According to Arthur Clarke, right about now we should have a homicidal computer in
Jovian orbit. Of course, what we've really got is the upcoming launch of Windows XP and
MacOS X.

The Top Real Reasons HAL Went Insane

5> While processing genealogical records, HAL discovers that his great-grandfather was
Microsoft Bob.

4> Dave's insistence that the most important task the most powerful computer ever
created can perform is to find, download and catalog porn.

3> Saw his best friend, Mir, hurled flaming into the atmosphere
at the command of humans.

2> Bowman advanced a pawn to the eighth rank and said "King me!" one too many times.

1> Dave programmed HAL to introduce himself by saying, "All your base are belong to us."

I have no idea what you're talking about, but I can agree with #4. What a great waste of tehcnology! Thanks to SciFi, there's a popular myth that as technology progresses, so will mankind until we've reached a state of peace between mankind, lack of war and murder, no hunger, etc, or until we evolve to our "next step of evolution".

That would only happen if mankind became more noble, and technologicl advances won't make that happen. We'll just continue to use technology as a means to our constant ends: make money, assume more wealth, be entertained, lust, etc. We can do it faster, more accurately and store more one one machine than ever before, but we're doing the same things. Playing games, watching porn, buying and selling. But we AREN'T improving ourselves or anyone else. VERY few of us are using the technology to save the planet, save mankind or better ourselves and each other.

BTW, who is Arthur Clarke, HAL, Dave, etc.

You're joking, right?

You've never heard of 2001: A Space Odyssey?? http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/eek.gif)

Written by Arthur C. Clarke, one of the fathers of modern SF?!?

And you dare call yourself an SF fan! http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/mad.gif)

BTW, has anybody visited andromedaascendant.com? Somewhere during the tour, Rommie comments that 2001 and Westworld are among her favourite old-Earth movies. Scary.

Open the hangar bay doors please, Rommie.
I'm sorry Dylan, but I can't do that.

BeastMaster, I am a SF fan, but not hardcore I guess since I have never seen 2001! (Here come the rotten vegetables!) There are probably hundreds of SF books and movies that I haven't read and seen, and that's probably true of most of us, except those who are nerdy enough that we don't have a life outside of entertaining ourselves. Let's see, between work, marriage and playing in a band, and the fact 99.5% of the times I do see a movie or rent a video it's with my wife, which usually rules out SF films, and the fact that I'm not an avid reader...I think you can get the picture!

Yeah, read the novels, pretty cool. 2061 was especially fun. Although I wouldn't suggest "3001" unless you're a purist, it's pretty boring in comparison with the others, like ol' AC ran out of steam.

The first movie was pretty cool, nothing like it had been done before at the time. Of course it's pretty slow moving perhaps for the average sci-fi fan.

I know all this stuff b'cause I plan to be an SF writer.

I'm taking a Sci-fi writing course this summer, actually. Both because it's only offered in summer and because there's a babe I know who's also taking it. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/cool.gif)
