go check out THE INTERNET MOVIE DATABASE (http://www.imdb.com) ... you can search for each actor, see their birthdate, then do the math from when the movies came out.

Return of the Jedi was released in 1983

Harrison Ford was born in 1942, so he was 41
Mark Hamill was born in 1951 , so he was 32
Carrie Fisher was born in 1956, so she was 27

as for the characters...

Han was 33 and Luke & Leia were 24 in ROTJ

Ehm, that is not biological possible, even in Star Wars. :)

Considering Luke and Leia are twins thye gotta be the same age.

Unless you ment "all in their 20's, except Han".

The ages of the actors and the characters they play don't match. That's a given, even for the Original Trilogy.

Also, each movie wasn't made in one year (except ROTJ, I hear) so the actors aged some from start to finish. Well they always age, but I mean a few years.

Sides, I don't think George had the whole brother-sister thing figured out in 1977. Remember he was still having them kissing and releasing trailors talking about them being "in love." Unless he's some perv, I think he didn't have it planned...

Plus, the ages of the characters are never stated on screen, we can only surmise based on other factors. They really come from the official literature, which, as we know, can change if Lucas changes his mind.

Or, he wanted to throw people off thinking that Leia and Luke was siblings :)

He went to great lenghts to keep alot of the great revelations from public, and even most of the people working on the films, eyes.

I saw on an official Star Wars site that Luke and Liea were 18 in ANH so ESB they are 21 because it is rumured that ESB is 3 years after ANH. How old they are in RTJ, is unknown to me.

That would make them 22 in RotJ as it takes place 1 year after.

Timeline:
TPM: -31 BBY
AotC: -21 BBY
RotS: -19 BBY
ANH: 0
ESB: 3 ABY
RotJ: 4 ABY

Roughly. :D

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to add:
BBY: Before Battle of Yavin
ABY: After Battle of Yavin

:D

Yeah this is what I thought too, and Han would be 31 then.

why is the battle of yavin the focal point? surely episode 3 would have made more sense in dividing the eras

The Battle of Yavin was the turning point in the Civil War and Palpatine's rule.

Before Battle of Yavin

Stormtroopers >>> Rebels

After Battle of Yavin

Rebels >>> Stormtroopers

Well either that, or because it was in the first-made SW movie. :D
