Or, for that matter, Neverwinter Nights. I've had this problem since I installed service pack 2 for XP (Yeah, I know...).
Every time I click on "game" it crashes to desktop and sends microsoft an error report. I can update fine, I can change the configuration fine. I've even tried upgrading my video card, but even brand-new drivers don't help. It's the exact same thing for all three games, and what I want to know is, does anyone know of this problem? Is there a work-around? I'm going through withdrawl here... :)
Make sure you have the firewall turned off.
Yeah, sorry about that. Comp specs:

ahh, gotcha. the main problem lies with the drivers for the Bink movie player. you'll need two things: WinZip and the latest video drivers from ATI.
now, open the driver .exe file in WinZip. scroll down until you find the "binkw32.dl_" file. double-click on it. a new window should open up, allowing you to extract "binkw32.dll". extract it to your NWN, swkotor, and swkotor2 directories. if it asks you to overwrite an existing file, go right ahead.
that should fix the problem. if it doesn't, try disabling movies in your 'Configuration' settings.
hope that helps. :)
Well, winzip wouldn't let me open the newest driver files from ATI, it's a self-extracting .exe but neither winzip nor winrar could access it. So I tried copying some of the other binkw32.dll's from games that DO work, and those all cause the exact same error as what was already there.
All the .dll download sites I've found online have older versions of the file as well. Sigh, will try turning off movies, but that's a little ridiculous...
Thanks for the help!
edit: open WinZip first. then open the file straight from WinZip. this should work as i've done this countless times in the past.
tried that, I might need to update my winzip version. Also, disabling the movies doesn't help - still generates the exact same error message.
What bakes my noodle is, I had this problem with my old nVidea GeForce FX 5200 as well, updating my video card didn't seem to help. And these three games are the ONLY ones that don't work. Civ3 still works, Vampire: Bloodlines works fine, everything with a binkw32.dll works fine except all the ones built on the NWN engine...
I'll try updating winzip (I'm still using 8.0), and try extracting that file again.
Thanks!
it should've worked with your GeForce FX 5200, that's what I'm using to play the games and it works fine...
you may need to remove the games then make sure you have all the vid. updates in place, then re-install the games... I had a similar problem and thats what LA tech told me to do and it worked... may work for you too...
I haven't actually tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling the games yet, though I did try everything else suggested here. So far nothing seems to help. I did try reinstalling Neverwinter Nights at one point (didn't test until I'd installed the second expansion though), and that didn't help any.
I'm wondering if something else I put in caused it to mess up? It didn't begin right after the XP service pack 2 install (I know I played KOTOR2 after that), so does anyone know of anything else that causes conflicts? Media players, other games, etc?
Thanks again!
Were there any other programs installed around the time of the crashes?
i had this problem i did a drive scan fix and it fixed it
