No need for DX.

Astro you sound like this guy (

IMO Windows isn't the most widely-used OS because it's the best and DX isn't the most widely-used graphics API because it's the best.
Oh please. for Pete's sake jmac. Again with the obligatory Linux rant ! Why me :( :p
let's recap
maybe in the business market negsun, but gaming wise, its either console or pc.
can you see any other of those OS manufacturers having the resources or gumption to nut out a SDK, particulalry one that is DX10 compliant ?? Absolutely impossible !!
DirectX is a MS trademark as well as being an industry standard. They seem to be the only OS manufacturer that is interested in gaming at all. (Apple definitely isnt...)
Where have I mentioned if windows or DX is "the best"? Is this thread about our opinions on which API is the best. To tell truth, I am not software savvy to say what is ! Im not a gaming programmer.. I really wouldnt know how well written either code was.
All I know is that I like playing a certain group of games, and alot arent playable on any other OS. MS has poured billions into gaming. The billions generated from gaming help fuel the likes of AMD, Intel and nvidia making new tech.
Supply and demand, get that money, dollar dollar bill y'all !
Seriously. Ive missed the joke in that link. I cant even fathom what that evangelical schooling link is about either. Being of Islamic faith, and without kids, I dont think that would apply to me either ;)
Still, is any of that relevant to the OT: MS losing an antitrust case ??
Lolz...Im far from a technophobe and I applaud the efforts of the osource community. In certain contexts, it is superb....servers especially is what comes to mind. Open office too of course is great for schools/students/families on a budget. FFox is awesome of course, and Im sure there are many more examples ;)
If I ever were to have children(most unlikely), I'd be delighted to have the little bugger do his linux thing as long as he builds it himself on a dedicated box, dual boots etc :p It'd be a good learning experience. Still, I'd prefer he play sports and socialise than be a computer geek at such a young age :D (I didnt start building pcs until I was 30)
Gaming however is a such money hungry industry that there is simply no easy way for any open source solution to become a serious contender in any sense.
I dont know why Ive bothered typing that out. The same argument was had in 87, 97, 2007. Open source and high end gaming will never mix. Compatibility layers, workarounds and shady reverse engineering is all it has ever been, and will be for the forseeable future. I can't see any means for this to change as long as the industry is driven by the dollar.
I wish I was software savvy enough to understand why that OSource API is so much better, but even if it is - if its not going to let me play any of my Beloved Bioware RPGs, then it might as well be scrawl on a scrunched up tissue in a whorehouse. value = 0. A curious point of discussion, sure - but that's about it. :)
lolz... if it werent for commercial APIs, I wonder if this forum would exist!? It was founded and revolves around propietary gaming titles :)
Anything that will deprive people of BioWare and LFN must surely be bad, horrible, nasty ! ;)
