Hey, I'm on the team to...

I am the guy that, err.... posts here... alot. Yeah, I am the forums poster guy.... :p

It really doesn't concern the mod, does it? Can't we all get it?

Well, I guess not because the site is down and Lundiquists space is low. I have 60 megs of space free with AT&T, want me to put it on my site in the mean time????? If I have enough room for that and my image sig... Speaking of which, how do you like my image sig?

It's Lundquist's intellectual property. If either he (I assume) or MilesTeg want to give it to you, they can. But it will go up permanently on the website in just over a week (I hope).

It would be nice if it was released on the site first, but that's just my opinion. Lundquist can distribute it how he wishes...

Katarn07, your just 20.3 megs short of having enough space to host it, anyway, I was thinking much the same thing as The_One -having it go up with the new site and all, as part of one nice huge package. But those that can't wait can always try and catch me on AIM and ICQ, though I'm not on much at the moment.
btw, I added the url to the website in the id3 tags, hope that's ok?

edit: I hope the wait doesn't make any of you loose interest, if that's the case just get it any way you can...

I have a small correction to one of the tracks:

The trombones playing the main melody near the end of track 19 are playing too soft, at the time I made it, it sounded ok, but now it bothers me - So I've increased the volume on them. So if one of the mods would replace the original one with this one (when the soundtrack is put on the site), I'd really appreciate it.

http://www.angelfire.com/music4/gffrpg/19_-_Mohc_-_The_Final_Battle.mp3)

(this track is practically identical to the piece in the opening credits, but with minor changes, like the string part in the middle, which I really like and is the reason why I chose to include it)

Eiree vocals. That is great. Strings was good (weird transition, but I ain't going to complain about such technicalities...)

That's some great work Lundquist! I'm now fully convinced that the team made the right decision in deciding to use the MIDI tracks in the mod.

The 'final battle' track sounds absolutely superb on my Audigy 2 and 6.1 speakers with CMSS 2 enabled. The only point of criticism I can make is the same one Katarn07 mentioned relating to the transition to the string soli section at ~1min 30s - it's a little jarring. Perhaps if you removed the two trombone notes in the preceeding bar? That aside, this stuff is A+. ;)

Btw, what synth did you use to playback the MIDI - was it a standard GM bank, soundfonts, or something else? I ask because I'm in need of some good brass instrument sounds for my own MIDI work, but everything I've found so far sounds just awful - like the crappy 'quacking duck' style brass you used to get on those dinky Yamaha keyboards they have in schools. The brass in your files are just about the closest I've heard to real instruments, so it would be great if I could find something similar for my own use.

I just would like to add one little thing more, in the original DF music, as far as I know, the vocals in you md3 sounded like a distorted guitar with a touch of alien, warpy sound...when the team decided to go for MIDI I looked forward to this little section but so far I havent heard anything like it...in either yours or Benevolence's..

Richyboy:
6.1 speakers? I'm sitting here with 2 standard stereo speakers, It's nice two know that quality is good enough for such a sound setup as well.
I agree that the two notes make it sound rather unrealistic, but I'm trying not to change any notation on the compositions. But I guess I could try and remove them for the sake of realism.
regarding the synth, I use GigaStudio - A rather demanding sampler. If you want to use the really good(big) samples it's best to have a dedicated machine run the samples and another one run GigaStudio. But the samples are actually quite expensive: look up Dan Dean Brass Ensemble for example, it's abou $700 - it IS possible to get desent sounding brass for less though (about $100 per section, like Trombones) If you look hard enough around the net you might even find pretty good free samples - the percussion I use in these tracks is free.

Salv:
 Distortion guitar in the midis? there were't any in the original midi which I extracted from the game. In the version playing in the original opening credits, that part was played by clarinet and strings... I wonder what synth/soundcard you used?
 Katarn07
02-13-2003, 3:49 PM

Yeah, everything but that transtion was great. But the string selection totally made that up for me...

*** Not to sound impatient, rude, and demanding (well, I am a bit impatient), when is the new site coming? I hope it will get more updates soon after release, but I am really looking forward to the music!!!

Yea sorry my bad, it aint really like that in the midis...that sound comes from playing without a midi synth I suppose, that I had to do before. And mines is a sound Blaster Live :evanpiel: :)
I would also add that there are 4 different "boss" tracks, theres boss14a which is the one you remade, then theres boss5a, boss10a and "TEMP" which is pretty cool too. Would love to see those remade.

How many tracks are there in this soundtrack (sorry if asked earlier)?

They play different music for bosses? (I presume P1 and P2 DTs can be considered bosses upon their debut in the game...)

There's 20 tracks.
The other boss battle themes are there as well. Except 'temp' which is actually taken directly out from the intro to TIE-Fighter.
'Boss5a' I would believe means the boss in level 5, and as I recall that is the 1st phase of the dark trooper. Boss10 is the same theme as boss11, was there a boss on level10 (jabba's ship)? Not counting the Kell dragon, as there are multiple of those. I really can't remember, so I named the track after the quite familiar boss on level 11.

I've been having technical problems, but I think I've found a workaround. So, if there are no hitches, it will be today (Sunday).

However, whether Lundquist's soundtrack will be on there or not I don't know - I asked MilesTeg to upload it over a week ago, and it still hasn't appeared on the FTP.

I really like the new site design. Just takes a few seconds to figure it all out - but doesn't most sites?
maybe there should be a new thread concerning the new design?

oy, the soundtrack is described as 'breathtaking'. That kinda makes me feel obligated to return to it and make it sound better - I probably will do that in the future when I get better samples, or if someone has some changes they'd like done to it.

Do you have a valid e-mail address I can add, so that people can contact you directly about it?

I am kinda hoping people will use the comments on the poll in the website to offer feedback on the site design - most people seem to like it. It's quite overwhelming, but professional was what I was aiming for - and I think that's what I have acheived. I am thinking of breaking up the menu, then it may be a little easier to navigate. Anyway, I'll see what feedback I get before I start editing things.

Hey, I posted a thread in the swamp about your music.

It's attracting more LF members to it. I finished it a little while ago and love it. Thank you so much. It has a nice mix of instruments, giving the mood that the level does.

Like 'Crix Madine's Fate' sounds like a stealth mission James Bond movies would have. The boss music between the DT and that guy from level 11 (is it really a spoiler?) give the listener a sense they're there in the battle. I could go on about this, but I'll shut up now.

Oh, and I was surprised to hear the Imperial March. I don't remember that (it is in one of my least favorite levels, the Executor...)

Katarn07: Thanks for all the positive feedback you throw my way, I appreciate it :)
Nah, you're probably right, the boss on level 11 isn't a spoiler - I don't know why I got the idea of not mentioning his name - he looks pretty cool in the screenshots!

Sadly, I was talking to Darth NeoVenom, gave him the link, and he says: "OMG, #### #### is in it?! Wow. That kinda ruined it for me..."

Well, yeah, I'm sorry he saw him there, but the original player's knew he'd debut. He was on the box, in the manual, on the back of the CD case...

But the way he enters the game...

Crap, I'm getting off topic.

Listening to your music with the volume up higher (no one watching TV, so it ain't buggin no one...) and it sounds really great. There is something about this soundtrack. Hope you even do TIE Fighter's later on (never played the game myself... Really should)

I just found this thread and after reading all the good reviews about Lundquist music I wanted to download it; but it seems I cannot manage to find it. Is it still online? Could you please tell me the trick? ;)

Oh and btw, X-Wing and TIE-Fighter would also be great, I still have the floppies and even the manual but my PC doesn't like them..:( Getting the soundtrack would be great!

PS: Which tool did you use to convert the midis to MP3?

I've just listened to some of the music in this topic, and what I've heard sounds very good. I'll have to try the whole thing sometime.
Tie Fighter's music was great. I particularly liked the tune at the start of the game, when the Executor flies past Coruscant.

RazorBlade: On the main Dark Forces mod site (you can get there by clicking on the banner on the top), it's in the music section under downloads.
To answer your other question: I used GigaStudio to make it.

oh, and I am going to do TIE Fighter as well - might take longer than this DF soundtrack though, I seem to be drowning in projects all of a sudden.

btw, I appreciate all the positive feedback, but if anyone has any suggestion how to improve it, like idea's for better suited instruments for some parts or whatever, I'm open to those, some of you might have thought of something I haven't.

The soundtrack is really, really great! I can't find a render that works as well as Gigastudio. I'd use it, but being only 18 and getting ready for college, I don't think I'm going to be able to get a hold of the program, esp. for the price.

Back on subject, I really enjoyed the soundtrack. I've even burned it onto a CD. My only gripe is I as why the music to Gromas mines is missing? Also, why you cut off the Arc Hammer music. I really do like that track alot. Just a minor grip, to how great the music sounds.

I would really love to hear x-wing and tie-fighter soundtrack. That was the classic music.

WhiteLightsaber:
The reason why I cut off the music to the Arc Hammer where I did is because after that initial cue it returns to the music from the first cutscene (which I called 'Katarn's Mission'), and then into the gromas mines cue, which reminds me - CRAP! you're right I actually missed something, the first part of the gromas mines music is identical to parts in 'After The Massacre', but the last half isn't! I guess I didn't hear it all the way through.
- Expect an upgrade to the soundtrack shortly!

Coolio!
Just little something I wanted to mention, maybe you could add little electronic sounds here and there...sort of dark-cybernetic-computarized-twisted technology-Doomish sounds and beeps and the like? :) where appropiate depending on the situation..like for example, levels like"Imperial Weapons Facility", The Ark Hammer, Coruscant would benefit from this. Maybe that could be done for v1.1? if theres ever one? that is if you can do it, maybe not. I mention this coz Dark Forces is all really about this dark cybernetic-army you going againt...so these little additions would suit the concept of the game well...that is all :) good luck with your mission!

What's so cool about this soundtrack is it sounds like real instruments. I would prefer no beeps...

But an addition for Gromas would be nicely done! I love 'Dark Trooper Release' with the booming before they are launched! So cool...

Ok an excelent example of the type of sound Im talking about is when Boba Fett shows up in the ANH and ESB, the first time its when Jabba is next to the Falcon calling Han down and at the end Boba appears and seems to look at you for a sec...theres the the little "circuitry, distorted sound" and the second is when he tails the falcon and you get a glince at him for about 2 secs inside the cockpit pushing some lever up, again, theres the "circuitry/cybernetic distorted sound" Im talking about...as you can see its only used very, very, rarely in the movies...thats the way I was meaning it to be used. Same care should be taken with the tracks...

A cool tidbit: Secret Base includes music from the opening scene of ANH. The Arc Hammer includes music from the Battle of Yavin. (Well, I think it's cool, anyway. :) )
