I have recently installed Star Wars: X Wing Collector's Series. X Wing and X Wing vs. Tie Fighter work, but Tie Fighter does not. I click on play Tie Fighter and it says I need to install Direct X 5.2 Which is old. So I do it and it says I have everything except Direct 3D. Where do I get this? I have Direct X 8.1. And it's wierd because I go to start and run and then I typed: dxdiag and it says I have Direct 3D. So why isn't it recognizing it?

I suspect you're running WinXP, in which case, the following link might help:

http://home.comcast.net/~s-sanders/Tie95WinXP/)

Keep in mind, you'll only be able to run TIE95 on WinXP w/o hardware acceleration (but big news on this front might be coming shortly ;) ).

or if you want to wait a few days...there is someone who is making a patch for X-wing and Tie Fighter 95 to use 3d accleration in WinXP and win2000 There will be a post about it on xwingalliance.net once the author gives the clearance and thinks it's ready i think lucasfiles is going to be the offical host for it.

It seems that on that site that there is a new version of that Microsoft Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit. It's now v 3.0 not 2.0. And it's different. What should I do? The directions on that first site do not match this newer version of the program.

I've contacted the author of that page to see if he could post updated directions. In the meantime, if you still have a copy of Windows 98, I'd install that on a separate partition and dual-boot, with TIE95 on the Win98 partition.

Thank you very much guys for all your help. I'll continue to play it on my 98 computer which I was doing. I will wait. Thanks again. Oh and when you said that there will be a patch posted on the forums of xwingalliance.net did you mean their forums?

That hardware acceleration patch sounds very interesting. I just re-installed these old classic gems, and to be able to play them with accelerated graphics would be stellar!

So how did these people become the ones he was going to send it to? Are these like volunteers to test the patch or something?

So did you have the problem too like me where after you went to the game it said install Direct X 5.2, did the same thing happen to you where it didn't recognize Direct 3D and you couldn't get past that? And if so then this fixed that?

Cool!! Can't wait. I've been checking for the post on the xwingalliance.com forum since you said they would post it there once once it has been released.

Now I heard that the reason why Tie Fighter wouldn't work on XP is because the file structure is different from 95 and 98. How does the patch correct this?

patch really doesn't correct it what it does is ulitizes the microsoft software argh forget the name of it, what the program does is allow 95, and 98 programs to work in winxp, so this patch has been worked around to enable 3d acceleration in x-wing and tie fighter.

Oh so is it like one of those even though you may have downloaded it and now posses it you can't distribute it unless you get permission from the author? Is it something like that? Or is it that testers can't distribute it just yet, until it is actually released kind of deal?

Having another look @ the page I originally gave you, it appears you downloaded the ACT from the link on the page (which, as you said, is version 3.0). The version 2.0 the page says to use should be on your Windows XP CD. :)

Well before when I went to his site it said missing link in his download. I had to go around the internet to get v3.0. Couldn't fin v2.0 Oh I looked on my XP CD couldn't find it.

Anyway mow I go back to his site and I was now able to download v2.0. It seems he got my e-mail. I e-mailed him about this too. So I downloaded it and followed his directions and now it works. Thank you so much.
