Anyone in here like Anime?

If you dunno what I'm talking about, they're cartoons like Dragonball Z, Gundam Wing, Neon Genesis, and yes, even Poke'mon and Sailor Moon.

(Of course, I don't count any hentai or ecchi as anime, that crap is just plain sick)

I am a huge fan of animation--the grand Warner Bros. and Disney cartoons, the classic Max Fleischer black-and-white Popeye cartoons, the stuff that is animated at a rate of 24 different frames per second.

What's the frame-rate of Anime? It looks like about 4 frames a second. There is no fluid motion, just jerk-jerk-jerk. To me, Anime is the antithesis of animation. Sorry, but I just don't grok it.

well i can tell you are young... robotech... not macross... but robotech was the first series of robotech... It aired in the 70' or 80's, not quite sure... i was really young then, i'm 21 now.
they have macross now... robotech is older than voltron... i didn't really understand the cartoon but the mechs were cool. It was focused towards teens, alot of deeper meaning than a 4-9 year old could understand

I dislike anime too, except for Speed Racer. I used to watch that show when I was three years old and it will always have a special place in my heart. And his car, the Mach 5 - it was totally cool.

Of course, watching reruns of the show doesn't spark the same nostalgia that I have in my mind. Something about the dialogue where the characters' mouths blink from fully opened to fully closed is just somewhat unsettling to me http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/wink.gif)

I love Robotech and Voltron too. Robotech was originally a japanese cartoon called Macross. So, Macross is robotech. They changed it for us Americans. How nice of them. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/smile.gif)

ohhh.... you are wiser than I. I never realized it was the same cartoon. I watch macross all the time. I just thought it was the same artists and characters... Shows how much I remember from my childhood.

Actually, the way I heard it, Robotech is based on Macross, not just a retranslation.

I haven't seen any of the TV episodes/movies http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/frown.gif) but I've read the Robotech novel series (Awesome, BTW) and I have some of the RPG books. If you look close, you might note that the mecha are different; Macross gives the Veritechs a more organic look, they're much cooler IMHO.

Currently, the only anime I can find (that I like) is Sailor Moon.

Well let me say I'm NOT into Anime. I've forced myself to sit there and watch a few episodes of Dragon BallZ, Sailor Moon, or what have you. I've even (unfortunately) seen some of the so-called "tentacle pr0n" (horrible, who digs this $#!@?!??).

Maybe it's the culture barrier.. my first exposure to "Anime" was with Phantasy Star 2 on my genesis. I thought it was a little odd, but the game was cool, so I let it slip. I had Voltron, but I never watched the show or anything, so I don't count that.

In all, I guess I don't understand the obsession some people have with Anime.

And of course I'm sick of the hoopla over Poke'mon and all that ilk. It's like some people have a problem with Jar Jar, and I have a problem with this. I am just sick of hearing about how wonderful it is. ; P

Most of it is just like any other comic-book or cartoon. You have the dinner plate sized eyes, the big heads, the elongated limbs or overbulked bodies, the sweat, the odd colored hair, the whacky haircuts, the huge explosions, the flashy costumes, the exaggerated emotions, and the overly "cute" characters that are way over the top to the point of being obnoxious. And then there's the techno music... (nothing wrong with that though!).

Most of what I have seen really didn't impress me. Sure it's flashy, but where's the substance? I laugh at some of the bad dubbing, the stereotypes, the slapstick, and the absurd plots. But it's just not my thing.

Each to his/her own I guess...

You can't flat out say that Anime Sucks.

Because if you don't look directly at the animation portion of Anime and American Cartoons, you can clearly see that the drawing is much better.

<font color="#ff00ff">Don't get me wrong, I LOVE anime, but i think batman has some good animation too. Despite the little detail. I think it is still good.
I think what is important is the action and how well it keeps my attention. I find anime to hold my attention better than most because most of it is martial arts and Sword fighting and that stuff. I love that kinda stuff. always have and always will. Saving the world is in anime alot. And that what also makes square a great company, You're always saving the world in the final fantasy series!

Hey now.. I like Batman the Animated Series! IMHO, the best cartoon to come out of the 90's (okay Ren & Stimpy was kind of fun, but hey..).

I of course do not like it BECAUSE of the animation. It resembles Dick Tracy with the hard edges and square jaws.

However, the comparison is not fair, because one, that is a clip from the show vs. a still drawing from an anime source.

To be fair, take a video grab from an anime tape and post it up vs. batman. ; )

I dislike Japanese Anime mainly because it all tends to look so much alike (originality and creativity are good) and the characters are so laughably exaggerated, and the plots are so absurd. I also mentioned some other reasons why I tend to dislike it. ; P
I guess even at best, to me, Anime just isn't anything special, but if you like it, that's fine.

Has anyone seen Wrath of the Ninja, its unbeleivable, its an oldie but a goodie. One thing about Anime, you can't watch a dubbed version because they usually cut the good stuff out for American audiences. Check out an episode of Evangelion, or Dragonball Z(not the Cartoon network crap, the uncut stuff), when you see Goku get pissed off, its a glorious thing. The you will see that Anime holds its own versus American Cartooons, although no Anime can even compare to He-Man, cause He-Man is the bomb.
