Your not alone in thinking this - I first bought Xwing way back in 93, not strange in itself, but I was so impressed with the game reviews that I bought it before I bought my pc!
I love the games mix of near perfect mission structure and sheer playability combined with its complexity - any game that relies on fast reflex's and uses every key on your keyboard and STILL keeps you hooked is alright in my books.
Unfortunatly, after the xwing mission packs, Tie fighter, xwing vs tie fighter and xwing alliance, lucasarts seem to have given up on the series and in a fit of desperation, I picked up a copy of starfighter which I found to be the biggest load of codswallop and definitely not worthy of the series as it seems to be aimed at the console user.
Can anyone tell me if either Xwing, Tie fighter or xwing vs tie fighter, can be made to run on a windows 2000 powered pc?
I'v had no luck getting any of the above to run and would definitley love to give Tie Fighter a go as I deem it to be the best game in the series.

As I've said elsewhere, Windows 2000 was never meant to be a gaming platform. You're probably better off upgrading to Windows XP and getting the X-Wing Collectors' Series or X-Wing Trilogy (as I don't know if X-Wing 95 or TIE Fighter 95 can be had separately) and XvT, as these will most certainly run on XP in "Compatibility Mode" (right-click on the game's executable in either My Computer or Windows Explorer, choose "Properties", then go to the "Compatibility" tab and set it for Win 95/98).

X-Wing Alliance works great in XP. The other titles are a real pain to run in anything but 98 or less. They don't recognize D3D sometimes, and other issues.

As its been over two years since I last played and completed a lucasarts space combat game, (x wing alliance) and as it seems that they are no longer making these games for the pc, I decided to give x wing alliance a spin again - I would have loved to try Tie Fighter or the earlier titles but they're not compatiable with w2000k pro.
What a great game! - I forgot how good it is and considering its age, really looks and sounds the bizz, but I do have one bugbear - I've played and completed this title quite a few times but don't relish the thought of playing those same missions over and over again - are there any patches/mods available to add a coat of gloss to a classic title?

Plenty, chief among them being the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade Project (http://www.xwaupgrade.com), which aims to mod the game by introducing enhanced resolution models. There is also a TIE Fighter Total Conversion (http://www.tiefightertc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/) available, as well as *gasp* a Wing Commander total conversion that is in the works.

Best place to ask about any available mods is to pay a visit to the X-Wing Legacy (http://forums.xwlegacy.net) message board, where many modders can be found posting.

But I'll say it again, antares...upgrade to Windows XP and you'll be able to run the Windows 95 versions of X-Wing and TIE Fighter, as well as XvT, in "Compatibility Mode". ;)

Thanks for the info wildstar - I'm downloading the indicated files right now and'll let you know how I get on.
As for XP, I will upgrade but not for the time being - I'v been using w2000k for the past two years and have to admit to being extremely pleased with its performance - as much as I miss tie fighter and the other titles, I think that changing from one expensive os to another even more expensive one seems a slight case of overkill, what I'll be doing instead is rigging up one of my two computers with win98 and using it for older titles.

Barring upgrading to WinXP, keep in mind the following points when trying to play XW95, TIE95, and XvT on Win2K:

**Make sure you have the latest Win2K service pack (#4), all of your drivers updated, and that you have the latest DirectX before trying to run XW95, TIE95, and XvT.

**Try disabling your 3D accelerator (Direct3D) when running these games.

**If you have at least Service Pack 2, there is a Windows 95 Compatibility Mode available. Find the game's executable in either My Computer or Windows Explorer, right-click it, choose "Properties", click the "Compatibility" tab, and choose "Windows 95". If you don't see the "Compatibility" tab, you may need to enable it manually. See this page (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;279792) for details on how to do this.

Let me know how this works. :)

I downloaded the mods from the xwing alliance upgrade project and have to say that I'm very impressed with the newly 'rejigged' graphics - they inject a new leash of life into an outstanding game.
My next step is to start searching for some new missions - that is, if there are any available?
Thanks for the info people.

Abolisher's Mission Command Outpost (http://abolisher.xwlegacy.net) is a good place to start for missions. Granted, they're on the Empire's side, but Emperor's Hammer (http://www.emperorshammer.net) has a wealth of XWA missions...downside is that you need to be a member to access them. The Rebel Squadrons (http://www.rebelsquadrons.org), Emperor's Hammer's Rebel-minded sister organization, may also have XWA missions, but again, you have to be a member.

You might also think about getting the registered version of AlliED (http://www.troyed.com/x-wing/DAllied.html), Troy Dangerfield's exellent XWA mission editor...it can convert missions made for the older games (especially XvT).

You probably should direct all future XWA questions to the XWingAlliance.net forum, as we've gone way off topic here.

Since when do we talk about XWA at XWA.net? ;)
