I have been experimenting with Alpha Channels and Environment maps but everytime the bits I make black just come up transparent.

You need a TXI to tell it to use an env map, and possibly a appearance.2da tweak as well for some clothes/armour.
Im using a txi file including cm_bright and i am texturinng hk47
A look at K1's texture shows that by default it uses the mycube env map, so using a different one shouldn't require anything but a proper TXI. How is it formatted? Like this?
envmaptexture CM_Bright
The envmap entry in appearance.2da is starred out for him though, so maybe you will need to edit that (change it to DEFAULT or CM_Bright).
