going to hunt you down
and betray all of you.
I am not pro (curent affairs) war with Iraq
but the Jedi council are so much like the UN
it is not funny. sit in chamber discuss
and put off into commity
and many times when you do reach a deccission
your members do not obey tour command.
ie Russia years ago in Afghanistan conflcit
the UN security council and commity said
no do not do this and yet they did anyway
and they were not removed from their position
nor were they affectively disciplined in any way.
same will happen if the US goes to war
they will publically say bad US bad US
but there head quarters are in america
and it is more likely that america would tell them to leave
and hold their elected body elsewhere,
and yet if the USA goes to war
they will no be economically sanctioned,
stripped of their position or prestige etc...
so like the old league of Nations which was disbanded
because it no longer served a purpose
or like today's Nato not working in concert like they
are suppose to,
the UN has now (as so the Jedi council)
it has become nothing more than an impotent body.
anyhow having said this I guess rage and flame away
since I have shown myself to be sucha bad sith vegetable
First, to answer your doubts: Hard to see the Darkside is...
And second, what does that have to do with my question?!
if you read it some more, you notice that the sith where full of anger, and where constantely betraying iechother(sp?), and killing iechother(sp?) so that is why he made that rule, and that is why yoda knows that
Yeah, Darth Bane was the one that decided that there could only be 2 Sith at any given time. More was hard to keep secret, and made if far more likey that they would just annihilate each other. The Jedi found out about this, eventually (so Yoda knew), but they didn't worry about it too much, apparently, and to their dismay.

That made up? And if not, they just take Qui-Gon for granted until he is dead?
Eh, no. Not made up. Clicky (
http://www.starwars.com/eu/news/2000/07/news20000721.html) for some general info.
As far as taking Qui-Gon for granted goes...well, I don't know the official answer to that, but my opinion is that, yes, that's exactly what they did.
I see. Now everything is cleared up!!!
EU all the way! it's like creating a jigsaw puzzle, when a peice doesn't fit, they alter the peices to make it do so. EU must be very popular if they go to the trouble of doing that...
Hehe, jigsaw puzzle is right - and what a wonderful puzzle it is :). To know everything about the StarWars universe, you would about have to be a devoted historian (which I am not, at this time, tho I am working on it, heh).
It is one of my goals in life to eventually have every StarWars novel, so that I will have all (or at least most) of the pieces to said puzzle.
Resource books are nice. Essential Guides, NEW Essential Guides, Encyclopedia, Visual Dictionaries, Amazing Cross Sections... That is how I do my research. Not alot out thee on the Golden Age- the PT though. Thanks again.

you scare me...i begin to believe anakin akywalker is a real teenage boy living somewhere, and that jedi are also real...you sound just like him.
How was Darth Bane defeated? Maybe he clouded the existence of his apprentice (Sidious?) I think I read Sidious killed his Master. But I think the Jedi do know all about the Sith, since they were a big threat to the Republic and the Jedi Order.
i assumed that Darth Bane just died of old age and his spirit lived on. correct me if i'm wrong.
Discussions like this is the reason why I sometimes dislike EU. Many times it is unclear and contradicts the REAL stuff, the movies.
