Hey, I am just somewhat curious,

but is it possible to make a lightsaber? not a real one of course, but one where you could say, push the button and the blade would it extend, glow, and make that awesome lightsaber noise we all know and love?

I have seen where people have made them out of graflex or old old camera piping and such, but I have never seen a replica with a blade. Could this be done and how?

You mean like a real one. No, not yet, but maybe sometime in the future.

Do you mean a blade made out of light or a extending rod that glows ?

we have the tech to make the second one , but i dont think we have the laser tech to stop the visible beam without it going way to far.

I once made a lightsaber out of cream cheese, scotch tape, and a pair of dirty underwear. It worked pretty good.

yes it is very possible to make a fake one, like out of plastic or something, but as far as a real one, you couldn't keep the beam from going on and on, unless maybe you had 2 hand grips, (one at each end), but i doubt that.

Qpan, Lightsaber technology has nothing to do with lasers. Most people think that lasers are a way to mkae lightsabers, but it is a scientific rule that laser cannot stop byitself as in the movies. But what is possible is the PlasmaSaber. This way, the lightsaber can behave just like the one in the movie. It glows, it extends to a certain length. So it is possible.

Yeah, I think so, of course the "handle" to generate the beam would be the size of a building. ; )

yes true, maybe the hand grips would be the size of a small building, we could still use them though, of course only after we've discovered the force for extra strength. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/wink.gif)

Technically, the handle would be the size of the Empire State Building. The Science of Star Wars by somebody who's name I forget, explains this in better detail then I could here.

Check the Star Wars history:

5000 years ago, during the Golden Age of the Sith, "lightsabers" were actually huge conductor crystals (carved into the shape of a blade) that were hooked up to a hand grip which was connected via cable to a belt-mounted generator. The Sith would wear their sabers in sheaths just like conventional swords, or carry them in their hands with the generator switched off.

When the generator was on, the blade/crystals would humm with staticy energy, and glow, when they were off, the blades were inert.

We should start simple, and let the technology move ahead on its own until we can get "modern" lightsabers
