Lightsaber Issues...

Recently I modeled a new lightsaber for KoToR 1 which admitably may not have been the smartest thing to model for a first attempt...

Here it is in Milkshape before exporting to 3DS and importing into Gmax:
http://wedgeworks.profusehost.net/KotorScreens/LightsaberWIP1thumb.jpg) (http://wedgeworks.profusehost.net/KotorScreens/LightsaberWIP1.jpg)

Here it is ingame (looks good although the textures appear quite dark):
http://wedgeworks.profusehost.net/KotorScreens/LightsaberWIP2thumb.jpg) (http://wedgeworks.profusehost.net/KotorScreens/LightsaberWIP2.jpg)

Now this is the real issue I am having at the moment:
http://wedgeworks.profusehost.net/KotorScreens/LightsaberWIP3thumb.jpg) (http://wedgeworks.profusehost.net/KotorScreens/LightsaberWIP3.jpg)

Despite my character being in his idle pose the Saber appears ignited from the right side, also the energy blade is invisible from behind and the left when ignited. I assume this has something to do with the planes though I can't figure out what so any ideas would be useful.

You've not followed the proper steps to make your lightsaber. Please see this tutorial (http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=143805) for a wonderful walkthrough on how to successful put a lightsaber in-game.

Sorry, it's not as simple as any other kind of item/weapon model. It's why I don't make sabers. :p

Also please check to see if you texture is actually appearing on your model instead of just being 'dark.' I can't tell from your screenshots, but it's possible your UV map has conspired against you. If that's the case you'll probably need to repair it, then make sure you cleave the edges between breaks in your UV map. Smoothing groups won't cut it for KotOR, unfortunately.

I made sure the texure is actually on the model its just really dark.

Using that guide I now have the saber animating correctly although the blade is floating at about a 45 Degree angle...

Did you follow it correctly? Because I can't think right now (pun not intended) of why it would do that.

BTW, using that kind of saber, you should make a Marris Brood style lightsaber :p (not sure on how the animations would work on that one :p)

I've now fixed the problem it turned out that I hadn't aligned the pivot point on the model to the blade.

What you mean like this:
http://wedgeworks.profusehost.net/KotorScreens/MarisSaberWIP2thumb.jpg) (http://wedgeworks.profusehost.net/KotorScreens/MarisSaberWIP2.jpg)
http://wedgeworks.profusehost.net/KotorScreens/MarisSaberWIP1thumb.jpg) (http://wedgeworks.profusehost.net/KotorScreens/MarisSaberWIP1.jpg)
They actually animate quite well considering they are pointed in a different direction than the standard sabers more like an extension of the arm than a saber.

Those are great! When you release the regular saber, include that saber as well~!

I have to agree, the Marris saber looks Really good.

I'd certainly use it, though i hope you'll include other colors than blue

Those are really neat! I know I'd snatch those up if they were up for download... and I noticed them...

I wish I could model something...*sigh*

But, anyway, good job on the Lightsabers.

Yeah I will include other colours it is easier to model using one saber as a template instead of having to extract all of them.

Will do...

At the moment it is for KotOR 1 because I do not own TSL.

I have now made the shaders for the new sabers which has fixed the lighting issue:

Hey, it's good to see you back :). Those are some mighty fine lightsabers you've got there, and I'm glad to see that you're still working on the playable Rodian.

I really like the Maris Brood lightsabers as well as the first saber you created.

Would it be possible to invert one of the Brood sabers, like in the offhand, or would that be too much to ask :)

You know it would be easyer to just stick with 3DS MAX and not use gmax if you already have 3ds. There is a plug-ing for 3DS, Though If I recall it was v7 that had the least number of problems with KotOR models.

Yes, It is so much easyer to just copy and hex edit the original with the other colors. Plus it says alot of time.

At the moment I only have Gmax I should have said "exported to .3DS format"

I came up with another interesting design the saber pike also from The Force Unleashed:
http://wedgeworks.profusehost.net/KotorScreens/SaberPikeWIP1thumb.jpg) (http://wedgeworks.profusehost.net/KotorScreens/SaberPikeWIP1.jpg)http://wedgeworks.profusehost.net/KotorScreens/SaberPikeWIP2thumb.jpg) (http://wedgeworks.profusehost.net/KotorScreens/SaberPikeWIP2.jpg)

As for inverting the Maris sabers for the off hand I tried it but it doesn't look very good ingame his elbow clips the blade alot when he moves :cry8:.

Ya, I made one of those a couple years a ago.

The way the animations work though I couldn't leave the other end with nothing so I added the blade to it.

I think what I will do is release the models first as a simple override where the Saber Pike will replace the all of the double sabers with equivelent colours for those who do not want to worry about mod compatability, though I'm not too sure on what to do with the two saber's (Marris and my Unique one) I might have them alternating (Blue = Mine, Red = Marris, Green = Mine and so on)

Then I will release a version with new lightsaber crystals which allow you to change your current sabers by adding the new crystals.

I have also worked out how to animate the saber blade to make the colour change (Rainbow crystal anyone.:xp:)

Here is a shot of the menu picture for the Saber Pike with Rainbow crystal installed, as you can see it is called the Lightsaber Pike and has an edited description.:

I have also made another unique hilt design not sure if should keep it:

Heh. I remember when a certain member of ExS made a tutorial that explained to us how to make a double colored lightsaber. I played with that tut (Made for K1, works in TSL as well) and made one of those.

I have also made another unique hilt design not sure if should keep it:

Very... err... big.
I say keep it.

That new saber looks like its based on the ion rifle.

You could always call it the Ion Saber.

Based upon the backstory for the Zeison Sha armour in TSL I have been working on a Zeison Sha Discblade:
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/22/zeisonshadiscbladewip.th.jpg) (http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/22/zeisonshadiscbladewip.jpg)

Which will be for KoToR 1 (as it is the only game I have atm)
It is based upon this image:
http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/f/fa/ZeisonSha.JPG)

I shall hide the lightsaber blades as I did with one of the Saberpikes so that it can be thrown in the same manner as a lightsaber the only downside of this will be that it will sound like a lightsaber instead of a sword.
