I don't like rushing myself, I have always prefered a longer game with more military conflict, but I have no problem with a well executed rush done by somone who doen't always HAVE to rush. Unfortunatly I have noticed 2 things.
First off, in AOK especially I noticed that people who rush don't do anything else. This is unfortunate. A player who never does anything but rush just isn't that much fun to play against.
Second is a major problem. In aok, and unfortunatly it seems even more in Battlegrounds, I found players who would quit if their rush failed. Now to me this is the ultimate low and just a stupid thing to do. What is the point of the game when somone like that is playing? Either they have a successfull rush and the enemy team is screwed, or they get countered, quit, and their own team is screwed. One way or the other the game is just no fun, and that is what it all comes down to, having a fun game.
Now granted, losing isn't a fun thing, and winning is always what you aim for, but to me, if I play a good game and lose, I don't really care :) The only time I get mad about the game is if I just play a horrible game. And that goes for if I play a horrible game but still win too, i get mad at myself for not playing better.
People who rush and then quit care nothing for the game, just getting the big W, and that is the only thing that really ticks me off. BUT as I said before, I have no problem with the occasional well executed rush as a tactic. It is a perfectly sound and workable strategy.
What do you guys think? Is it right to play the game just for the sake of winning, or is having a good time more important?
Winning is good but fun is more important.
We don't play "games" to win, we play them to enjoy ourselves, I think having the fun is more important than actually winning, and if winning is the only thing important to someone playing the game, then it is no fun to play against them :)
Winnin is fun. Losing sucks. Plain and simple I have fun winning. ;)
Im not very good at RTS, so play for fun. 50 days left to losing, no forces? SEND IN THE R2 DROIDS! I play for fun. Ill hide a turret nearby, harry there forces. Ill build a base to die for. But I wont ever, ever rush. Not until I have a sizable ammount of adv aircraft, supported by Royal Guard and Jedi
I agree, quick rushing isnt any fun. Though it is defendable.
How I play could technically be classified as a rush, although Im not quite sure. If I make it to tech 3, build a few strike mechs and send them to your base and find no defence.. should I not keep fighting?
It doesnt nessesarily kill the enemy, I need to wait for heavier weapons in order to take down the buildings.
But like you said in the main post, I am here for fun. I may be fierce in my playing, but I will vary my style. If I see a newbie as my enemy, Ill give them time to build. I'll go and do something I havent done before.. perhaps create a bunch of units I dont often use, or do a tactic I havent tried before.
Its unfortunate that some people will always play like that. At least add some variety.
well, I've super rushed a few people...it's kinda dumb..but hey, atleast you win! I hateit when i play a long 2 hour game, only to be double teamed....that really flames me...grr..
Worst I saw was Fortress rushing. I didnt have LOS to this area, then suddenly started seeing fire being rained on me. Too early for an army enough to take out 5000, I was doomed
Fun is more important and winning is fun, and I'll do whatever it takes to win.
Good post, GL_Raptor.
I think if somebody has the skills to rush me early, he can try. Unless this was a game where we weren't supposed to rush, someone else can try it on me. But I like to play slow and build up my forces. I wanna have fun the most, but I don't wanna get stomped either.
I like to win... but I play games to have FUN
same here, but i always lose..
I play to win but i have fun if i do good. But if somebody turns on me and i lose becuase of them ill get mad. I'm very good at the demo and two people who teamed me to beat me. The was like one loss out of 40. I don't rush that early. I first get my economy up then get a defensable army, ugrade and get into tech 3. From then its rush hell but by then its liek 30 min into the game. Is anybody reasonable in this game. Somebody zone message me at bluewave_2. I need a good partner or somebody that can beat me fair in square.
I think the most important part of the game is having fun, but it is nice to win.
if u constantly think of just winning, the game will soon be boring for u...
one must constantly play the game for the love of the fun, and not just the winning
I normally start off with the idea of having fun. If the game becomes close..especially if it's 2vs1, I do whatever I need to do to win. For instance, in a no monument game I won't take it myself but if someone else touches it I'm fortifying the crap out of it.
I'm pissed off for hours when I loose, so I try to make those experiences rare.
Emo
Personally...I have fun...but when I have a win I have ALOT of fun:D
True on the monument thing. I was playing on Gamespy tonight and my room clearly said NO MONUMENT. Like 15 min into the game, the guy hits the monument. I thought maybe it was an accident but then he left his scout trooper there. I sent over a small army, wiped the trooper, hit tech 3 (he was only at tech 2 through the rest of the game) and made turrents, a fortress, artillary, and just aboot anything else you could think of. He tried one rush, but got smoked by my Airspeeders and my now relativley large army. I do play to have fun, (I lose more then I win :-D), but if someone F's with me, I play to win. If anyone plays on Gamespy, My name is [DsA] The Thrill. Later
OBviously I like to have fun when I play. I always hate playing guys who hate to lose or who play just for the win. There are some guys out there who just go into rooms that are rookies and pound them to smitherines just to get the win. When I first started playing the demo I had a guy that called me pathetic since I was new to all the hot keys and buildings and what does what. I told him it's a new game. He said "So I've played AOC!!! I got skills." Goes to show you people like to gloat even on the newer players.
Anyways I thought I did fairly well considereing it was my first outing. The game lasted over an hour. Of course that was a few weeks ago. Now There are some out there that think I'm pretty good. Still have alot to learn though. HE He!
well i hate ppl that rush all the time, and then quit if they fail...i mean thats just gay, but rushing is ok every once in a while, but not fun all the time,Example: I was rushed by someone with stromtroopers in tech 1, how do you afford all those stormtroopers and afford to adv. to tech 2?
nice thread this is.. (Yoda voice)
Winning is good, but fun is more important.
Rushing was developed by people who wanted to get up on a ladder as fast as possible. It is a strategy based on one thing alone: winning.
Very few people find it really fun. So I'd say in order for all player to truly enjoy a game (win or lose), you shouldn't rush..
Thanks for the compliments of the thread hannibalscipio
and Paragon_Leon. :)
you get your econmy up lol i only rush to see how good my enemy is. If hes good ill back up for a bit and look for a better way to attack.
:x-wing:
Winning is a bonus, it's all about fun!!! ;) :fett:
Well, i'm very commpetative by nature, but in everything thing i do, whether it be video games or tennis or soccer, i play to have FUN. Thats really all that matters. When you get so caught up in winning, you loose your sense of fun.
I never rush, not even in games like RA2 where it is very easy to. I'm defensive by nature as well, which stands true in tennis and AOK and RA2 and Soccer. I bide my time, make up a huge economy, then an army, then attack/counterattack.
Even when buying a game, most of what i think about is whether the game is fun. Graphics and special effects are secondary, and while they help, they don't ultimately decide whether i buy the game or not.
So, i think you can guess where my vote goes. ;)
I agree 99%. Graphics are really important for me, but the game must be fun.
