(stupid?) idea for mojo main page

I just had an idea... Right on the main page, there should a Message of the Moment, right near the top in plain sight. It could start out as something like "Welcome to Mixnmojo!"... Here's the niftyish part. After the page gets, oh say, 100 hits, a "change" button appears next to the message. Whoever clicks on the button can type in the new message, then submit it and the message updates and the change button disappears.
Yeah, it's silly, but it seems like the sort of interactive community type thing that makes Mojo fun. The message should have the name of the user who submitted it too. Probably wouldn't be too hard to program. And it could get a little competitive. :D
Anyone else like this idea?

Yeah, by making it only available to logged in membeers, you could help reduce "unwanted" posts. There may still be a few shady posts made though.

It is a pretty cool idea though. Mojo needs a few more fun things around the place.

wed have to find away around it becoming offensive though.

If something rude comes up, couldn't one of the main Mojo guys just change it?

Maybe you're caught putting something dirty up you get your account suspended for a week or something.

How quickly do 100 hits go by, anyway?

I think it's a great idea. But maybe it would work better on the community page rather than the main one, to avoid it clogging stuff up? And how hard would it to be to make it block out pre-programmed words, like these forums do? And how about a maximum word amount, eh?
 Trapezoid

The maximum word amount could just be set by the box you type the message into. Simple.
Does the comments feature have a swear filter? If they do, the MotD would probably just be a specially modified comments thread.
Oh, and there should be an archive of all the messages. Also easy if it's just a comments thread.

That's ok. Too bad nobody's posting to it now. But as long as Spaff or someone reads it...

Uh..

Well, I read it, and I'm sure other mojo staffers read it. It's a pretty good idea, too. Unfortunately our attention is dedicated to E3 right now, but we've got a lot planned for post-E3 joy.

Like that? (arrow appears to the left when you can change it)

Yeah, but maybe the arrow should be a button, or something a little more obvious.
Oh, and the text should be black. In fact, all the gray text on mojo is kinda hard to read.

I've got a couple of suggestions. Somehow we've got to buffer this so the same user can't keep posting over and over again. Maybe a once-a-day/week limit? I think it should either be set up to display a message for a set amount of time (so that it doesn't get overwritten immediately), or there should be multiple entries displayed randomly.

I like the faded grey text as it is in the concept though :).

The faded colour is good for anything inactive (like tabs, and no Mojo messages, etc.), but for anything else it gets a bit too difficult to notice. It took me a few seconds to see the added text and arrow up in the corner.

Well, since the Community section of the site is open, someone should look in to whipping this up! I still think it's a neat idea.

I made it light grey in the mockup like that because it will rarely have anything to do with Mojo... its just something you might notice not at first. I'd rather readers first notice the features and news before a wacky slogan that has nothing to do with anything...

Very true, but there's always somewhere in between.

Yeah, it should be a bit more noticeable, if nobody notices it then no one will race to change it and there'll be no challenge.

Heh :)
Groovy.

It should only register one hit per day per registered user, really, otherwise the server would probably die again due to everyone pushing 'Refresh'

I love the 'Mojo makes it happen' attitude.

In fact, that's what I'm gonna change the comment to ;)

hmm maybe we should revive this project :)
of course no one can actually do anything until nice mr DJG prgrams the thing...

but i still dont see how we can put something like that up and control the out put.... people can get around swear words, and i dont want it to go horribly wong.

Okayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy...
How about you do it like this:
First of all you have to submit your quote on a special page on mojo. Like, I go to the page and type in "Mojo - bad for your monkey" and then it gets stored on a list. Everytime the main page recieves a certain number of hits, say 200, the quote automatically changes to the next one on the list. That way someone could regularly check the list and remove any... unsavoury additions.

Yeah its definately worth a try, if only to stop ppl bumping this thread back up every few weeks asking 'is it done yet?'

Seriously though its still a good idea, perhaps it could be limited only to people who have a mojo account, that way if they do break the rules and someone spots it, they can be blocked from changing the 'slogan thingy' again.
You all know what I mean anyway.

Also, Simpsons 'pray for mojo' sample=genius.

Thats also a good idea Tones and id imagine it'd be a lot easier to implement too.
