1st Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler History

The 1st Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler was formed on March 17 1933 by Josef “Sepp” Dietrich, Hitler’s personal bodyguard. Hitler wants a full-time armed force completely loyal to him. Dietrich handpicked 120 men and were barracked at the Alexander Barracks in Berlin and later at Berlin-Litcherfelde
Redesignated SS-Sonderkommando Zossen and the new unit, SS-Sonderkommando Jüterbog were raised. These units merged in September 1933 and designated SS-Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler. The members had to take an oath of loyalty to Hitler on November 9th 1933. It took part in the Night Of The Long Knives

This thread confused the hell out of me. I've got more background with the SS than I ever would've wanted but I figured, well the poster appears to be banned and hasn't been here since Feb2008 so what the hell, let it die.
Liebstandarte arguably began in May 1923 with the formation of Stosstruppe Adolf Hitler, the first unit under the command of the Stabswache formed two months earlier. Its first commander was Josef Berchtold. After Hitler's time in prison and the ban on the NSDAP was lifted it was reformed in April 1925 under Julius Schreck, Hitler's chauffeur who renamed it Schutzstaffel or SS, though the unit was still referred to Stosstruppe Adolf Hitler. In March 1933 with Hitler and the Nazis in power SS Stabswache Berlin was formed, with 120 hand picked men under Dietrich, many former members of Stosstruppe Adolf Hitler. In May it was reformed with three training companies as SS Sonderkommando Zossen, given additional policing powers. During the following months another three companies were added and it was renamed SS Sonderkommando Jüterbog. Armed roughly as light infantry it became 1st SS Liebstandarte Adolf Hitler on November 9th 1933.

The Allegemeine SS was also not nearly so organised, neither was its command structure which functioned at Hitler's whim, as he wished it, so as to maintain an absolute dictatorship upon the functions of State. Quite often departments in fact interpreted Hitler's instructions differently, which brought no end of dispute. It was a cannibalistic, jealous and violent organisation in every sense, between every leading member and spent more time arguing with itself than creating logical political and military doctrines.

The chain of command of the SS was strictly, Führer (presently Hitler), the Reichführer-SS (presently Himmler) and then Reichmarschall Hermann Göring (whom formed the Gestapo as a Prussian secret police about the same time the SS was evolving with Liebstandarte, the Reichmarschall would normally have no direct authority over the SS but the situation with Göring was different).
Then came everybody else and anybody's guess is as good as another. Obergruppenführer Heydrich is popular for 2IC to the Reichführer-SS due to his cabinet appointments such as Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, Deputy of the Reich and of course his sheer personal brutality. But truth be told his importance is questionable.
Rudolf Hess was at one time Hitler's deputy and thus regarded by many as Deputy Führer by entitlement, but he has no authority over the SS and had long since been outshone by individuals such as Himmler and Heydrich by the time the SS had fully evolved.
Believe it or not probably next in line following Heydrich was Obersturmbannführer Adolf Eichmann. Head of the Jewish Evacuation Department, young, smart, good-looking and extremely good at his job. He was probably the most Aryan looking Nazi in the entire SS and was bound to go far had Germany won the war.

One of the things to keep in mind about the SS was that as a Party organisation its leadership was by strength of personality as much as any technical authority. As mentioned, there was not one single SS member who would not follow Göring's order strictly and to the letter, and any member of the Gestapo would consider him more their leader than Himmler. But he had no SS rank at all. In fact if it came down to it, one might be surprised what could happen had an order of the Reichmarschall contravened an order of the Reichführer-SS. After all, in the field even the Führer himself was disobeyed in order to serve his better interests.
