Will there be any options for voice typing in The Old Republic? I've been thinking, with Windows Vista having voice typing capability it would be a great opportunity for MMOs to have the same accessibility. It would be useful for someone that had arthritis or any kind of condition that made typing difficult! To me, it seems like a win/win situation. More players equals more people paying to play. Besides, giving the community more options is never a bad thing. If it was a capability, The Old Republic and LucasArts, would be upping the ante for the industry. I can't think of a better genre than Star Wars to introduce voice typing for gamers with disabilities. What does everyone else think? If it is not possible, why not?
Sorry if this post is in the wrong board! :) Does LucasArts have a link to send suggestions?
First off, welcome to LF, DarkSide85!
I actually think that is a good idea. Lots of typing could easily be a major turn down to people with arthritis, and gamers with other disabilities.
Thanks for the welcome! :)
I hope others think my idea is good too. After watching the youtube video, I thought it would be a great way for the game to stand out.
It could just be a simple word to text window. I don't know anything about coding, though. I'll try to e-mail someone at BioWare, and see what happens. Does anyone know who to e-mail?
There is Dragon Speak Naturally for voice-typing already on the market. :)
I know there is Dragon Naturally Speaking for voice typing, but it only works with certain applications. When someone tries to voice type within a game it wouldn't work. What I'm suggesting is that somehow within the game code for The Old Republic they add a capability to voice type without having to use a certain program. :)

my mom had it. Don't have an accent. Don't have a cold. Don't have anyone in the room. Don't breathe, don't put on music, don't have noise outside. It's a horrible program, it'll even "imagine" sounds and start inserting random words into your writing.
It'd be a pretty cool feature, but I think devising and implementing a voice to type program would be more trouble than its worth. I'd rather have more content and fewer bugs than a groundbreaking but ultimately pointless control interface.
I agree, Bioware needs to make sure they have good content and less bugs in the game. But, if they needed time to implement voice typing it could always be put in a patch. Anyway, I'm sure they have employees that work on the user interface. So, it's not like they would interfere with other work being done by making the game voice-typing capable.
I'd rather have them skip the text altogether and have voice com based on proximity. Might settle down some of the "WTS +5 Lightsaber of Uberness PST with offers" Of course this feature would also have to have a volume and an off switch:D
^In major cities, you would have so many voices calling out, you couldn't tell what anyone was saying.

It would be hilarious for the first 10 minutes, then you'd jump off a building.
As for chat though, I hope they make it easy to use like WoW. Guild Wars chat system is a complete mess and is painful to behold.
And on that note, please! Please have an auction house! Watching trade in Guild Wars was like trying to win money at a casino lottery machine.

Hence the off switch haha
You could set it up for 10M or 5M.
You don't have to hear everyone in the city. Think about it in terms of like New York or even a club scene. within a few meters you can hear it clearly. outside of that it's pretty indistinguishable. Perhaps have it set up so that you have the background murmer...

Personally, I don't really need voice com. Typing is enough for me.
