It was proberly done with replacing, rather than hex editing ;)

You shouldn't need to port those files anyway. Just pull the .mdl and .mdx for the longsaber from TSL, make a bunch of copies of both, rename as needed, and hex edit the .mdl files to point at the proper textures.

You will need an aplication used for hex editing, I presonally use Hex Workshop, but that costs $$$ (or in my case ЈЈЈ :p ), but there is a free application that does basically the same thing: Hex-editor XVI32 (http://www.chmaas.handshake.de/delphi/freeware/xvi32/xvi32.htm#download)

There are some tutorials (or at least one) that explains how to do basic hex editing.
