Indeed. What we know as Communism: Stalin Russian, Castro's Cuba, SonOfABitchMustDie!...I mean, Kim Jong Il's (utterly poor and f*cked up) N. Korea, and China used a lot of Socialism.

Bad examples. None of those countries ever used real socialism IMO - Stalin's Russia was riddled with corruption, and tried to give equal pay for all jobs while at the same time conducting mass genocide. Cuba was a poor nation which hasn't implemented the principles I've suggested either. N. Korea is a hellhole regardless of the form of economics used that. That Communism gives the gov't more control is simply a means by which Kim can oppress his people further. China I would hesitate to label as Communist - other than how they have pictures of Marx at the political rallies, they're an industrializing capitalist nation Communist only in name in all respects.

All and all those aren't/weren't *real* Communist countries. Not the type I'm proposing at least. That's not even mentioning how many of them were plagued by problems that would turn any capitalist nation into a hellhole, but which people are quick to dismiss as flaws of Communism. How well off would the U.S. be if its people were starving, reverting to cannibalism and the gov't conducted mass purges? Economics won't make too much of a difference when politics gets out of hand like that.

Admitedly, China is starting to do pretty good. You can go there without getting maliciously charged with a crime and killed (though I wouldn't shout anti-gov slogans) and their economy is booming.

I'd hesitate to call them a shining example of prosperity. They may be industrializing, but it's not a very nice place. The air is literally yellow is some cities. Their safety regulations and accident rates with workers are some of the worst in the world. They suffer from serious pollution, and a fair number of their people still live in grass huts. Their government is far from humane.

*Applauds* Although you posted something with so much sense in the RD, OTP, That was brilliant.

I'm just typing out my opinions. You should see an actual paper of mine. :D

Good news Devon. I finished 1984 in study hall today. That ending was like WOAH!

I'll take recommendations.

I'd post it if I had it, but it was on a different computer. Ah well.

@Ave, what about Atlas Shrugged if you're up for a long one? It's similar in 1984 in how it's all about some kind of political/economic theory, but it's a total opposite of the one there.

But don't listen to a word the author says. As interesting as they may be, the philosophies she presents could never work.

Samnmax will probably also recommend it.

Read the bible????????????????????????????????????????????? ??

What are you, joking? That book's thousands of years old and advocates absolutely barbaric practices.

Deuteronomy 21:10

"When you go to war against your enemies... and you take prisoners... put the entire male population to death."

Deuteronomy 22:28

"If a man happens to meet a virgin woman who is not engaged to be married... And he seizes her and rapes her... but is caught in the act... the rapist must pay the girl's father fifty silver shekels. She must marry the rapist, because he has violated her. And so long as he lives, he may not divorce her."

My point being the Bible is full of barbaric laws and unproven fables. I can think of a lot of other things I'd rather read.

I picked up Brave New World from the library yesterday.

That's a good one too. The government in that story is even more oppressive than the one in 1984, amazingly.

While you're on the trend of reading totalitarian stories, I'd also pick up Fahrenheit 451. That's an entertaining read too.

"Guns, Germs, and Steel" by Jared Diamond
"The Art of War" by Sun Tzu
"Brainwash: The Secret History of Mind Control" by Dominic Streatfeild
"A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking

Let's not get started on the Koran, then; seems like telling people to go out and slaughter others is a right of passage.

Heard of Red Scarf Girl? It's a book we had to read in school. A chick gets wrapped up in Chairman Mao's Communist uprising. Reveals all the naughty sides to Communism. If you're into oppressive government crap, by all means. I personally didn't like it at all though, but maybe that's just because we were forced to read it in school.

I'd still be an atheist if the Bible didn't contain lines like that. Uncivilized as they are, they're unrelated to whether or not God exists.
