See the thread title. That's all the error message tells me- that default.cfg cannot be found. I've reinstalled the game several times, but nothing's changed. I cannot access single or multi-player; the game locks up on the loading screen, or on the main menu screen, depending on whether or not I start it in safe mode.

Have you tried the 1.01 patch?

Have you tried the 1.01 patch?

My game disc says it is version 1.01.

Open the console and look at the lower right. If it says 1.00 then its retail. If it says 1.01 then its patched. The game disc will not tell you whether the game is 1.00 or 1.01

The console says that my game is version 1.0.1.0 ... just like my game disc has "v1.01" printed on it. ;)

That's pretty amazing. Where did you get it out of curiosity? My discs don't have any version numbers printed on them. As far as I know you just buy the game and it's 1.00. You have to patch it to get 1.01, they don't sell it already patched.

If you're using a dodgy bootlegged version that might account for your problems...

Yeah no game in the world will come with a patch, it will only be in its retail version. Unless its an expansion pack then the developers may add in the latest patches. If your disk says its 1.01 then its 100% pirate like what Kurgan said.

Well sometimes games do come with patches (a few games that have screwed up at press time, been delayed and then just stuffed the patch into the box with the retail game on release; also the "Game of the Year Edition" or "Gold" edition of a few major titles) but I've never heard of a Raven or recent LucasArts game like that, certainly not Jedi Academy.

A bootleg version? Oh, that's just peachy...

Where'd you get it? From a guy with a long trench coat, dark glasses and big hat in a dark alley and lots of jewel cases hanging inside the pockets?

Or maybe it's a non-Windows version?

I bought it used from a local video game store. All the other used games I've gotten there have been legit (and hard to find!)- I guess I got unlucky this time.

I'll try installing the 1.01 patch and see if that doesn't help.

As far as I know, retail copies of JA have been 1.01 for some time, so it is very possible he has a legitimate (but defective) retail copy. Maybe the reason someone traded it in was because that copy is defective. Try to trade it in for another copy where you got it.

That's what I'm planning on doing.

And FYI, I checked my legitimate copy of Starcraft, and it is v1.05 right on install.

Okay, now it gets weird. It is not a bootleg copy at all, right?

Furthermore, when I take it back to the store where I got it, they test it, and... it works. Even though the console has the same error, they managed to load the start screen, make a character, and get through the opening cinematic (they Alt+F4'd before actual gameplay started).

So, now I'm REALLY confused. The computer they were using, by their own admission, is several years older than mine, and inferior in every way. So why does it work on their computer, but not mine?

Well, I'll try installing it via my DVD-ROM drive, but I've been able to install other games just fine...

I tried installing it again using both my drives, and neither worked. I also tried installing to different paths, to no avail.

I've been out of town for a while, but the error is still there. I've decided to post the whole damn message, see if you guys can't find something I'm missing...
