I don't know about "Flying High", but I absolutelly agree with your opinion about "Matrix". On reflection, it's really a piss-poor movie. Good effects, perhaps, but it won't last on as one of the greats. Mediocre acting and an overdone story is all that movie has to offer.

Being John Malkovich is one that really stands out when I think about it, and, well, most of Robin Williams' serious movies...
12 Monkeys... The Usual Suspects... Generally most anything with Brad Pitt and/or Kevin Spacey in it.

Okay, my in no way comprehensive list:

Reservoir Dogs: Cause it's funny. Also, it's got the best film soundtrack ever.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom: Best action movie ever.
All of Me: Why this one? Well, it's an early eighties Steve Martin comedy. I just like it for some reason.
Memento: It's complex, well directed, and about the most intriguing 'puzzle' type movie ever.
Silence of the Lambs: Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster, two great performances - and a great script.
The Big Lebowski: Funniest film ever.
Chinatown: Can't beat it for style.
Hard Boiled: Had to include some Hong Kong action somewhere. John Woo's last HK film, and it's spectacular.
Evil Dead II: Comedy horror. Bruce Campbell is like a live-action cartoon figure.
Twelve Monkeys: There aren't many sci-fi tragedies. This would have to be the best.

Basically anything with Cary Grant in it, he was a kick-ass actor. 'North By Northwest', 'Notorious', 'The Awful Truth', 'Bringing Up Baby', etc. All classics.

'The Big Lebowski', and generally everything else the Coen brothers have made.

'Swingers' and 'Made' - the general sense of details in Favreau's movies are great, and they're hysterically funny.

'Fight Club', although I prefer the book. Pitt and Norton are excellent in it.

hey i like you more than the other guy!!! I love the golden era hollywood flicks, 'His Girl Friday' over 'bringing up baby' any day for me though!

Yup all the coens films have been great, but i gotta go for blood simple for a fave!

Go see 'Vanilla Sky' if you like excellent soundtracks. It's rare to see anybody using music so well in a movie. Also, 'Memento' is excellent.

hhhmmmm of late my fave score has to go to Terence Malik's 'The Thin Red Line'. The score by Hans Zimmer is breath taking.

Thank you, duder, for reminding me of those directors. These lists always get me irritated with myself, because I read others' lists and bang my head saying, "Aaaaarrgh ...how could I forget that one!"

Like Peter Weir, the Coen Brothers have never put out a bad movie. Darnn mentioned "Being John Malkovich", and that, too, is an exceptional film. Planet of the Apes(1968), Moulin Rouge, Chinatown ...all good.

that would be sweet! i love tim burton. But i dont think it would do too well. (if that makes any sense)

a lot of grim fandango is puzzles, so they would have to fill it in a little more, but who knows.

and in a way i agree with mek, the matrix isnt that good of a movie (even though i like it), but i really liked the idea of our world being fake, or that there is another life other then ours.
