i dont know if this has been asked already but i'm just firing away :)

I was wondering how the combat issue will be like?

I read somewhere it was about cards. U pick 5 actions eg. Block Block Attack Attack Block

and then the computer does it...

I would rather have it controlled by me..

Does anyone have more information about this?

I do not know, if they are using cards... I hope not. But I know that they are using some kind of turn based combat system. This is so that players with cabe/DSL connections do not have an advantage over 56K players.

I don't know how the combat system is in Everquest, but I'll gues it'll be alike. Not?

yeah greg, it is in real time. Basically you just each choose attacks like you would in a normal game. hotkeys are set up to use a certain attack, like punch. if "0" is you punch hotkey, you press 0 and when you are close enough you click it on the enemy and you'll punch them. that's how I read it.

No, it isnt real time, it's turn based. But I think thats not really a problem, I liked the turn based system in Fallout 2, gives you more control over your actions. You can really role-play a character's style this way (ie. A very agressive wookie, who attacks all the time). But the main reason they put it in is to even the odds for the 56K users.

From the faq on the station:

7.18 How will combat deal with Internet latency?

To help mitigate latency issues, there is a queue used in combat. You do a move, and it goes in line, to be executed next time you have a default move coming up. The move you do may well have a delay (so if you choose the full circle sweep, you may not get to attack again immediately; you may have to wait 3 seconds, for example, and that's the danger of choosing that move). The queue is so you can stack moves for effect, and execute right after one another in the fastest possible way.

So, there you have it: an action queue

yes, it is queue-based, but that's different than turn-based. Final fantasy is turn based. Galaxies is not. Turn based is that whole FF attack style; this isn't. Even though queues are used, it's not turn-based.

Ok ok, try this. Think a turn-based fight style where you aren't just standing still looking like an idiot. You enter in your commands before you do them (like final fantasy), but you can still move your character around. you won't execute the command until you are in the proper locale to do it (ie if you tell your char to punch he won't do it until he is next to the person he is supposed to punch) so in a sense it isn't really turn-based or real time. it's somewhere in between.

You see, this way there won't be as many lag kills as there were in Diablo style games. and god lag was a bitch in those. That and the black wall of death.

Yeah, I would have preferred straight out real time, but I understand the marketing value of this. And it's not that bad....at least compared to a true turn base....that wwould have really sucked.

From what little we know of the combat system I can almost guarantee you it will NOT be like JK2. But it won't be turn based either.

Lightsaber battles in JK2 suck!

Exactly. And lightsaber fighting will be just like any other kind of fighting in the game.....somewhere I posted on the whole card-like thing. It's more turnbased with the attacks and stuff, but not like final fantasy where you just stand there and wait for your turn. You sort of chos your moves in advance, and then the game executes them when the next chance is available. In the mean time, you can maove around as freely as ever. That's the way I understand it. And I agree, jk2 lightsaber fights blow. Maybe if there were more moves or it wasn't so much like jousting it would be good, but I would hate to see SWG have jedis fighting like jk2. No matter though, most of us will probably never have to worry about using a lightsaber. =)

Actually, while the queue system seems fine, and in fact I do like it, I'd prefer a fallout style system. That would kick buttock.

Fallout's system (the S.P.E.C.I.A.L system and the old turnbased mode) is a killer in a singleplayer game. It gets daunting in a multiplayer game (Tactics, anyone?), and would be horrible in a MMORPG. Imagine waiting for 3 hours until everyone on the servar has made their move! Thats why combat has to be in real time.

The way I understand it is SWG will have a cross between the two, like you cue up your moves in advance and hten they are executed in real time. May be awkward, but may be really cool.

Yes, it might require more tactics than the "choose a target, press F5 and then wait until one combatant is dead", as many other MMORPG systems turn out. Can't wait for more substantial info in the matter.

But how does this work when I have my kick ass shoot 850 blastershots in 1 minute uberblaster trying to shoot down a speeder that just stole my cargo? :)

I mean i just cant yell,

"He you there!"

Stop right there so we can fight farely!

Blasters have unlimited range, so....JUST SHOOT!! Of course, you might end up shooting up your speeder and have to by a new one!

I did not realize the game was going to be a turn based combat system. I know many of my friends don't play online games like DAOC/UO because of regular modems. In EQ as well. I personally use a cable modem I hope what ever combat system they use is fluid.
