No Modding Tools Ever?

Will there ever be any modding tools? I was reading the Liscense Agreement, and it says You may Not: (6) Design or Distribute Unauthorized Levels

Does that mean they will not let anybody mod?

I believe the current rumor is that there will be a mod kit and that it will be fully supported by the developers this time. However at the moment I believe it's only a rumor. The license agreament may be suggeting however that you can not distribute for profit, I find it kinda strange that developers of SWBF2, being it is a FPS would go out of their way to make it difficult for the game to succeed by saying only authentic maps or models etc can be used, especially as most of the servers ( if not all ) are privately run by the community, not to mention they certainly allowed modding and mapping for SWBF1. There are already mods out there for SWBF2 and no one has been hauled of by the FBI yet, so I wouldn't be overly concerned.

I authorize any levels I download. I don't want 'spyware 'to track levels I download and start downloading similar levels without my knowledge.

Gee THAT sucks! So modding is officially not allowed (at least new levels)... unless they're "authorized" meaning an official expansion pack or mod pack is probably all we'd ever see.

I hope they change that otherwise they're really shooting themselves in the foot. Why allow it for SWBF1, but not 2? Do they have something special planned?

The only mods I've seen so far are the hex edited variety.

Ouch... LucasArts!

I guess this is maybe to make the console gamers feel less left out, since free mods is always a major draw for the PC side. Bummer...

As far as being "authorized" I assume they mean each mod maker has to run it by Pandemic/LucasArts to get their permission first. That's extremely lame. And recall that Lucas lawyers have in the past successfully shut people down or got them to C&D with stuff. All they have to do is target some major mod site and boom... "problem solved." Hard to get your mod noticed if nobody can download it.

There's only one solution: we demand a mass boycott of Lucasarts things until they release mod tools for the PC.

They'll probably respond by going "see? I told you the console market was where the money was!" and continue to churn out crap. ;P

Still, it's as good an idea as any!

There's no excuse to make SWBF1 and 2 single player games for the console and say screw everyone else, which is so far what they've been doing.

The license agreement is the same as you find in SWBF1 so donґt care.
And LA needs to release a patch first supporting addon maps before releasing tools.

Well if they're not going to allow modding, they darn well better release a decent patch and some free addons to make up for it. C'mon, don't they know what PC gamers have come to expect nowadays? They can't just expect us to be happy with minimal support at this stage...

The latest ::

The patch should be completed in about a week. BUT, it has to go through testing and may or may not be bundled with a LEVEL EDITOR application. It will depend on when the LEVEL EDITOR is complete.

So, don't expect it next week. This patch addresses the dual core CPU issue along with other technical bugs, but may include some gameplay and user interface fixes. Don't expect any new levels, weapons or characters, etc., in this patch.

-k

Where did you hear this/how do you know this, out of curiosity?

Does your source know if this is the only patch, or will others follow it?

Well I need some type of Software Engineering internship/co-op for the summer-winter quarters. Where do I sign up?

Edit: I was going to ask another question, but Kurgan beat me to it and how I didn't see his post 30min before mine...

He got it from a reliable source. I too have received this information. As to their being another patch, it's very likely. The merger with Bioware has given Pandemic a great deal of new resources and the good word is that they are intent on making this game a success. As for modding, they will be actively seeking to get the community active in the mod department, in an attempt to increase the games popularity and longevity. Hope this makes some of the doubters cheer up a little. :noel: Merry Christamas.

I see the post in the LucasArts Forums (posted by a moderator on Jan 16th) and they said "by the end of January." Mod tools AND a patch. So that pretty much confirms that mod making will be allowed... thanks LucasArts, you had me scared for almost 3 months there... ;P

And no one ever said the patch or mod tolls would be released in January, only that they might be released if they didn't run into any problems (which they did according to the latest annoucment). The next possible release dates are the middle of this week for the patch, and whenever its done for the mod tools. Mod tools has always been said to be released sometime after the patch, a date has never been given.

I say patience. They mod tools are taking a long time to make sure that they are fully supported, unlike those for Battlefront I.

They were clear about "by the end of the month" (which would be January, since the announcement was made IN January!) and "by the middle of next week" which would have been February 8th, because a week is seven days, so the fourth day (sun, mon, tues, WED!) is the "middle day" when you're looking at a calendar.

I don't see why people are so upset in stating that "they never gave a specific date" as if they are correcting people.

If I tell you I'll give you something "tomorrow" and today is Sunday, then you'll assume I mean Monday. And then when I don't do so and then say "but I never said Monday" would you take that as a valid excuse? C'mon now, that's just silly. The only way to get around that and still be honest is to say you forgot what day it was when you made the statement.

It's one thing to say that programming is hard and time consuming and making estimates about release dates isn't an exact science, but really. On the LucasArts forums people are using that excuse over and over to bash anyone who says "where's the patch"? On or after the day that the moderators posted when the patch would be arriving. They didn't even give an announcement after the first delay, so we have no idea what's going on. So people can hardly be faulted for asking.

It's Sunday. It's the end of the week (they said middle of the week). No announcement. They're late, so it's a fact. End of story.

More of the bashing is aganist the people stating things like its the 11th at 12:01am here and the patch isn't out (delete 7 swear words). They said it would come out on the 11th. Lets sue those (more swear words).

Some people over there are getting really mad. These forums are much nicer.

i say if they release tools we should consider that particular statement null and void (i've always wanted to say that) and it seems we should be thankful we seem to have some sorta jedi force field protection thing over this forum

Which statement should become null and void? I didn't quite get your meaning...

Releasing mod tools alone won't make this game great, what we need is a serious bug/exploit fix & stability patch as well.

Im new here, but have seen this time and time again. Just keep hitting F5 every half a second for a week and the tools will be here.. I see alot of people getting their panties in a bunch over the speculation of the patch, which personally, I don't think there's much in the patch myself, havent seen a changelog, if someone has a link please let me know, I think the patch is probably for the MOD tools, and probably a Keygen countermeasure to keep the pirates out... That being said, there is no reason to doubt were gonna get the tools, everyones late delivering these in any game i've played to date except mayb Tribes2...

And that little disclaimer as far as levels, i dont see what the use of MOD tools would be if you couldn't design levels.. Also, if theres strong enough mod support here anyways, people can find out how to open the files and do it the hard way... I'm a big Battlefield series fan, and Call of duty, I just retired as platoon leader and admin of a community cuase COD2 sucks butt, and strangely, oddly enough have been completely taken in by this game.. Yes I did try the first one, but it wasn't NEARLY as polished as the second one is... I never thought i'd wind up spending this much time with a starwars game.. I'm even thinkning about joining a battlefront community and scrimming!! Anyways, I don't know much about this game, does anyone know what game engine is running Bfront 2?? I'm curious, cause it runs extremely smooth with high detail, and doesn't hog resources.. This is usually a sign of very clean codewriting, and a good intelligent start in the beginning.... I'm interested in seeing a battlefield type MOD for this engine, or some other military type MOD, for the pure fact that it is such a good game engine..

OK, i guess im not new here..LoL Sometimes i sign up for a forum and a couple years down the road i forget...LoL Been a while...

The v1.1 server is out, so hopefully the patch will follow. The mod tools are expected after the patch, so it looks likes things are starting to move along.
