I have area protals in the doors for my map, but they do absolutely nothing. The are exactly as tall and wide as my doors, and one unit less thick from both sides (as rich diesals tutorials say). The entire brush is the area portal shader. Is there something I am doing wrong?

Ok, is the door and area portal flush with structural brushes?

Also, are you sure it isn't working? Try r_showtris 1, and see if what's behind the door isn't being rendered until the door opens...

If you did do that (and are sure), then again, make sure the door and area portal is flush on all sides to a structural brush.

One thing I noticed, if you have a door/areaportal, and it has LOS with another door/areaportal, it will render the leafs adjacent to both door/areaportals, even from behind the first one. But the other leafs in between the first door and the second door won't be...

I've also noticed that if you have to areaportals across from each other that sometimes one of the doors will get an HOM effect..

The homm effect oftens happens with area portals that are inside team'ed doors.

ahhhhh.... thanks for the info wade. I was wondering why it used to only happen to some of my doors and not al of them.. (only happened to the teamed ones now that I think of it.)

Try covering all but one side of the area portal brushes with common/skip (a shader included with q3map2). Also...what exactly do you mean by "do absolutely nothing?" How can you tell? If the game's drawing stuff on both sides, make sure there isn't a window or other way to see across into the next leaf.

for some reason, the r_showtis 1 command doesnt work for me. i start my map with codes enabled, then type that in the console and hit enter. this does nothing, so i restart the map, and when i do i typed r_showtris, and it said that it was set to 1 (on), but still no triangles. Is there a setting I need to enable?

I think the area portals are not working because fps does not improve when i am looking at a closed door over when i am looking at an open one. is this a correct assumption?

-thanks

I'm guessing you're testing it in multiplayer mode? You will need to first type in developer 1 in order for it to work. I know, this isn't mentioned in richdeisel's tutorials, but, well.... it should be.

ok thanks, the showtris is working now, but as i thought, the area portals arent working. i tried what wedge said, and it didnt work. if i am using the skip texture, does it matter which side of the brush has the area portal texture on it?
