Do you think there are other life forms out there with similar or more advanced technology than us, or do you think we are alone in being 'intelligent'.
I personnaly think there has to be some form of life out there, and I dont think we are the only intelligent race in the universe. Maybe there is a twin planet to earch but they were 'Lucky and didnt get hit by a meteor or whatever happend and there are dinosaurs roaming the planet. Or maybe there is a civilisation of aliens with the same basic technology as ours. Maybe there are just little microbes that float about planets. Or maybe, just maybe there are very advanced races having an intergalactic war? Makes you think doesnt it?
i dont think we are the only life form out there and i dont think aliens have to have the same kind of enviroment as us. i say that because people make a big deal about the atmosphere on other planets when there could be life forms out there that say require carbon as their base element needed to live. besides it would be one hell of a waste of space to just have mankind be the only intellegent life form.
Now, i've not taken Chemistry, so DONT flame me if i'm flaunting my ignorance here........but aren't WE carbon based life-forms?
Yeah I thought they were aswell, thats why people assume that everything else is. Just had a wierd thought, what If our planet was just a cell in the body of another person in a whole other universe, not exacly a cell but you get me right?
yes humans and all life on this planet are carbon based life forms. so what im saying is if there are aliens they could live anywhere cuz they dont have to be carbon based life forms they could be based from any element.
What he's saying is that there can be non-carbon lifeforms out there, like silcon(arent we that too, though?) h2o or others.
I think there has to be. It would be too much of an waste.
Who knows, I'm not even sure on how we would find them. But, it's a chance. The chance of life once on Mars got me curious for awhile, if it's possible on earth it's possible elsewhere, chances are slim though. And whatever the lifeform would "be made of", it would have to be adaptable to the the conditions it is on whatever planet the lifeform is from so take that into consideration because I wouldn't imagne that there are many planets similar to earth, but the atmosphere conditions would have to be PERFECT and MUCH similar to earth.........
Why would it have to be like earth? What if the aliens breathed carbon monoxide or something :) Yes there could be life on other planets but until we find them... I don't feel much excitement about em. :)
I meant things like you wouldn't have a creature living at 450 Degrees Celsius, or have a creature living without water......lol......Carbion Monoxide!? :p
Well yea just giving a crazy example lol I'm a :nut:
But I'll bet that there are some things out there that can live in 445F... maybe
I personally think that this thread is QUITE racist....i mean, of COURSE some of the aliens crossing into foreign countries are intelligent, how could you group them all as ignora......OH, SPACE aliens......aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh.........
How would you respond to an encounter with intelligent extra-terrestial life, that is obviously superior to us in every respect?
Would you perceive them as enemies? As allies? As animals? As gods?
In answer to Cjais I would want to befriend them in hopes of learning all they know that we don't.
I'd probably be on top of some sky scraper with a big banner saying "Welcome to Earth, friends!"
And then I'll see a bright green light coming out of their ship that annihilates me and everything else within 10 miles. :( :D
To answer my own question, I'd try to please them in every way I could.
If they can destroy us easily if we revolt or resist, there's no point in doing it. Better to accept them and live a little longer.
If we did encounter an alien species, they would obviously be more advanced than us in every way so it would be wise to take the peaceful aproach. I strongly believe that we have already encountered aliens and the US government is hiding it from us.
There are more stars in our very own galaxy than there are grains of sand on the earth. There are countless galaxies in the universe. If every star has it's own planetary system, what are the chances that conditions on some of those planets are perfect for supporting life? The odds are that there are many planets out there that support life. If there isn't it would be an awful waste of space.
We already know of over 100 planets outside our own solar system but so far they have been gas planets such as Jupiter. Sooner or later we will come across planets similar to our own and that is when the real fun begins.
I think that we are technically Silicon based life forms, not Carbon...
We will see once they investigate the moon Europa, of Jupiter I believe. They believe in studies of the moon that it has a frozen lake on it. There is Lake Vostok in the remote wastes of Russia, which has a thick ice layer (4km) to see what kind of "alternative evolution" has occured, since it has had no outside influence on it. That means no sunlight to provide life, to be part of the food chain.
They are just trying to work out how to get into the water beneath and not have the outside world effect it. A heated drilling probe seems to be the idea, with the ice sealing above it as it melts through to seal off any chance of contamination.
Once this is researched, then we may send a similar probe to Europa, and see if there is a form of life there, that exists without the need for the sun to provide the energy for life.
The more investigations there are, it seems to be that there is less likely a chance of other intelligent life out there, and if there is they maybe too far away for us ever to find them.
What if these aliens found us, looked at us, and just killed us there and then, no questions, no research, nothing. They may not even understand us, not able to comprehend our world.....
Conspiracy theories abound about many things, everyone loves to think that the US Govt is hiding everything, from Aliens, to Elvis and JFK amongst the more noteworthy!
Although there is absolutely no evidence of any kind to suggest there is intelligent life besides us, mathmatical probability implies that we are not alone.
"I think that we are technically Silicon based life forms, not Carbon..."
That is technically wrong. WE ARE NOT SILICON BASED. IF THAT IS THE CASE OXYGEN WOULD KILL US.
WE ARE CARBON BASED.
AS WE NEED WATER TO EXIST.
Going back to the original Question...
Are we alone. That can be answered several ways, but i really belive we "Man" where put on this planet after life started to die off. The meteor that killed the dinosaurs was a BIT conveinent??
Why not an alien race who saw NO Point in dinos.!!! its not like they could talk? or make things. Then man appeared. And for thousands of years lived in CAVES....
take our histroy of modern man. in the last 50 years we can orbit the EARTH!!!! its a bit strange? no? so i belive these aliens to exist right now and probably DO live amongst us!
Have u seen Bush? Micheal Jackson recently.... Just sit back in your chair as you read this and look at how "technical" man kind has evolved over the last 50 years...
then look at how long man has BEEN on the planet...
200,000 years? so in approx 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000000000001% of the time we have been here we can NUKE/Orbit the earth/ Fly @ speed of sound/ and still we kill for money/Oil.

If you regard the early Homo's and Australipethicus' as human, we've been here for about 5 million years. And take off more than half of those 0's.
Science is incredible, aint it? I don't think aliens have anything to do with our brain's capaticy to invent tools.

When did life start to "die off"? It's been multiplying for as long as I know.

Depends on techlevel. Someone (don't remember who) once said that: "Any xenos species with suffecient techlevel will be indistinguishable from God." or something to that effect.
So:
High tech: Gods.
Comparable tech: Blasphemous wretches to be scoured from the galaxy (not my view, but the one that I think that most of humanity would adopt, given the history of our species).
Low tech (ie: We find them first): Lesser beings (again not my opinion, just thoughtful guesswork).
As for the chance that ET drops by one of these days: There is the Drake equation, but we still have to determine L, and I reckon it to be pretty low.
I think that there is life in deep space (well not in deep space, but you get my meaning). Logically it would be carbonbased. Why? Simple: The universe is composed of H, He, N, C, and O (I think that's all). The rest of the elements don't appear in significant amounts (in fact if you look at interstellar levels, the only elements in the universe are H and He).
Of these, only carbon has been able to create the incredibly (but not irreducibly) complex biological constructions that life is composed of.
So: Aliens: Yes. Intelligent aliens: Why not? (Intelligent) aliens in our back yard: No.
The meteor that killed the dinosaurs was a BIT conveinent??
While the meteor that struk Yucatan 64 mill yrs ago is by far the best known natural disaster to cause mass extinctions, there have been many other meteor strikes resulting in huge loss of biosphere. AND it's gonna happen again, presumably, and unless we can "divert" the next one's "attention" (with nukes on its side or something), to make it change course, it's gonna hit us hard.
If we did encounter an alien species, they would obviously be more advanced than us in every way so it would be wise to take the peaceful aproach. I strongly believe that we have already encountered aliens and the US government is hiding it from us.
CONSPIRACY. Sorry, LeXX, but I don't go with conspiracy hypothesises ('cept maybe "The Dead Sea Scrolls Deciet").
Also: Why would the alien species need to be far more advanced than we are? What if we get our hands out from under our collective asses and start getting the space program back on track? Why couldn't we find them first?

If they could manage to reach us then I think they would have better tech. They could fly faster (otherwise they probbably wouldn't get to us) :)
While there may indeed be intelligent life on other planets, i highly doubt that they are on earth, for the simple reason of distance......the nearest star is Alpha Centauri, and it is 4 lightyears away from us (approx. 37,840,000,000,000 kilometers) and it is a good deal closer to us than ANY other star.....other stars are thousands upon thousands of lightyears away from us. And what are the odds that a space faring species would be able to travel that massive distance and actually find Earth out of the billions of other planets to see? Not particularly good methinks.
If we found aliens first, would we attack them if they looked threatening. Maybe there is a planet full of aliens that dont have technology, but they are intellegent. Like the Aliens from the film Alien. What if the aliens found us first with cool technology and helped us, but then we get caught up in an intergalactic war. Maybe we are aliens, when the meteor hit and killed all the dinos we might have "Landed" on earth. Maybe loads of meteors crashed into the sea and all fishes are aliens (I dont like fishes, fishes are tricksy)
Theres a point though, Deep in the sea, like DEEP DEEP where noone has been. What do you think might be underthere, some sort of "uber-race" or maybe just "sea dust"

Maybe without our knowing there is a whole network of alien life forms in the universe, able to travel almost instantaneously towards each other. OR maybe an ancient race with great echnology targeted trillions of planets and loaded up meteors full of people and fired them out. Over billions of years they crash and life forms

Dude you should write a book or something. Cause that sounds REALLY weird.
i know that we are not the only ones in the universe. i along with 4 people seen a UFO. and it was similar to how people describe them looking. except it was'nt a silveryish saucer. it was kinda like a yellowish very dim light. it almost looked like a round peice of cheese was cut into 1/2. this observation lasted about 3 seconds, then really fast it zigged and zagged. and shot out away into the sky. not only was it kinda strange it was beutiful. that night it was very dark, the sky was pitch black. there were clauds, but it was so black we could'nt see that there were any clauds. when the UFO shot away it broke through the clouds leaving a big whole, and kinda like a neonish purple light streeked back, kinda like a fade. so it was weird and beutiful. i have many theories that scientists agree on, one is that they come to check on us to see how we are evolving. our planet is always forever evolving, climate and as well as species. but one day we will have to leave this planet for 2 reasons. first we as a species are over populating the planet, and one day will use up all of our planets resources. second is the change of climate. we can not stop evolution, mass earth quakes and as well as another ice age. we will have to leave this planet. so my theory is other life forms come and visit us for the sole purpose of studying us to see if we have evolved in technology. or they might be here to help us with knowledge. but since that has'nt happend i can only guess it is because we as humans have not learned about "UNIVERSAL COSMIC BROTHERHOOD" anyone can observe we like to kill each other. if you were a space traveler would you want to go and hang out at a planet that everyone is barbaric and kill anything on site. we humans have a tendancy to shoot things we are affraid of. think of it as like the hunters who put animal heads on their walls too. now this may seem a real deep subject, but its only my theory.
i have another theory that scientists also agree on. if we do need to leave this planet we have to find a new planet to live on. see but to the topic, the aliens are more advanced than us. as most of you know space tavel is not fast, and even to go to another galaxy to faster speed would still take a long time. by what i observed from the UFO i seen it was like a speed of zero to a hundred in lest than a second. but my theory is there is a gate, like a star gate. to jump to one galaxy to another. and if no space jump exists, then when we do leave the planet we would be on a long journey. scientists believe we would have to creat a huge breading ship. these ships have to travel and find a planet that we can live on. and hyper sleep is a issue too. another theory scientists say is that if breeding ships are impossible to make, then we would have to change ourselves. by this meaning we have to alter our aperance. yes mutating our body to with stand the climates of other planets.
Sorry Ninja but I dont beleive you. Sure you can say that but there is no way to prove it. Its like me saying, *Ahem* I figured out how to rip a whole through space and time and travel to anywhere in the universe in no time at all. But im not telling you how.
Anyway, Does anyone find the fact that our oceans could be in habited by huge titan like creatures, just swiming causeing huge tidal shifts (OOOOH OOOOOH)

Sorry don't believe you. All thats caused by earthquakes as far as I know.
there is a theory about space travel, that went from a scientist to a movie. this movie was called event horizon. the old theory was to travel from point A to B is a straight line. i'm going to try to explaine this as best as i can. a peice of paper has A on the left and B on the right. fold paper in half to where A and B meet. poke a hole through it. something like that. so that A and B co-exist. the fastest way to point A and B is to co-exist. that is the theory many scientists talk about. so i would not be the only one you would disagree with.
and also we have never actually went through a "black hole" or the milky way. scientists think that one of those is the space jump.

Actually, scientists think that Wormholes are the way to take a shortcut from point A to point B. Most scientists are completely against the jumping through a black hole idea....because a black hole is simply extremely dense matter....it's not a gate to anywhere, and if it were, passing through it would be impossible.
Yes a black hole as far as I know would rip anything apart that gets close to it. Wormholes are the only way to get from point A to B like that and noone even knows if they exist or not.
yes yes thats what i meant "worm holes" i got it mixed up not the black hole. its just some stuff i heard about a few years ago. but there has to be a spave jump because if other life forms lived many light years away they still would have to make a jump. its like we need to get to a city far away from us. and the best way to get there is by the free way. you can get what i'm trying to say right?
Except that traveling on a highway doesn't involve finding the smaller than atoms wormholes, making them big enough to send an entire ship through, and then having enough exotic matter (approximately equaling the mass of jupiter by calculations) to hold that wormhole open long enough to pass through.........;)
all i really have to say is anything is possible. things like speed of light travel will definitely not happen while im alive but i believe it will. and for those saying speed of light travel is impossible you're wrong and dont use einstein to prove your point i read the books i studied the stuff what he said is if you have a light on your ship and you were going the speed of light it would still be ahead of you. well thats because its getting basically a headstart type of thing. you are infront of me and start running then i start running we run the same speed you will always be ahead of me. now that thats out of the way. i think time travel is possible but it will come with extremely risky consequences. aliens they exist they are out there somewhere who knows maybe they are here on earth maybe under the ocean in the deepest parts. i believe someday we will finally reach the bottom of the oceans but not for a long long time. that is if mankind doesnt destroy itself these things can happen.

Perhaps you should know more about science before stating such things.....almost every single theory that einstein had has been proven, so you can't just denounce him. And if you were going the speed of light on a ship and fired a light off it would go the speed of light away from you. Meaning it would seem to be moving at twice the speed of light, except it wouldn't. So it's not a head-start sort of thing. If you fired it off from right next to you while traveling at the speed of light it would still go away from you. Speed of light at relativistic speeds is really really really weird, and the more you think about it the less it makes sense.
Traveling at the speed of light becomes impossible because to propel anything with mass at the speed of light would require an infinite force....and there is no such thing as an infinite force.
Its called the Drake Equation people!
N=(R*)(Fp)(Ne)(Fi)(Fi)(Fe)(L)
That is, The total number of civilizations in our galaxy we can detect (N) equals the rate of the formation of stars suitable for the developement of life (R*) times Fp, the number of stars with planets, times planets that can support life (Ne), [breathe] times the planets where life can appear, and does, times the number of planets with actual intellegent life, times the number of intellegent species that actually try to communicate that fact (radio or otherwise) times L, the probablilty that the civilization will merely wipe itself out.
It works out to about 10000 planets in our galaxy with possible intellegent life. Thats still a lot, all things considered.
(and no, i didnt copy and paste that)
Bah I say they are a myth that is just ebig told by a bunch fo people trying to be on TV.

Not to dissagree with anything else you siad, but they're not proven yet, thats why they call them theories.
And considering the size of the universe, _CKY_, its totally impossible there arent other life forms in the universe.
true but i still think its a big lie lol:D just my opinion maybe there are aliens and when they read this they will shoot at me
I never said there were aliens at your front door, I just said they exist. I seriously doubt we'll be communicating with anything within my or many more generation(s).

Not true. Theories can easily be proven hypothesises and they often incorporate laws as well. Calling them theories does not mean that they're not true.
Actually, Newton's law of gravity was disproven by Einstien. It was instead replaced with his theory. His theory has not yet been disproven.
Laws are descriptive generalization about nature. Disproving the law of gravity did not mean everything was suspended in mid-air until a Einstein's new theory took its place. This is one of the things that bothers me most about creationists - they're lack of understanding about how science works seemingly grants them irrefutable proof of creation. Blergh.
Regarding the Drake equation, the figure of "L" is very speculative - we can't know this for sure really, has we only have ourselves to judge by. What would happen if a big ass meteor rammed into a planet that was just about to grow into advanced forms of life?
Ok, ok, its obvious to me now its futile to get technical with you.
And I never said I was a creationist, if thats what you were alluding to.

Ah, don't worry. I was just correcting you so the actual creationists wouldn't start getting ideas in the head about evolution "only being a theory, not a fact". I've seen too many of those already ;)
Well, I've heard a couple of times that because the universe is so unimaginably huge that there has to be life out there somewhere, but aren't the chances of life being here at all incredibly small?(see History of the Universe post)
