Looking forward to this :)

Do you count the closeups as part of backgrounds?

I'll do the closeups, but will keep the backgrounds the same.

I assume the 25% of finished Guybrush are his walkcycle... could you post an animated GIF of that one?

BTW: GREAT work... I'll be thrilled if you get this done.

And I wish I could be of help here, as this is a project I REALLY would like to see finished. I was thinking about trying to "Cursify" (or "Tillerfy") the backgrounds, but just like with the sprites, I think that's beyond my capabilities.

Spadge, it looks like the version you've done is CMI Guybrush with SE art.

Melee Lookout is at 10% now!

Having worked on a few game mods over the years, might I suggest you start and finish one character completely, release it as a wip patch and then move on to the next character. Releasing as you go keeps interest up, and even if you get bogged down, you don't end up with 20 unfinished characters.

Ambitious project (and CMI style backgrounds would just be lovely, even if not in your scope).

I'm just hoping for a simple hair mod for Guybrush (and possibly Elaine). Irishsmile?

I'm working in sections. The first being Guybrush and Melee lookout. It will be released that way. So when a section is released, you won't have a completed Guybrush talking to an incomplete character.

Challenges include:

- Head alignment - getting the new heads to align with the body during talking animations. It is pixel sensitive. 1 pixel off and it messes up the entire animation.
- Character design - figuring out what these semi-realistic characters look like in CMI cartoon style.
- Fitting the newly designed characters within the old design's boundaries.
- Graphics that are split up into sections, such as close ups.

Those are the biggies, there will probably be more as I progress.

Sounds like a reasonable approach. Have you considered drawing at a higher resolution, while keeping some body parts separate? That way you could possibly simplify some animations (like talking, because you can move elements separately on a sub-pixel level).

I wonder if there are any plugins that may be able to roughlt CMIise / cartoonise the SOME:SE background art (basically something akin to a cell-shader for 3D objects), then a few sky / cloud replacements would be in order, so the characters don't look like they're from another world.

Obviously redrawn backgrounds would be the way to go, but I doubt anyone with enough skill has enough time to volunteer to such a project.

That looks really nice, but the backgrounds definitely have to be Cursed too in order for it to work. :)

Since you're going to release it in steps, maybe I can keep up with you in providing backgrounds as you work on the characters? I'm going to work on the lookout screen right now. :)

By the way, Bill Tiller (background artist for CMI) made an image of the Scumm Bar from MI1 and put his CMI Guybrush in there:

Source: New MI1 special edition (http://billisboard.blogspot.com/2009/06/blog-post.html)

Maybe Jenni can use this as additional reference to adapting the MI1 backgrounds to CMI's style.

Or you could use his original from theScummBar website:

I'm not sure that's likely... The Scumm Bar background is part of the dock background, isn't it? Unless you make a separate room for just this screen with new walk paths, an image for the open door, etc. And you would need Bill Tiller's permission anyway (No use or reproduction without written permission).

That's funny, since I traced Lechuck's face exactly from the CMI sprite. I don't know about the wrinkles since he isn't a zombie.

Let me see if I can fix some things.

Edit:
Here we go.

Looks awesome! I hope you manage to finish this project. I'm just not sure if I like those...rubber band thingys in his beard, though... Why did you add them? Just curious :) Is it your original vision of the Ghost Pirate LeChuck? Other motivations? I think the ghost beard would have a problem reprising its role as alive and wriggling in MI2 if it's tied up like that :p

LucasArts thinks so...

besides, Lechuck has a huge beard, it would cover up his ghost rib cage if left alone.

Hm, k, I didn't notice how it was tied up in the in-game sprites of the SE. Haven't completed it, so had to search up a youtube video of the end to see the closeup. And yup, it's tied up even there.

It looks like it's tied up in the original as well, I just never noticed it:
http://members.shaw.ca/victorwhho/Monkey%201.JPG)

Then the close up in the original game is actually wrong. Oh well. Keep up the good work, I won't disturb you anymore (for now ;))

Edit: It may be that it's like dreads or something in the original, though, as it looks pretty unkempt. Anyway, it's weird that Symbiote Studios' statue based on the SE has LeChuck with a normal beard. But that's their choice I guess. After all it fits better with almost all of LeChuck's designs.

Edit2: Just watched a gameplay clip from the orginal SMI. It doesn't look like it has any rips in it after all, it just did in the screenshot I found :p If you want to base your sprites on the SMI:SE-sprites, that's your choice. I would've preferred it to be based on the original sprites, but do as you like :)
