Yeah I always assumed it was a joke like a strap on cheap kiddy hat you would buy at an amusement park I.E. in a shop outside of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney.
Hi there, I'm a bit sad about how the LeChuck become in the SE,
So I did some changes to make he look more like the original one...
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/2609/lechuckcores2.jpg)
1. Special Edition
2. CD/VGA
3. My version! With new colors, the mustache, the fake nose with the eyebrows, and with a little fix in his arm.
4. EGA
5. Original Concept Art
I would like to know what you think about it.
Hope you enjoy anyway.
I like your version better... Only think I would have done different is maybe make the coat a lighter blue and added a glow to the entire thing
Apart from the nose and that cheap arm fix. It's much better, he looks more like a ghost like that, and is also a lot scarier looking.
I never liked that pink nose of his though.
Edit: It actually makes more sense for him to have a blue coat, his real (red) coat was on his corpse at the time.
hmm nice try, but I think you made him look too young. the walk pose looks too much like a young gangster. Also your beard is trimmed which I don't like. I think the beard should have a life of its own. A little like Davy Jones tentacles. The SE version enhanced the beard a little over the VGA one which I like (the EGA beard was closer to the original concept art than the VGA beard).
Irishmile, that's amazing! Nice work.
His face doesn't look as angry as it should though :P
I cant really take credit for it all I did was recolor one of the hi-rez press release pictures
I really did like the idea of the dead bird in LeChuck's hat. It's a shame they didn't incorporate it into any of the actual games. Seems like it was just a Steve Purcell thing (correct me if I'm wrong)
Now that I see the Tales LeChuck next to the "grown ups" he looks a bit like LeChuckie the tiny cursing LeChuck doll. That ridiculously inflated pirate symbol on his hat might have something to do with it, as does the tamed beard. And fixated on beards as I seem to be :) Telltale really should've spent some time doing some kind of procedurally animated tentacle-like beard instead of that green goo. Looks like he threw up ;)
btw Steve Purcell posted some work he did for CMI ! A version of his LeChuck too!

@LeChuck Norris
I totally prefer your LeChuck!!!
@Scapetti
I can't believe I've never noticed that bird in his hat before! It's even on the cover of MI2. How cool!
I was browsing through spudvision, came across this.
I think this is what Guybrush should have looked like in the SE

Yeah they could have at least asked Steve to do some concept sketches for them.
Various Lechucks for compare:

I like Steve Purcell's LeChuck... that just looks exactly how he should look. Well, atleast when he's undead LeChuck.

This is great, but isn't he a little too cool? Guybrush is supposed to be a dork. That's why I love the SE version of him.
man oh man I would pledge to feed bananas to a three-headed-monkey for life, just to see a Steve Purcell-stylized Monkey Island 3 or 5. His artworks, no matter if they are more natural looking like on the MI and MI2 cover or the more exaggerated ones always have so much attention to detail that you could just dive into the world.
This is great, but isn't he a little too cool? Guybrush is supposed to be a dork. That's why I love the SE version of him.
Yeah I guess he does look too cool on that pic, but his hair is a lot better.

Yeah, I just noticed that too, it's brilliant :D

I actually always imagined Guyrbush as a cool kind of dork... a witty dork (kind of like Spiderman, although I really hate to make that comparison :P)

I hear you on that, and I agree more so in 2. But with so many references to how dorky h looks in one, the SE sprite really seems to fit to me.

At the point in time when that concept art was being done it was for the movie, which may or may not have been an accurate interpretation of the characters from the game. Guybrush is much less naive than the first game even in Monkey Island 2. His character development beyond that was pretty much halted with CMI. It appears TOMI will continue where MI2 left off. in terms of that
FOR THE MOVIE? Wait a second... for the M-O-V-I-E??? There was pre-production going on for an actual Monkey-movie? Can you elaborate on that? Animated in 2D? When? By whom?
I think it was proposed at LucasArts/LucasFilm around the time of CMI. There's some concept art for it on Steve Purcell's blog here (
http://spudvisionblog.blogspot.com/search?q=pirate) - I can't remember exactly why it never got made though, but it never got past the pre-production stage.
Where you got that art and the two posts following are all movie concept, not game concept. It was all done after CMI, which also explains why it is much more elaborate than anything in the first two games, Purcell's further artistic advancement notwithstanding. It also appears from all of the concept, at least from my guess, that the characters were going to be somewhat different and all generally more rough looking, suggesting (in my opinion, again) that the movie would be a sort of alternate uncanon universe from the game, as movies usually are.

General nondisclosure agreement sort of says he shouldn't be posting any of these at all, but art was first liberally posted, although not explicitly, a while back here:

If you look through Tony Stacchi's art gallery above, you may find some things that are familiar to you.
Anyways, beautiful technique:

My envy is now in overdrive.
And this all has nothing to do with the Special Edition, I'm done clogging the thread.
Gorgeous! Just gorgeous. Too bad they never got it off the ground. If this had been made in 1997-1998, the POTC movies would be seen as mere rip-offs!

Secondly, As we assumed, the artwork from Steve Purcell was for the canceled Monkey Island movie that ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) was working on in 2000. The really interesting thing is that the movie was going to be produced by Steven Spielberg (who is a big Monkey Island fan himself). He asked Ted Elliott, a script writer who has worked on several Disney movies (including 'Treasure Planet') and on 'Steven Spielberg’s Director's Chair' game, to help with the story for the MI movie.
The Monkey Island movie never got the green light and years later Ted Elliott wrote 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl', which took several ideas from Monkey Island. So basically the first two PotC movies are the Monkey Island movie.
AWESOME, Almost everything I see from concept art Guybrush seems to have a Monkey Sidekick..

And LeChuck's crew looks more dynamic with individual personalities (LOL @ the pirate in the pink dress)

MY MIND -> OFFICIALLY BLOWN.
So basically, if more people had bought CMI, the suits might've greenlighted a MONKEY ISLAND movie based on the most awesome and inspiring piratey concept art ever.
Yeah It could have really been something special... But it could have also been the end of MI as we know it. If it had done well they may have spilled into other realms like action games or something horrible like that.. and forgotten all about making any new adventure games.. So who knows maybe it really was all for the best.. We will never know.
Well said, I think I'd rather have people give me funny looks when I say "Monkey Island" than have them know what I'm talking about and have a bunch of crap games/toys on the market with the Monkey Island name on them.

Maybe, but I don't think it would have ever made it as an animated movie either way. The United States is an entertainment cesspit when it comes to animated film.
Bluergh. That Staachi stuff was horrible. I also didn't like Purcell's "dapper" LeChuck.
Bluergh. That Staachi stuff was horrible.
That's a little harsh. His stuff is all very skillfully drawn even if Guybrush looks like he came out of a Harvey comic for whatever reason.
Just the idea of a monkey sidekick...why wasn't this done in the games? There could be so much humor potential there. Sometimes the monkey could be a better thinker than Guybrush. Just think of K9 or something like that. And there could be a little sideplot with the monkey having the three-headed monkey as an antagonist.
Because Guybrush is our monkey sidekick :)
I think Guybrush having a sidekick would detract from the Guybrush/player relationship.
I'm thinking Monkey = Sophia Hapgood. A team mode for Monkey Island where you would have passages working together escaping from LeChuck's fortress or something like that.
Imagine the monkey violently shaking it's head as Guybrush keeps coming up with the most idiotic solutions as to what the monkey meant.
I made this Guybrush progression pic in CMI style, enjoy!

It's one of those ideas that died out after the 90s ended.

Ha! I love this! It's perfect! Now draw his body for the first game! :thmbup1:

I thought it was a studio for the film or something? It's definitely skillfully drawn, it's just not my Monkey Island :)

That is the problem now isn't it? there have been so many different art styles in MI that everyone now has their specific idea of what it should look like.... Its like there is no real correct answer.

Except the correct answer is Steve Purcell's drawings ;)
You'll get no arguments from me on that.... but there is much love all around for the Bill Tiller style stuff.... and I can respect that because the 3rd game was a very nice looking game... even though that Guybrush is not my first choice.... Even Ron Gilbert said that the third game was very well done.. Despite it not going exactly how he had imagined it.
