Hope everyone had a cool Fourth.
Fireworks are just about my favorite thing in the world, next to great science fiction. We got to see two fireworks displays this year, one on the 3rd, one on the 4th. Both were great.
It seems like pyrotechnical technology keeps improving--I saw some fireworks this year I had never seen before, such as a thing that goes skyward in a brilliant, multiple white shower of sparks, with corkscrewing and pinwheeling offshoots, like an incredible comet shooting from the ground to the sky.
We had great weather this year, too--in the eighties instead of hundred-plus.
I never see a July 4th fireworks display without thinking about what it symbolizes--the sacrifice of those who endured real bombs, rockets, and bullets to purchase our freedom with their own blood.

Kurgan
awww, sorry to hear that Kurgan,
we had some at my house, but just dinky little bottle rockets, nothing major
Know what? Bottle rockets are illegal where I live. This year we had a really good firework show, then I went and lit some at my sister's house, and they were pretty good. Windy though, almost set a bush on fire. Hoses are very useful.

Accually, i think they should be illegal here too, i set a pine tree on fire, and, yes, hoses are VERY usefull.
You people scare me!
Bottle rockets are against the law here, too. There are too many dry cedar shake roofs here.
In fact, while eating our barbecued burgers, we noticed that the neighbors' (across the street) front porch roof was smoking. Apparently, they had started torching off fireworks early (it was still light out), and someone had the bright idea of throwing a spark-emitting device up in the air. It landed on the wooden roof, sparks were coming down through the underside, and they quick got a garden hose to put it out.
My brother was taping the whole thing with his camcorder, hoping he had footage of the next Darwin award recipients. No such luck. They managed to put it out in time.
These same people last year were shooting off M80s (also illegal). If one was a dud, they go over to it, pick it up in their hands, and look at it real close. For some unknown reason, these people still have all their fingers and eyes.

Being in Canada, I saw my fireworks display on the 1st.
It was drizzling, but cool; the rain was beading on my glasses, so I was watching the whole show through a prism, with all these weird lens-flare/distortion effects.

I was on vacation in Marco Island, FL. The hotels their set up a huge display of fireworks. So everybody went out and sat on the beach on the 4th.
