a dot in it. weird...

now I am sinister.eggplant
I was confused (easily so)
by this dot, did not think
an email address would take it
but I am being informed yes it will;
I just want to know what's with the dot?
is this a new computer thing,
I have been seeing more url's
with dots in them...
just would like to know
about the dot, period.
