Creating sabre in gmax help?

I am following the process of creating a sabre in gmax as outlined in the sabre tut http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=143805) .

I am at the stage of unwrapping it but it doesn't seem to be going as it should.

The sabre is as one object and I am trying to work out how to get the ends in th unwrap properly. The sides unwrap okay but when I select a cylinder with cap the caps dont show the detail.

Also the detail on what to do from there is a bit thin on the ground as I am new to modding and using gmax.

Can some one explain in more detail from were you apply the checkers pattern on wards.

Edit: I've been able to detact the top of the sabre and add it to the unwrap. I need to do the base as well but gmax is not allowing me to do it.

Also how do you import a sabre from KOTOR to gmax. Is there a guide some where around that tells you how to do this?
