I've created a model in gmax and have been trying to edit the textures, i cant find any good tutorials.
Can anyone recommend one?

You can't do any texture editing in GMax. You'll need to use an image editor like Photoshop, Paintshop, GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/), Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net/), etc.

I have gimp, but how would i import a model that i made into gimp?

You don't. You import the texture you make into gmax and "UVW-Map" your model, giving it the skin. Check this out:
