Footage Instead Of Cutscenes

Does anybody else think that clips from Episode I would have been better than the cutscenes used? Most FMV's are of scenes that appear one way or another in the movie.

This gives me an idea; Zanzibar, try to pursuade LucasArts to use real actors from the movies in their next game. The cutscenes would look much better. I was amazed by Rebel Assault 2, and the quality of the movies; it had a realistic feel to it. But the game...eh, what can I say? No real freedom of movement.

Same goes for JK, except better gameplay.

Lucasarts got bit in the ass - HARD - with Jedi Knight's live-action cutscenes. All in all they were entirely unimpressive when compared with the amount of time and resources devoted to it - their production costs were so insane that the people they could afford to cast could barely act their way out of a wet paper bag. They made Jake Lloyd's Ep 1 Anakin performance seem like Oscar material in comparison. I'm pretty sure they decided to never again use live-action. LEC is a games company, not a film production house, and it was painfully obvious in JK.

<font face="BernardMod BT"><font color="green1">Yeah, but with TPM they could have just used scenes from the movie and saved money all around (and maybe use that extra time to work on more important aspects of the game).

Lucasarts had very little "development" contribution in TPM; all of the in-game stuff was handled by Big Ape, with LEC more of an overseer that their ideas were being carried out. LEC's cutscene department handled all of the cutscenes, so the suggestion that LEC could have used those resources to work on other areas of the game
isn't really feasible.

I do agree that it would have been quite nice to use actual TPM footage for our cutscenes, but a number of factors kept ILM footage out of our reach:

Most importantly was the schedule. Time-wise, we couldn't be certain that ILM would have all of the footage that we would need done in time. ILM was working incredible hours to get done in time for their May 99 release; as a rule, games need additional time to prepare sound etc. etc. Our cutscenes were done in mid-March.

after having JK and watching all the cutscenes there, i told myself that i never wanted to see a game with real actors doing cutscenes again. yes zanzibar, you were right, those actors couldn't have acted there way out of a paper bag, i loved JK except for the cutscenes. i like games with animated cutscenes better anyway

I haven't actually seen all of the cutscens for JK; Saesee Tom showed me a quick demonstration of the graphics, not the whole thing.

They're ok, but Boc was more annoying than Jar Jar. Oh yeah, does Boc have anything in connection with Darth Maul, what with the double sabers and all?

As for TPM's cutscenes, (you probably know this) the famous Obi-Wan's head-out-of-the-lake scene before level 2 was actually shot, but ended up on the editing room floor.

<font face="BernardMod BT"><font color="green1">Fortunately you don't have to watch the scenes to play the game.
