Making Grim Fandango 2

allright everybody, i know im new here but i just had a golden idea!

why dont WE make GF2???

we do it like in small steps, making a plan, a story, which WE as a community approve. that way there wont be a crappy story, as the people make it!

i prose we start with a story, a general storyline without the dialogue, when thats finished the acts (years) of the game and locations. then add characters and puzzles and dialogue.

one step at a time, not continuing until the last part is PERFECT and everybody agrees with it. when that is done, the story and dialogue is finished we could even try to convince lucasarts to make the game!

----------------------------
my suggestions about the game:
a return of glottis, not as a main character but rather as a npc which you visit. perhaps he has his own garage now?

NO manny..hes gone..

-----------------------------
or is my idea bullsh*t???:manny:

allright lets see if i can think up a story here..

you are..Sonny Caliente (hot sonny  )

You are a gangster in rubacava, it has been 50 years since the discovery of the DoD plot and people got angry and plundered DoD offices every where. The DoD boat has been captured by mobsters ( maximino perhaps, or his succesor) who control most of rubacava.
one day you get accused stealing from the family and you need to escape and prove your innocence to maximino(or his succesor)..

a little about rubacava
the boat is more of a floating house then a boat nowadays, as it doesnt sail anymore, and its an gambling house. mannys old casino is a club for snobs..no more gambling, just a bar. the blue casktet stays the blue casket, albeit with a few changes. the high roller lounge is also still there, now with a direct view on the tracks (like a balcony).

suggestions?

I would like to (I could programme) but we would get a "Cease and Decist" thing from LucasArts because it is illegal.

well basicly we make a plan, a story and present it to lucasarts..or else we make a non commercial mod

Non-commercial mods and fan games have been shut down by LucasArts in the past - in fact, one of them might have been a Grim Fandango related one.

I personally dislike the idea of a fan version anyway. Not to be mean or anything, but most of us lack the time and ability to make anything worthwhile related to Grim Fandango. Games take a huge, paid team and many months/years to complete games for a reason y'know ;)

Actually , I am waiting for really Grim Fandango 2. Maybe prequel , maybe sequel , that doesn't matter, I'm waiting :). But Max idea is good . If somebody has imagination ,he 'll create a interesting game ;).

The other alternative is to make a computer game that closely resembles Grim Fandango... say like something based on the Nightlight radio series 'Tierra de los Muertos' ;)

I didn't get a cease and desist order from LucasArts about that radio series. Probably because I didn't use the title or any of the characters from Grim Fandango. I'd make the game myself, but I lack the programming knowledge.

I am going to learn C++ and maybe LUA. When I do, I might try to do a quick Grim Fandango attempt.

And btw, I saw this person who was trying to make a GF2. And he released a demo. You could walk round with this 3D guy and it actually was quite good. But he got a cease and decist letter. I have the demo on my site though.

Hello everybody, so ...or 8 of 12 ;)
I had the same idea, and I want to ask you if I could use some ideas from "Tierra de los Muertos"

I just can modelling with 3dsMAX and here some pics from my favorite 3dsmax forum.de
I donґt have my own server so I hope the Admin donґt kill me.

I try to build the HQ of the LSA, and try also some animation on my Salvador. It isnґt easy and Iґam not very good soo... ;)

I have a dream, that you 8 of 12 could do all the audio stuff for the characters, because till now I have to use the ingame voices ;)
But this just a dream =)

I would like to make a "Tierra de los Muertos" very much, but someone have to make the 3d engine =)
A new world, a new entviroment. If you have ideas for some places, I would like to model this things, no for a new Game maybe, but for a little trailer or Movie. Think about it.

Here my beta LSA, there are shots from many states of my work so dont mind some bugs.
And the avi files, are tests too!
And I know he just stays on one place ;)
Character animationm, and mouth animation is pretty difficult for a noob like me.

( links gone for webspace reason ;)

So 8 of 12 what do you think about a 3d Tierra de los Muertos.
I would be pleased if I can use some of the settings in there, just need some ideas =)

Dude. That is ****ing amazing! And the obscenity isn't gratuitous in the slightest.

It would be an absolutely fantastic idea to make a short game or something based on Tierra de los Muertos.

This is just this room so far...
Its pretty many work to make somthing so exaklty like in the game.
If you have your own idea its more easier.

There are many "bugs"
The last version (with all the fog in the room and the posters on the wall ;) have just little bigs. But things like the keyboard of the LSA Computer just to damm difficult,I could do it...but so much work.
I feel like the angelitos in their caves making light bulbs with litte tools ;)

This really sux, but oh well

Right, its one whole story...
And if you could make a GF 2, can you bring all these atmosphere in the game?
I think its pretty hard or almost impossible.

Great work. If you can develop what you've done for (at the very least) some sexy wallpapers, you've achieved a lot. Going further into an actual game would just be awesome.

You know what? I would like to do some wallpapers,if you want.
But there is one problem, I have just the LSA HQ.
If you have ideas in what way thinks have to stay in the room, oer something like that, say it and Iґll try my best to realise the scene.

I make this, because I missed some happening in the HQ in the game.
But to make a game, and rendering some scenes are very differnet things. In my scene I can have millions ( little less ^^ ) of polygons and great bump maps, but in a game you have rules....but thats another story.

I dont know much about make a game, but there are tools like Dark Basic.

Yeah yeah..so Iam away right now...
We drive to the seeeeeee ^_______^
Happy awaking all =)

Wow. Those are great!

I wish I could do that - I had a go with 3D studio max, but I wasn't at all good with it.

And I can probably be a programmer for you. Because I have a good knowledge of Visual Basic and SLUDGE, but I am learning C++.

Great ideas and stuff you all have here, but I have one question.

If you actually manage to pull this of what is the fun in playing the game then? I mean, wouldn't it be kind of dull if you already knew the plot, puzzles, characters and everything?

It will be fun for the people who didn't make it so therefore don't know the story etc. You could say the same thing about any company - What is teh point in making any game if you know the story:

1)It is fun for other people
2) It is sort of fun to make games.

Yo, I think that it would be easiest to use C++. i know of a few resouces for using it. I am really a noob at C++ because of school. basic vbasic and dark basic are too basic:) .

Yeah, you would use C++. Visual Basic is too basic like you said. And is really useful for tools and 2D games. And Dark Basic is also too basic.

I'm not too good with programming, so I wouldn't be able to help. But to be honest, we better be careful, LucasArts do get very touchy with fan projects. The only GF fan project I'd be happy with would be one developed "unofficialy" by Mr. T. Schafer. By the way does anyone know if Tim actually has an idea for a sequel? There is one programmer, Frederick Raynal, who has the entire plot for the sequel to LBA2 written out, but he can't make it because of copyright issues at the moment.

Hey James, I tried C++ and with this I couldt go further then to make an calculator ;)

For now I have an another big project (MaxtheGame.de (http://www.maxthegame.de/community.html) )
, so I donґt know right now, but I think about it =)
And really, I haver to learn much more about 3dsmax. At time I reach everything with 3dsmax whta I want, but Character animation is my big problem now. I think everybody here could do a better LSA HQ or somethin else. Its not a big deal =)
@Dawidos
Thanks =)
Great thing that so many people around the world are Adventure Fans =)

Well... let me have a think.

To start with, I'd love to make a Tierra de los Muertos game or movie. And Salim, your pictures are really cool. Heck, I've even gone so far to mapping out a Tierra game and everything... although my version of it was relying on what I can do, it was using Adventure Game Studio and being a fully animated one.

So here's the thing: if people are willing, I'd be more than happy to provide the story and voices for a Tierra de los Muertos game or 3D movie. But besides providing story/voices/concept art, I have no knowledge in animating or programming.

The easiest way to start would be a test movie with Tomas Encion in it. Or maybe completely animating the Tierra song with Number Two and Tomas Encion signing 'Just the Way you are'

Thoughts?

You know, I more would like to make something for Tierra, just because I think its to hard to make models or 3d scenes with limits for a engine. But a movie would be great.

To start with " Just the Way you are" is a good idea, just need all infos you can get =)

Here's another wacky notion: before we get started on this thing, let's all get our wills in order first so our families know what to with our earthly possesions after Lucasarts rips our spines out through our chests and feeds us to their president's dogs. Sound like a plan? Let's get to it then. Good times ahead!

well...it could be great....the idea of a Grim Fandango 2-fan made is not new...but i am happy to see people full of eager to start the project.

I don't want to sound pesimist, but i believe the project will never reach its end. Probably going until the first screens...

Whatever we say, projects that start on the net have 99% to end unfinished...and the 1% that does finish, finish after some....years

oh well...don't want to break your wings from the start...just be prepared cause many prblems can risen and end for any the project...

Ok after this rave of mine....

i am in for the script :D still can't program but in a year i might have learned just fine the c++ ;)

Please no Grim Fandango 2. The first one is my favorite adventure game and a sequel just cheapens its legacy. I don't even trust LucasArts to make a proper sequel (see: Full Throttle 2). I don't want to discourage people's personal efforts though so if you do go through with this, just don't tell me about it.

I'd be no help. I know no programming and the only game I ever made was in Adventure Game Studio, and it sucked ass.

But what would you expect from an 11 year old kid?

And I played that demo of GF2 that Raudaschl made (The guy walking about with a gun on a city floor). I thought it was pretty cool.

Tierra de los Muertos 3D stands a good chance though. Heck, I released the entire radio series and never so much as heard a peep from them.

Hmm... this bears some thought.... I can help with the script. Hell, I'm an aspiring novelist, I can write something.... anything.... but it'd have to be short. Let me know. Or I can sing with the fat lady. Whatever, or maybe design ideas.
Yes... I was the one supposed to write a Grim Prequel but... I didn't have as much time on the STUPID COMPUTER *snarls* as I thought I would. -_- But I'm back at school, so I have access there...
