f you take the time, you can see these optical phenomena quite often during the winter months, especially when the sun is lower in the sky. If cirrus clouds are present bright, colored spots may appear to the left, right or both sides of the sun. The technical term for a sundog is "parhelion" from the Greek meaning "beside the sun." The next time you're outside, look up. If the weather's dry and cirrus clouds are in the sky, you may be in for a real treat!
