I've been thinking, and would like to hear other people's opinions on this: Now that JK is almost 3 years old, and with Obi-Wan upon us in a few short months - is the lifespan of JK coming to an end? Personally I think that the stunning SP mode, and the plethora of extra levels and mods out there for both SP and MP has increased the longevity of the game. The fact that I am writing this here is testament to this fact.

I do worry however that the community will begin to dwindle, and online support from people like wireplay.com and the IGZ will wane, with increasing emphasis being placed on the more popular recent releases, like Q3A etc.

What do you think ? Are there enough loyal followers of JK to keep it going over the coming months and years? Or do you see JK dying away?

Just a thought...

Well, I think the JK community will dwindle down to a select few. We'll be around, but we'll be few and far between.

I think that LEC should have made Dedicated servers for ALL their games which have MP. That would have increased the longevity of their games no-end.

Look at X-Wing Alliance - there's about 100 ppl max who play it on the IGZ. Why? Probably cos it needs a monster PC to play it any sense online without 3 seconds of lag...

LEC; Listen up, until you get dedicated servers, your games are going to fade out of memory, unlike Quake, which, with Dedicated servers, has remained a popular game for many years.

I don't think JK is dying... at least not yet. I'm constantly surprised on the zone how many times I play someone who claims to have gotten JK 'just a few days ago'. The IGZ rooms for JK still have as many players on it (during peak times) as they did a year ago. I think that JK has at least a year left before it truly starts to dwindle down....

Or perhaps that's just my wishful thinking. I'll be playing JK until computers can't run it any more.

I think probably a few months after Obi Wan comes out Jedi Knight will probably start to dwindle into nothingness. It will stick around for a while but there is a limit to everything.

If ObiWan sucks the JK community will be extended a little longer.

I wish it was still like it was two years ago when JK.net had all the MP games instead of the IGZ. As for JK's future, it sure wasn't what it was two years ago. Multiplayer is still a blast, but the single player element is practically dead. I've checked all the JK sites I could and ONLY ONE of them was still active and put out news every few weeks. JK has seen better days, thats for sure.

What? You checked all the JK sites you could and only one updates regularly? Did you try: www.massassi.net) (http://www.massassi.net) www.jedilegacy.net) (http://www.jedilegacy.net) www.jedinights.net) (http://www.jedinights.net)
or www.outpostd34.com?) (http://www.outpostd34.com?)

As for the singleplayer element being dead... well, aside from a few add-on levels, it's always been that way (or at least for me; I mastered the SP element w/ all secrets and on hard within 2 months of getting the game). As for not wanting to have to play on the IGZ, massassi.net has some server boards, and every time I check, there's a game or two going.

JK isn't quite on its deathbed, yet.

Unless another game is released to re-spark people's love of SW, Leeman is correct. People will still be around though.

Well, JK seems to still have a following on the MSN Gaming Zone, and a bit with the editing community. Due to the apparent difficulty of ObiWan editing, at least a few may stay to reap the benefits of a diverse mod community among JK, MOTS and DF users.

Other than that, of course it will never be as huge as it once was, but people recognize the games as classics, and honestly, even if ObiWan is everything these games were and more, they will still have at least a few people play them and make mods yet.

Now if a "Jedi Knight Gold" special collector's cd type of enhancement or upgrade or massive patch is released (doubtful) that will surely spark interest in the old game(s). Maybe put in some extra levels, a C/S upgrade, or something to that effect in a bargain package... I can dream can't I? ; )

Or, if a second mission pack is released (even more doubtful), we'd definately see renewed interest.

Jedi Knight needs another patch upgrade. The network code needs to be re-written.

What they should do is convert Jedi Knight and MotS over to a newer engine. Even the slightly dated Half-Life engine would do. With improved graphics and AI, JK could go head-to-head with the latest first person shooters.
