All I've got is paint, so before I go out and buy Paint Shop Pro Photo X2, or what have you, I'd like to just ask: what do y'all use for your custom head mods?

gimp its free you can download it.

basically any tool that you can cut a picture of a person out of. GIMP and PhotoShop are some examples. Not sure on Paint.

Definitely GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/) or Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net/) if you're looking for the right price (FREE) :D

Providing as many choices as possible would help out much better.

There are several free photoshop programs, such as Photoshop Elements (the most basic, but has the same tools and feel) and Photoshop 7.0, which is just a smaller version then the CS# Photoshops.
Using Elements is an easy way to do it, using the lasso (probably magnetic lasso) and drag around outline of character, drag it (with move tool) to the 128x128 (pixels) and then resize to the good size, and then the background.

I'll try and put it more simply.

If graphics is something you're interested in, and you're willing to invest a bit of cash, Photoshop is the way to go.

You don't need to get a brand spanking new copy of CS3 Extended from Adobe, you can get a fairly new version from eBay for a pretty decent price.

If you don't want to spend money, good free options are the GIMP, or as has been said, Paint.NET.

GIMP is an excellent free option, though i've never tried Paint.NET.

I'm lucky enough to have Photoshop, but if you can't get that, GIMP is highly recommended.

If your looking for something Free, and of decent quality GIMP will do you fine :) Chainz has already provided a link - but in case you missed it http://www.gimp.org/) If this is only for modding I would recommend just using a free thing such as GIMP no sense spending that much money on a hobby. Speaking as someone with CS3 Extended, I have to thoroughly recommend its awesomeness. It is very pricey though; unless you have friends in the right places like my dad ;)

Personally I would strongly recommend against Elements myself, if you can get your hands on Photoshop CS2 - I would suggest that.

Yep.. and more tutorials available for GIMP web-wide. Probably one of the best alternatives for the Free proggiez. :)

If its free fair enough - I wouldn't pay for Elements myself - I have this policy of not buying anything which is a 'basic version' - I think I may also be biased against Elements after the trauma of trying to teach my Gran how to use it :dozey:

Hm... Tbh I use 2 programs: GIMP and Macromedia Flash.
Flash is very good for addind details that you can't with GIMP. With Flash you can also do animations and 2D games.
Actually, I was a Flash animator 'till 2 years ago- it started to bore me greatly!

I prefer Photoshop, but I think portraits can't look really good unless the image is pre-rendered. (http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn97/Personman_photos/po_nikto.png) (Yes, I know that doesn't look great, but it's for my personal use and isn't finished yet)
