X-wing vs TIE-Fighter won't install

I'm running XP service pack 2 and can't begin the installation of X-wing vs TIE-Fighter.

The install launcher opens when I insert the cd but when I click on the install button it makes a noise and disappears and nothing else happens!

It makes no difference if I find the setup.exe or install.exe files and double-click on them.
I am using the windows 95 compatability mode but this has made no difference.

Any ideas?

I've given a PM on another board to someone who might have ideas about how to get the game to install. Just be patient. :)

Also forgot you can post on the LucasArts tech support forums (http://forums.lucasarts.com). User Emkay1001 is pretty good w/ these things. :D

Are you running 64-bit windows?

I'm just running 32-bit.
When I try to install I kept task manager open and it shows wowexec.exe and system.exe in the processes but after they open nothing more happens.
When I try to shutdown after this the computer gives an error message about a 16-bit process failing to close.

Sounds like the install is starting and then "stalling"

Have you tried removing compatability mode. XWA is designed for '98 +, not '95.

This is XvT he's talking about, not XWA. This might've been posted in the Classic Games' X-Wing Trilogy and X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter forum, but he correctly posted here, as this is supposed to be the section for all of the X-Wing games now.

I stand corrected, although the installer is the same for both irrc.

I can't think what to suggest, as I've never had any problems.

Try fiddling with all the compatability modes.

Time for a system spec, I think.

WS, have you tryed Vince, he posts here on occasion.

He's floating around, but I'm not sure how much technical expertise he can lend to this problem.

Had this exact same problem. Boot into safe mode (press f8) before windows splash screen after POST and then install xvt and bop in safe mode. Reboot into normal windows and all should work fine! :)

Thanks VPR. It worked straight away after going into safe mode.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Nice save, VPR. I had forgotten about the safe mode trick. Have one on me. :guiness:
