K1 - Droids and creature weapons

I've been trying to overcome the problem with a droid character having to fight unarmed in melee combat (because no melee weapons will show up for them to equip) by adding a creature weapon to their Natural Items with KOTOR Tool. However, I can't seem to make the creature weapons take effect, as the character's damage with an unarmed attack is still just 1 point plus Strength modifiers. The character also has a creature hide item equipped on their Natural Items that is working fine and there aren't any problems equipping and saving the creature weapon (it shows up as equipped on the utc file), but it seems like the game just won't read it or something.

I tried using some existing creature weapons (as well as melee weapons and lightsabers) in the slots with all proficiency feats enabled in case there was some problem with my creature weapon uti, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Since the search is down at the moment, I haven't been able to search for any other topics like this, so I skimmed through a few recent pages but I couldn't find anything similar.

The assault droid in the Taris Sith base seems to pull this off somehow but even copying all the proficiencies and creature weapons from that utc doesn't help.

If anyone has a suggestion, or a completely different way to make a droid NPC more effective in melee combat, it'd be appreciated. :)
