In the last game, there was no CD key so any fool could just download the game and play even multiplayer. I bought the game and this confused me.

Anyone know?

Well technically, JK2 had a cd check, or else the pirates wouldn't have needed to "crack" it in the first place. JA will probably have at least the same.

Myself and many others are hoping for a Q3 style keyserver, but I am also somewhat doubtful. ; p

some stores get games early, but they aren't allowed to shelve it until release date that is agreed by publisher.

Maybe he's trying to say indirectly he has the illegal version? Anyway, I applaud lucasarts decision not to have cd-cracks, don't get me wrong its just that why waste additional resources imbuing cds with anti-piracy measures? The pirates always find a way around it...:(

I heard that the actual game comes with a jedi action figure, maybe this will persuade people to buy the retail version?

-While I agree that pirates will find the way around ANY game, I do think that a CD key would have been a good idea. I've seen game cracks, and not everyone has what it takes to get past even a mediocre CD crack. You can cite all those worthless game packages and cracks floating around [deleted]. But on the other side yes, there WILL be a successful game crack. However, it will be harder to complete and will not be as available. Besides, if just ONE pirate goes out and buys the game verses cracking it, isn't the CD key system worth it? Those of you saying it takes "too much time/energy/money to implement" honestly sound like you're hoping it dosen't have one so you can crack it. However, I am not accusing anyone. Those are just my two cents.
-As for the man who claimed the Wal-Mart put JA out early, all I have to say is this: If I found MY game store (ANY store) putting JA out early, NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING, could stop me from hauling home, grabbing my cash, and buying that game. Can you imagine..."Hey, Jason, I got JA already!" "What, how?" And then showing him that you are the ONLY person you know with JA? And so early, to boot...

Bah, there's a huge difference between a "cd key" and a keyserver.

The former is eventually cracked and keygenerators are distributed by warez groups.

The latter can't be cracked in any realistic way, except by hacking the company's server (while a company might overlook somebody playing a copy of their game for free, hacking their servers is definately something they will be pissed about!).

Since they have the power to issue new keys and cancel any one they choose, this is an effective method of "persuasion" to get pirates to buy their games.

Take Q3 for example (until they "opened" the keyserver so any key would work, after the game had been out a few years), it worked great. Without a valid key a person could only play offline or on a LAN. So they'd have to pay for internet play.

As I recall, Jedi Knight II had no protection whatsoever. The only thing people needed was a No-CD patch. The game would play 100% fine with a copied disc in the drive. So some of the pirate folks and even some legit people used the No-CD crack. I think its silly to make folks to put the cd in the drive just to play. It was a good idea before cd burners became mainstream, but those days are obviously over.

And just because I dont feel like being banned, I was one who bought the game and used the crack so I didnt have to keep the cd handy.

So there's a chance that not only am I getting a free lightsaber keychain but maybe an action figure in the box?

That'd certainly be cool. The option of getting a "collector's tin" with a glowy keychain was nice, but an action figure would be better.

What would it be I wonder? Kyle? Jaden Korr with Barbie Doll style accesories? ; )

Anyway, yeah, the keyserver feature is built right into the Q3 engine, so I don't see why they can't implement it. Have LA foot the bill for running the server.... if they are serious about converting pirates.

Though, for all we know there is some legal nonesense that prevents them from doing it. My theory with JK2 was that Micro$oft wanted to make it dumbed down for people on the MSN Gaming Zone and so they left that part out. But that's just a wild guess...

And they had a big sign saying something like this: "Sorry, but we aren't allowed to sell these yet. Wait until [release date]" :p Heh, pissed a lot of people off :D

-I heard we were getting a liscense-plate cover as the "special gift" and that it read "Graduate of the Jedi Academy...With Honors." To be blunt, I just don't want that. Heck, I've also heard that the only way to get the game is to buy it that day from a sore, because the preorders will be a day late due to shipping something-or-other. Any light to spread here?
-Wow...Three weeks early. Wow. Either that manager had a bad day and wanted to make a few people suffer (As Calvin says, "there's nothing like spreading a bad mood" or something like that) or just made an honest mistake. I'll go with the honest mistake, but that still had to really hurt.
