Hey guys,
I just started mapping, and im using jk2radiant (and the help of the RichDiesal tutorials; big help). I have a few questions and was hoping i could get other people's input.

1. What does WIP mean?!! I figured it was something In Production
2. If you have any suggestions/comments on my map
3. What you think of my first map
4. If you think I should keep working on this map or scrap it and start on something new

This map is a duel or FFA type map, and will probably be made to accompany about 10+ players (in FFA mode of course). Most of the textures I am using come from Yavin, which brings me to my next point, I planned on calling the map "Duel_Yavin" but I could change it in the future. The amount of time i've spent working on it is probably about...8+ hours

Wow that's a lot of screenshots, but I felt the need to show the whole map as to get good suggestions/comments.

Thanks for all your suggestions or comments you may place here, they're all greatly appreciated.

BTW - only constructive critism please, this is my first map, not my 20th

1. WIP means "Work In Progress" (though Production would work, too)

I can't answer 2-4 because the link doesn't work for me. I get the message "HTTP1.1 STATUS 403 Remote Access to this object forbidden. This file cannot be directly accessed from a remote site, but must be linked through the Brinkster Member's site" whenever I click on one of the links.

well, all things considered that is very good mate. ..first map?
hmmm...most peeps first maps are a damn side worse than that...are you sure?

Mind you you actually bothered to read some tuts...and some damn good ones at that...

Some interesting use of color, I'll say that. Purples and reds in the dueling area... interesting. Not sure it's what *I* wopuld have done, but that's what amking a map is all about - doing it YOUR way.

I do have one or two comments though.

First, the "dueling arena" itself. It looks fairly small. Oh, the columns and the height of the area look good, but the actual XY dimensions don't look to large. This may not be a problem though, as I also notice you've put in no way to keep the combatants in the arena anyways. :)

The hallway. Again, it's not bad, but it's not all that good either. Essentially what you've built it a big cement tunnel from the looks of it. NOt bad, in and of itself, but if, as your screenshots indicate, there is a "Imperial Recruitment Center" branching off of it, wouldn't it make sence that they would have made that hallway a little more ornate?

Good job so far on a first map. By all means, continue to develop this one... always try to see a project through to the end, even if you dont like it after a point. If nothing else, you'll learn more little "tricks of the trade" for your next one. Don't deny yourself experiance.

Well, as far as the purple lighting goes...i didnt put that in there...its just...there, probably has something to do with the blue lights on top of the building in the dueling area. What do you mean i've made no way to keep the duelers in there?! The door is switch activated but i have no idea how to make them stay in there, i guess by only putting the switch on the hallway side?!

Let me rephrase.

THe dueling area itself (the area covered by the columned cieling) has no edge or wall or anything to indicate that it's a seperate area, hence, nothing to keep the combatants in that area only. It's more likely to be a "free-range" duel, going across the whole room.

oh, no the dueling area with the columned cieling, that area with the columns, isnt accually the ceiling, its just like a temple type thing, just for looks mostly, not a seperate room, that whole area (with the leaves on rocks textures on wall) is the dueling area...

Not much, i'm still working on it, i've added some columns at the top of the building in center of dueling area, kind of like the Parthenon (Building in Greece or Rome, one of the two). In the hallways i plan on putting some windows facing OUTSIDE and view some kind of ships on a landing platform of some sort, but that area will not be acceceble. I may change the textures of the walls of the hallways and make it into an arched hallway (if i cna figure it out, im sure i cna w/ the help of RichDiesal :)). Also i'll probably add some flames to the top of the building in the center of dueling area, and possibly around the sides of the walls.

I also have a question.
Why when I try to put my flame on it doenst work, I do the following:
1. Create fx_runner
2. Place fx_runner where I want it
3. Create info_null and point the fx_runner towards it
4. I add the key "fxFile" and value "env\wall_fire.efx" (I have also tried "effects\env\wall_fire.efx")


Then I compile and no flame, what gives?!

Being your first map and from what I can tell so far you have some exceptional skills. If you continue mapping you'll definetly move quickly to making some great maps. Any more updates? Do you have plans for other future maps?

As for an update...Someday I might turn it into an FFA (Possibly next if I am unable to come up with other ideas...), I will need suggestions though, as I am not sure what to add...
