Are there any books out that are set around the time of Kotor and TSL........or even before.............well, anything appart from being set around the 6 films ? ?

Short answer, yes. There are many books that do not take place in the time of the films.

There are no novels, but the games use a lot story and setting information from the old Tales of the Jedi comic series. For starters...
