Idea for another Star Wars game...

I switched my brain on last night by mistake, and it started kicking some ideas around in my head [ouch, that hurts http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/wink.gif]) for some other Star Wars games.

What I came up with sort of developed out of a combination of reading too many X-Wing novels and playing Opposing Force...

Why not make an FPS game based on a team of Rebel Commandos? This would sort of return to the stomping grounds of the original Dark Forces, but instead of Kyle going on a series of linked missions, why not have a team of Rebel Commandos? They could be assigned to...

- steal ships
- destroy Imperial shipyards
- destroy Imperial weapon-making facilities
- infiltrate Imperial strongholds to steal information
- assassinate key Imperial officers
- storm detention centres to free captured Rebels

to name just a few.

The single-player game could have intelligent bot commandos, better than the sidekicks in Opposing Force, and each with special skills. You could have a Slicer, an explosives expert, an engineer, a sniper, and various others to enable you to carry out your missions. You could even pick and choose which ones you take with you, and the success of your mission is totally dependent on those choices.

I don't think there should be an emphasis on strategy, or it would become too unweildy and turn into a strategy game. But giving orders to your companions, and getting say, the sniper, to take up an appropriate position, and leaving them there ready for when you need them would be cool.

The missions could be split across a few levels each, to make them longer and more challenging. Each mission could start with a briefing, and your team being dropped at one or more locations. They then have to reach their objective without being discovered, carry out the goal, and make their way back out again. The last objective of a mission is to get as many of your team out alive as possible and get them to the pickup zone.

To make it even more challenging, you would have to deal with problems of terrain (like trying to find a way across a chasm), and the resident predatory species. You could also use different types of transport to get you within walking distance of your objective.

I think using disguises for some missions would be a very good idea to get inside enemy bases (as in MotS), with the need for stealth as well as hot blasting action.

What would really clinch a game like this is if you could *take over* different characters in your team at will, and see the game from their perspective to undertake specific tasks (like sub-missions within a mission). It would be rare to have your entire team together throughout a mission...they would have to split up to carry out certain specialist tasks. Again, you choose (as in Opposing Force) which of your team accompanies you, and who remains on guard.

When all hell breaks loose, you give your team-mates free reign to blast the Imperial scum, and get out of there as soon as possible.

pffzzzffttt! Ouch. That's it. My brain's blown a fuse. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/wink.gif)

Any thoughts on this? Or anyone else out there with some Star Wars game ideas?

That sounds like a good idea. It might take a while to create if it was created, like around 2-3 years (depending on how many people making it and how good they are) but it could be really good. It would be really interesting if you could take that to multiplayer and have as many people as you want be people up to a certain limit (probably around 32). If it could handle the lag that would be awesome. It would be good to have all those people humans and the rest be bots.

Ever heard of Rainbow 6 or Rogue Spear?
Well your idea is the same as
[Star Wars Meets Rogue Spear]

Ok??
hey if it was something new LucasArts would probably make it.
On the other hand... They're too dumb
Can't even make a Star Wars Online RPG
Think about how much money they could make!!

JediIgor: yes, I've heard of both of those games. I've even seen demos (though I haven't played either of them), and I wouldn't want this game to be like either of them.

Have you played Half Life: Opposing Force? It's a first-person shooter, but you get to *use* other marines, you can *drop* them where you like, and get others to accompany you into battle. There is *not* a lot of strategy/planning involved, just sensible choices, and you remain at the forefront of the action.

That's how I'd design it.

I also think Lucasarts *should* make a single-player RPG with a deep storyline based on another character. With Dark Forces they started a whole new thread of the Star Wars universe, and that was partly why it was so successful - it was fresh, not a rehash of the movies.

They need to do the same thing again, and get away from these major tie-ins to The Phantom Menace and any of it's sequels. As I've said before, we *know* that story. This is why I think they're taking a big risk with Obi-Wan. There had better be a lot of stuff *not* seen in the movie included in that game, or it's going to flop.

I also think the massively multiplayer online RPG is going to flop, because they simply won't be able to recreate the Star Wars universe in enough detail and variety as gamers would wish.

So they need to concentrate on making some more single-player games. Dark Forces III would be a good start, but they also need some fresh ideas.

That's why I started this thread http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/smile.gif)

So, why not come up with some ideas? You never know, perhaps we can convince Lucasarts to take notice of the gaming community and give us what we want?

that is a good idea, and it would probably be a great game. Another game that would be cool would be an RPG/action/shooter where you are a bounty hunter, and you have to try to get jobs and catch people. Then you could buy new equipment and upgrade your ship witht he bounty. You can make your own Hunter, or you can use someone like Boba Fett, IG-88, Bossk, Zuckuss, or Dengar. When your just traveling around waiting to get hired, it would be more like an rpg, but when you are chasing someone and trying to capture them, it would be a shooter/action.

Hmm maybe you're right
Yes i have opposing force...
still it would be like Star Wars meets opposing force. or maybe not i never played a half-life or an opposing force star wars mod...
About the SW RPG: Hey who cares if they couldn't recreate it good enough... think about all the fans out there wanting to play a game like that... if they could just make a world like endor or tatooine that would be pretty real... the money !!! THE MONEY!!!!

A good idea for a Star Wars First Person Shooter (the idea I've been dreaming of since MOTS came out):

A game (let's say based on the ObiWan engine) where you basically take control of a Dark Jedi/Sith. That is, it's a game that's the opposite of MOTS. Instead of being a "good" guy with the Force, you're a bad guy. You might be Darth Maul, Dark Kyle Katarn, Evil Mara Jade, Sariss, Jerec, Vader, doesn't matter! (Hey, maybe by the time Episode III comes around we'll get a game where you play as Vader?)

The main thing is, we get a chance to be the bad guys, the chance that was denied us when MOTS came out (forcing us to be the good guys and subjecting us to just one ending).

I guess I got spoiled by JK because you could choose your destiny and there were different endings based on your choice, making playing the SP game through again something you really wanted to do.

LEC, do us a favor and give us a "bad guy" game in the tradition of Jedi Knight. C'mon, I know I'd get it.

Oh, and as long as we're throwing out ideas for new SW games.. how about a "Bounty Hunter" type of game? Say, you control Boba Fett or some other thug who wants to rise to the top (LEC's answer to KingPin, without the swearing? hehe).

Another idea I've had for awhile, is one in which you control a vast crime syndicate or family. Say, you're Jabba the Hutt. That would be cool. Combine strategy and management, with political intriuge, and some action mini-games (like where you control assasins or bounty hunters on missions). That would be cool.

Fact is, while the good guys always win in the end, the new prequals have a decidedly dark side to them. Alot of adults like star wars, and seeing the shadier side of the beloved universe isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Of course, games always take liberty with the SW liscense, so this isn't "wrong" or anything. The "canon" can remain as it may, just consider these "alternate universes" if you will.

Btw, not to diss on any Rogue Spear or R6 fans, but that game really disapointed me. I mean sure it had some elements of "realism" but I got a bit upset with the crappy AI, the slow-moving characters, sluggish controls, lack of a jump button, etc. That and net-play seemed to be rather buggy (at least when I was playing it, version 1.04 was out). The game has its own unique appeal, but as a FPS fan, I just wasn't that pleased.

I like all of these ideas, and someone should find a way to submit them to LEC. I especially liked the one about being a bounty hunter. They could call it "Star Wars: Bounty Hunter(s)." If you were hanging around in a cantina waiting for a job to come knocking, you'd have to concentrate on not being killed in a bar fight or pickpocketed or something else. I like the idea of starting out at the bottom, taking a few low-paying jobs, saving up some credits, and then upgrading your equipment, weapons, armor, ship, etc. Anyone play The Curse of Monkey Island, where in one part you have a ship at sea and you defeat other captains to steal their treasure? It should be like that. The programmers could even let you be in Mos Eisley walking around and have Luke and Ben walk by on the way to the Falcon.

Thnx for all the sugestions, ppl. It's a pity none of us are working for Lucasarts. Maybe I'll go through this thread, gather up the juicy bits, and send them in an email to LEC. Or I'll email them telling them where to find this thread.

So, any more ideas for a Star Wars FPS?

Too bad LEC has stated very clearly that they won't accept outside ideas no matter what. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/frown.gif)
