I am not a fan of Gimp at all (for now) it's a little more complicated. I haven't found anything like the layer style thing in photoshop yet which renders a few of my items useless (i.e. the bubble shield, lightsaber blades...)

Anyways, I circled the spots I'd use the most were i to use gimp until i found better methods.
i'll keep messing around with it though
07-20-2008, 11:18 PM
Ok, I'm still messing around with it.

[edit] Ok, I sure do hope that I'm not asking a big favor but I could really use a screenshot of editing the helmet step by step with numbers in the order you did it. I would like to ad a black stripe down the center like the commando (boss I believe) in my sig.
07-20-2008, 11:32 PM
Okay so I started on an EOD, but it was an older version, it wasn't used in the game...
07-20-2008, 11:33 PM
Hey man whats up?

question: Do you guys stay up all night making commandos?

Hey man whats up?

question: Do you guys stay up all night making commandos?

To answer the question. I guess it depends on where we live. I tend to spend my nights making these and the days doing everything else.

I'll try to make a step by step tutorial for you, but the program is a lot trickier than i thought it would be.

anyways, i took the saved file of Chaf'orm and did it with gimp (basically all the coloring disappeared because i used the layer style option in photoshop) compare with
i had to apply alternative methods explaining why the saber glow is cut off in a few spots
07-20-2008, 11:47 PM
Thanks alot. Anyway... I'm gonna turn in, so talk to you tomorrow.

Actually now that I think about it, I have to help out with my churches summer camp so I will not be able to get on much for about a week. And definitely not work on my commando. If you can have it ready in the morning I just mite be able to get some work done.
07-21-2008, 12:07 AM
I'm going to be gone for awhile, because I'll be learning 3D animation on Blender, see ya guys later :wavey:
07-21-2008, 12:10 AM
question: Do you guys stay up all night making commandos?
Depends. I almost always do mine around 2:00 PM cuz im not doing anything. It might be earlier if the Halo 3 noob owning isn't going well. :xp:

Alright, I finally finished. Everything written can be useful (except the made by me part) so take your time going through it. It is just a jpg image so anyone can open it. TUTORIAL (pretty general but made for GIMP) ( The icons and stuff will be a little different in a different program and you may be able to skip some steps (i.e. Photoshop automatically creates a new layer when you paste) but all in all it should work for any photoshopish program.

Adjusting the brightness can affect coloring both before and after the Color Balance function is used. Play with that too. I'm going to sleep now, but i'll try to keep making these to cover all the basics (next time I wont use the Halo font so it's easier to read). Da_man, if you can do this too, it'd be greatly appreciated

Couldn't sleep so i did Tutorial 2 ( since it was mainly picture changes. (First tutorial is B&W this is color)
07-21-2008, 2:00 AM
I'll see if I can write a GIMP tutroial, if thats what you want. :xp:

07-21-2008, 2:13 AM
Ok, since I already have 2 and my Sidebar seems to be filling up with "stuff" i made a link to a new page that lists tutorials:

Also, before I go to sleep tonight, I intend on making a page that lists the old Packages instead of all of them on the sidebar as they are.
Ok, Here is the page:

if you go there, you might find a new package. if you've downloaded the last one, there's really no need. I renamed Mark IV to VI, and added the EOD, the straps, the visor crack, and a new black sniper model because i never liked the one that's been used forever. I also included the 2 tutorials i made.

the new black model is this: or should i call him Shadow Knight
07-21-2008, 6:11 AM
Thank you so much! I'm gonna get on it right awy.

07-21-2008, 4:28 PM
Thanks, for all of the tutorials for GIMP ;) Now just to get GIMP and use it...but I like Photoshop better
07-21-2008, 5:32 PM
These turorials are awsome. I love this thread! Tried recoloring a saber in one of my screenshots... awsome! I'm gonna' try this with the commando models.

EDIT: Gimp users, is there any way to hide the back layers in GIMP?
07-21-2008, 6:34 PM
^: The way I do it is just hiding the layer in question behind the background layer.
07-21-2008, 6:46 PM
Yeah. I realized you can do that now... thnks. This is cool! I figured out some of the lightsaber stuff!
07-21-2008, 7:39 PM
Ok, i'm having a problem with keep the lasso tool sharp. Is there a easier way to guide it?
07-21-2008, 7:46 PM
for what? Gimp or Photoshop?
07-21-2008, 7:56 PM
With gimp you can use the Scissor Select Tool, and it will (most of the time) find the edge you want.

I don't know what the Photoshop equivalent is.
07-21-2008, 9:48 PM
Well, there's the wand, but I'd prefer the Polygon Lasso tool...on photoshop
 General LiWar
07-22-2008, 2:42 AM
In photoshop i do the lasso unless i need a straight edge, then i use the polygon tool, although often time, i just make the selection bigger and erase until i get a straight looking edge. I haven't found a tool that does straight lines in Gimp

Anyways, Tutorial 4 (making the visor black) (

I'm planning on doing a lightsaber tutorial next also, an alternate method of coloring. let me know what you want to learn and i'll try to make a tutorial for it.
07-22-2008, 11:47 AM
Nice Tutorials...
07-23-2008, 1:12 PM

Alright then, I guess I'll do prism, but it's going to take a while, i'm in the process of editing a little film project me and my friends made.
07-24-2008, 3:59 PM
Cool! My friend wants to make a video, but I'm no actor...

Liwar did my sig, Ner Vod, I can do it, now, but he made mine, ask him ;)

07-24-2008, 11:45 PM
Nice work guys

hey mars how did u gt ur sig like that?
I'll do one for you if you tell me what you want, but if you have a program like GIMP or Photoshop, download the package on my site, i put a file in there to make your own sig similar to M@rs's. Private Message me if you want me to make it.

P.S. I put the movie work aside for a little and i'm working on Prisma. Hopefully I'll be able to post it tonight
 Lt Wolf
07-25-2008, 12:05 AM
Hey Liwar, I have a challenge for ya- Could you make a model that looks like he has a halo sniper rifle across his back? That would be sweet!
 General LiWar
07-25-2008, 12:08 AM
Prisma:;init:.jpg) (

I'll see what i can do, Darman

How's this (I also added an SMG which is in the add on package) and I made an assault rifle pic (not in this package);init:.jpg) (;init:.jpg) (

Add-on Package 1 ( i only uploaded it because i made things like the arm shield/electricity GIMP friendly. (in other words the effects became permanent instead of Layer Style effects) (If you need to change the colors follow Tutorial 3 on color changing ( (the arm shield still isn't perfect in GIMP, but it's better than having a white seems like setting it to "Hard Light" or "Grain Merge" at 100% opacity makes it most like what i had in photoshop. "Screen" at 100% or just set at like 87% opacity also look decent);init:.jpg) (
07-25-2008, 12:51 PM
Wow, Prisma's, colorful. It looks AWESOME! Did you add a texture to some of the colors? It looks like you did...and thanks for the new commandos I'll get one whipped up with the assault rifle...
 General LiWar
07-25-2008, 12:59 PM
It was a custom gradient i stumbled upon in the various preloaded styles.
07-25-2008, 1:20 PM
Hmm, is it for Photoshop or GIMP? Probably Photoshop, but I still want to be sure :)
 General LiWar
07-25-2008, 1:24 PM
yeah photoshop... it's called "angled spectrum" in the "buttons" option of the "style" tab. I just removed the shadow and bevel and made it overlay and slightly adjusted the colors

I still use photoshop for all clone customizations (it's a lot more user friendly). I just play around with GIMP so I can help anyone using it.
 Lt Wolf
07-25-2008, 2:07 PM
Dude, thats BOMB! And the new pack is sweet.(Maybe it IS Christmas..)

Also, thanks for the GIMP Guides. They've helped me a lot. By the way, when you say "screen" at 87% op, do you mean layer settings?
 General LiWar
07-25-2008, 5:55 PM
yes, use the layer settings
07-25-2008, 6:37 PM
Okie Dokie :D and I just finished this Commando...
07-25-2008, 11:07 PM
thanks m@rs thats awesome its cool that u moved the skull
07-25-2008, 11:46 PM
Finally I'm back from one "chaotic" week at camp. Trying to teach 6-7 year olds how to play soccer is awful...

Maybe now I can settle down and gets some more work done.

Pfft... I had to teach my spoiled-rotten, retarded, fat, 7-year-old cousin who to get thorugh the first level of Lego Star Wars. And that's all we did for a week.
07-26-2008, 12:08 AM
hey gys u know that thing under my name that says "lurker" well wat is that and how do i change it
 General LiWar
07-26-2008, 12:16 AM
It's your status with lucas forums. it changes periodically, i think at 10 it becomes Rookie, at 250 Junior Member, at 500 Forumite, and 750 veteran, at 1000 you can pick. I'm not sure if that's perfect for the numbers but it should be close.

As for your sig picture, did you want the same font colors?

and do you want the click here part?
