Hey, folks, I'm looking for a good movie to watch.

Basically, I'm a big fan of film when it's done well. I like movies. I have recently come into possession of the films Brazil and Memento on DVD and Pi on VHS (sorry I had to write out the word "pi" rather than use the neato symbol, but for some reason this particular forum won't let me put it in... whatever). This supplements my copy of the Fight Club DVD quite tastily in my "favorite movies" list, and as soon as I get a copy of City of Lost Children I'll have all 5 of my favorite movies.

But 5 faves isn't enough. I need to expact my list. So the first flick to get added is, of course, American Beauty. From here, I'm open. Perhaps 12 Monkeys and SE7EN will be added.

Here's the deal: please recommend some truly excellent movies that I should see. I know already that I need to see Snatch (can't believe I passed up an opportunity to rent it to watch Swordfish instead... what a piece of crap that movie was). And I know I need to see Resevoir Dogs and The Usual Suspects (why haven't I yet? who knows?), and I should probably see Pulp Fiction (though I'll end my Tarentino watching there). I need to see the rest of Terry Gilliam's movies (Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, The Fisher King, Time Bandits...) and I should probably just round up all of Kevin Spacey's movies. Maybe I'll see some more Luc Besson flicks...

Anyway.

Please make me some recommendations so that I may fortify myself with excellent movie watchage.

And please don't fill this thread with spam and Matrix tripe.

"Swingers" and "Made" are comedic, trendsetting classics.

"Pi" is a good, intelligent move.

Thats a good movie, but being somewhat of an amateur ripperologist, the plot was ... wrong. Great story though, don't get me wrong. It all fits together really well, and is great. Even though its pretty obvious who the ripper is. And theres some really gruesome scenes in it. Of course, not as bad as the real pictures, which I have seen. YIKES

Y'know, Alien, I was frustratedly reading through this thread and all of a sudden I'm bombarded with a string of Angel spoilers. Keep in mind that the Buffy spoiler you threw out was a big one (fortunately I'm up to speed on my Buffy), but I've seen only one full episode of Angel, but now I know a lot of what I didn't already.

Let's see:

metallus, I have seen Run Lola Run and enjoyed it. Didn't snag the favorites list, but definitely a good watch if for nothing other than cool concepts and directing and usage of the word "scheize" (hope I spelled that right for you Deutches ).

I've also seen Legend Of Drunken Master (unless you're referring to the actual Drunken Master 1 which was never released in America), and though entertaining, it's nowhere near the calibur of, say, a real ****ing movie!

And of course I know Pi is brilliant.

Could we maybe be a little more intelligent than Robocop and The Terminator? The little piece I've seen of Robocop was pretty damn lame, and though The Terminator is pretty good (one-upped by it's successor, I must say), it's not in the league of Pi or Brazil. Come on people, try harder. Imean... Die Hard? What do you take me for?

Jurassic Park was pretty good for a popcorn flick (great entertainment that won't fill you up and has absolutely no substance... like 90% of Spielberg's films), but both sequels were abyssmal. JPIII has no right to exist, it's not even a movie. It's just a bunch of stuff that looks like they were too smart to put in The Lost World. Plot: lame excuse to get on the island, buncha dinosaur stuff, deus ex machina ending, roll credits. Boo-yah.

Lord of the Rings kicked the ****, man, that's one awesome movie. Kudos. Oh, but the word is anime, please don't say "japanimaiton." It's bastardization of language. I will look into this Canadian flick, though.

I do plan on seeing Traffic sooner or later, as well as American Psycho, but I haven't yet. And I did hear that From Hell was great. They shall make my list.

Maybe I oughtta give up on intelligent movies and just watch The Faculty again. Man, that movie sucked ass.

Is that the one where the teachers are aliens? If so, then look at it this way: At least you didn't get the Hebrew translation of the name, which was, brace yourself, 'Nightmare in the Teacher's Lounge'.

Just because movies like Die Hard and Robocop are popular, it doesn't necessarily mean that they're crap. You've adopted an atitude where if the masses like it, then it can't be good, because you are so much better than them all, so if you liked it you'd be lowering yourself. Or maybe I took that Die Hard thing a bit too seriously. I mean, my two favourite movies are FotR, and Clockwork Orange.

Way to go LucasTones. Keep open to all sorts of entertainment, mainstream and wotsitsname - that other stream.

GC, you seem to object to First Blood, which is the first part of the Rambo trilogy, because all you know is that it's considered to be just a brutal and dumb flick. All you seem to know about it is the phrase of 'a Rambo ####' which stands for all sorts of mindless and brutal stuff. That's not the case. First Blood has violence in it, no doubt, but it has some things to say as well. Go see it and you may find that it's not so bad.

The same is true for RoboCop. This is one of my all time favorites. And just like some other movies it has become a kiddy deal. How bad can a serious movie be made when some greedy executives make it into a TV series and cartoon show with loads of toys. (Don't even remind me of that pathetic 3rd part.) Trust me on this one, too, it's not as hollow as it may seem.

Well, for the Buffy and Angel spoilers. Gee, I'm sorry. I did expect everyone to have seen them. Usually I'm last in line to see these series.

Victorean England's perfect for storys... take all the murders that happened at that time, for instance. Like Jack The Ripper.

I watched a programme about some fella who killed loads of prostitutes and, like, was really evil, y'know? The police didn't know who it was at the time, and there was a lot of fear on the streets of London at that time anyway, because of Jack The Ripper. The murderer also confused matters by sending people black mail letters.

Eventually the police arrested the murderer, and, er, murdered him using the old hanging method. However, just as the trapdoor was opened, leaving him suspened in mid air with a rope tied around his neck, he cried out "I'M JACK!". They never found out if he was actually Jack The Ripper, or whether this was just a "joke". Pretty dramatic, though? Great for stories.

As I may already have mentioned, heh, I'm something of an expert on this topic. Lots of people claimed to be Jack the Ripper, and all of them, including the one you said, were proven to be false claims. My favourite was this old geezer who was arrested for mail fraud and said 'you've caught jack the ripper at last.' Personally, I think the whole Jack the Ripper case has been blown way out of proportion. As a result, all kinds of romantic theories about who it was have come up. It was most likely an insane person, who was commited by people who knew him, and thus could not go around killing people anymore.

Really? Amazin'!

What about Springheel Jack? Where does he fit into it?

People, you're taking me entirely too seriously.

I'm not saying Die Hard is a bad flick (though, as I said, I finally left the room after 40 minutes of RoboCop). But I'm not looking for some good thrills and laughs. I'm trying to find an intelligent and thought-provoking film here. I need a good mindbender. Die Hard may be good on the suspense and blow-uppiness, and it even does it well, but God, it's nowhere near the level of movies like City of Lost Children or Memento. Come on, folks, pick my brain.

The attitude that mainstream media is ipso facto crap pisses me off just as much as it does you, don't worry. I love many mainstream films. Hell on the way back from Florida I watch goddamn Serendipity on HBO in a hotel. I just know that it's hard to find a big-budget mass produced film that hasn't been butchered and watered down to appeal to the lowest common denominator by the studios. And in the rare even one is actually a great movie, it generally grosses in the black (i.e. Fight Club).

Come on, isn't there just a nice indie film I haven't seent hat someone can recommend? If you can find me a brilliant blockbuster I'll watch it and love it, but they are in short demand.

However, that doesn't mean to say that everyone who was put to the gallows died instantly. If your neck didn't break, and it was possible, then they were strangled to death.
Spring-Heeled Jack was about 60 years earlier than Jack the Ripper, but it is true he was sighted up untill the early 1900's. He never actually killed anyone as far as I know, he just scared everyone. I once read that someone thought he was like ET - an alien, lost from home. That was why he could jump, because Earths gravity was less than that on his home planet. Preposterous...

Capricorn One - faked Mars mission, astronauts forced into pretending they went to Mars. When the space craft burns up the atmosphere, the astronaughts realise that NASA can't let them go back into public life... so they try to escape.

Man on the Moon - a great Jim Carrey role, about the life and times of comedian Andy Kaufmann.

Jude - Thomas Hardys novel turned Kate Winslett vehicle. Two cousins fall in love with disasterous consequences.

Bonnie and Clyde - a fantastic re-telling of the two most famous bank robbers of all time.
