In my opinion, no force power is "lame". Any power can be countered by another power.

Using absorb still takes damage (for lightning), doesnt really make a difference.

No force power is lame, it's how you use them. Grip and kick aren't lame, but grip kick can be recognised as lame, or at leats continuous use of some 'evil combos' (theres always a counter though)
