Hi, Kat--

I'll respond on-topic (as opposed to the stream of consciousness/unconsciousness that precedes me):

Re: Your questions--

"What are you doing right now?" Procrastinating. Posting on the forums when I should be writing a book. (Okay, this is the last post--after this, back to the book.)

"What's your favorite food?" Anything really spicy. Seven-alarm Texas chili, no beans. Shish kebob. Jamaican jerked chicken (with habanero peppers, lime, and allspice). Szechuan anything, with plenty of fiery long red peppers and ginger.

"What's your favorite book?" No contest--THE HOBBIT + THE LORD OF THE RINGS

What's your favorite movie?" POPEYE with Robin Williams. Close runners-up: HARVEY with Jimmy Stewart and THE BISHOP'S WIFE with Cary Grant and Loretta Young. Oh, and BALL OF FIRE with Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck.

I like Tim's quote: "Will you write it down so I don't have to pay attention?" That's such a great line, it was worth getting detention.

My daughter told me one today that was spoken by her US History teacher: "My philosophy is that it is better to ask forgiveness than to ask permission." He was referring to his charge-ahead way of getting things done. Great line.

What am I doing right now: Not what I'd most like to be doing. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/wink.gif) Okay, okay, I'm wasting time after my music appreciation class ended early.

My favourite food: Pepperoni Pizza. I am a connoisseur of pepperoni as some men are of fine wine. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/smile.gif)

My favourite book: Books actually, it's a trilogy, Lucasfilm's Alien Chronicles The Golden One, The Crimson Claw, and The Crystal Eye. It's the sort of story I wanted to write first; a generational character-driven adventure, with truly universal themes of good and evil --with no humans in sight. Not one. The entire cast is alien.

My favourite movie: Hmm, tough one. DragonHeart (the most realistic portrayal of dragonkind that I've ever seen; but still a little naive), Godzilla (Man versus Nature and Nature, ultimately, wins), the last movie I saw (right now, Road To El Dorado, but it'll change soon).

I have a bunch of questions like this that I got from an XWA.net thread a while back, I'll post 'em later.

BeastMaster--

My favourite food: Pepperoni Pizza. I am a connoisseur of pepperoni as some men are of fine wine.

I don't know that I'm a connoisseur of pepperoni (you spelled connoisseur correctly--I'm impressed! I can never do that without help from my spellchecker), but I know what I like. And it seems like the kind of pepperoni I like is getting hard to find nowadays.

It seems like it's hard to get pepperoni that's as spicy-hot as it routinely used to be years ago. It's like the big pizza makers all decided to dumb pepperoni down for popular tastes and make it milder.

To me, a great pepperoni should not make a big puddle of grease when heated (a little red pepperoni grease is normal, but some pepperoni they make these days is ridiculously greasy, and it shrivels down to nothing when cooked). A great pepperoni should be peppery hot but also sweet, with a strong hint of sweet fennel to counterbalance the red pepper.

I had pizza tonight that was made by a little independent pizzeria, not one of the big chains, and the pepperoni was unbelievable, hot and sweet just like I remember it, and sliced rather thicker than what you usually see. Fantastic!

I'm curious to know what a connoisseur would consider to be a great pepperoni.

There's a pizzeria downtown (Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Earth, Sol System http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/wink.gif) ) that has awesome pepperoni.

You can see little grains of pepper and spices in it, and the edges are curled up and just blackened a little so that you can grip them to pull them off the pizza and eat them first. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/smile.gif)

Actually, I also love seafood, but I rarely get a chance to eat it. (The only half-decent seafood restaurant is outside of bus range.)

Seems like the little non-chain pizzerias tend to serve pizza (and pepperoni) with more character and distinction than the big chains.

Of course.

The larger chains are all standardized; they use the same ingredients (bought in bulk and distributed to each outlet) in standardized proportions.

The smaller places have individual variation. Plus power's in the hands of fewer people, meaning that the pizza chef isn't trying to please a committee.

Hi, Kat! http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/biggrin.gif) I'd be delighted to respond...

What am I doing now?Relaxing after a long day's work. After this, some teevee, then bed.

Favorite food? Strangely, my food tastes vary so widely that I don't really have a sound favorite. I'm a professional cook; for me, food is more of a way of life than something to simply enjoy. It should be noted that I once ate an entire cherry cheesecake, and could probably do so again.

Favorite book? I come awfully close to agreeing with Wiz on this, but I'll have to go with Eon by Greg Bear and its sequel, Eternity. They just blew my mind that much...

Favorite movie? Now this is a tough consideration! Ultimately, I'll have to go with Strange Days, but I have to mention Highlander and Star Wars (duh!) just to be fair.

Bonus questions:

Favorite spaceship? The A-wing starfighter is my choice to fly (virtually speaking, that is), but the Voyager gets top billing for class. If I were Emperor of All Space, Voyager would be my yacht.

Favorite sword? Rapier. Although I am a dedicated katana owner, I must bow to the rapier's superior speed and reach. I can deliver a rapier's point much faster than a katana's edge, and that's what it's all about...

Favorite role models? Joan of Arc (
Jeanne D'Arc, as she was actually known,) Benjamin Franklin, Pee-Wee Herman.

Dream career? Japanese sex symbol.

So what's your favorite sword?

I saw the post about swords and had to reply... Id have to say either the Nodachi or Katana. As long as they are made Damascus style. All you would have to do is swing hard at the rapier and it would break. Fight over.
The nodachi's superior reach it's definatly worth it's weight.
The Katana, well, it's just an overall good sword, good speed and good reach.

so I like the rapier, its got a good reach, speed and it requires more skill to handle rather than just brute force.

You're in for a treat with the Greg Bear, Wiz. I've never seen anyone work on the kind of scale he does...

As for Pee-Wee; "Eeek--it's a snake!" 'Nuff said. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/wink.gif)

Ahhhhhhhhhhh...rapier versus katana. Pardon, but this is a subject I've seen debated fluidly at Sword Forum Magazine. Just for general information, a rapier is a thin-bladed sword designed mainly to be used for the point (like those used by the three Musketeers,) while a katana is simply the Japanese word for a Samurai sword--a nodachi being a slightly longer (and yes, heavier) version.

Greetings Adi-Ki-Mundi. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/biggrin.gif) While I, too, enjoy the intricacies and subtlety of the katana (which, by the way, are based on good balance and short turning radius rather than 'brute force'), I feel compelled to explain that it is the rapier's superior reach which earns it my vote. Forgive, but the Jedi who underestimates the reach of a fencer's lunge will soon feel the enemy's sword running through him! As for cutting a rapier blade, bear in mind that some rapiers are quite heavy (I have a Solingen piece which would stop just about any blow), and you aren't going to get a good, clean whack at one in combat. A glancing blow would be the best you could hope from the angle of attack in which a rapier works. If the fencer is stupid enough to get close in, then a katana will cut him in half...but if he stays out where his point attack is an advantage, he should retain the upper ground.

While we're at it, I would like to note that a lightsaber would be a particularly stupid idea for a weapon. There would be no mass in a blade made of laser energy. As a swordsman, I should point out how important the blade's weight is for control; without it, the hand has no way to 'know' where the blade is. I had a wakizashi once (a short version of a Samurai sword) that was perfectly balanced so that the blade seemed weightless, and it was very dangerous to use. I almost cut myself a few times before I finally adapted the handle to rebalance the thing. With a lightsaber, which cuts instantly (and from any angle!), there would be absolutely no room for error. Any Jedi who survived his training would have to be a master indeed!

Whew. Sorry about all this sword-talk, Kat. I didn't mean to hijack your thread...! http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/wink.gif) Do you like to play with knives?

good point with the rapier Zoom... I also think it depends mostly on the level of skill. All i really know are the Tai Chi forms for the katana. Sad but true, i would get my a$$ kicked in a real fight. But I still hold true, the elegance and style of Katana fighting is unrivaled in my opinion.
I think a rapier might have the upper hand from it's speed, but since I love the katana so much, I am biased.

I also agree that a lightsaber would be the hardest sword to weild. Balance on a blade is essential in fighting. There's no argument there. But i still want one and I would play with it all the time... just really carefully. You can't get much cooler than a blade of energy.

by the way, have you ever played the game bushido blade, or Bushido Blade 2. I love those games, got them both when they came out. But i'm a huge Square fan, so i loved them even though they had flaws.

Hey, all of my martial arts instruction was at the 'Highlander' school of fencing... They say the most dangerous warrior of all in the melee is the one who has no clue what he's supposed to be doing. I'd say that makes me pretty dangerous. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/wink.gif)

I tried the Nintendo 64 game Dark Rift once, where some of the characters wield swords, but I found it more an experience in button-pushing than swordsmanship. I'm more a fan of starfighter simulations like Rogue Squadron or X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, which are more suited to the computer to begin with. For swordplay, I have an old bicycle frame hanging from a tree in the back yard which makes a good sparring partner.

I used to make my friends spar with me when they came over, but they soon figured out it was best just to say no. Harumph. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/frown.gif)

Now where has Kat gone...? I think we scared here away with the sword talk. Here kitty--!

Hey, Crackhead! I didn't know you visited these boards, welcome from the Flying Beastie. (BTW, you stole some of my answers. http://www.jediknight.net/mboard/tongue.gif) )

Fave Starship: Easy, the WhiteStar from Babylon 5. I'm into spacecraft like some guys are into cars, and nothing matches the WhiteStar's curves; she's just gorgeous.

Fave Sword: Tie between a rapier (I'm a Musketeer wannabe) and a two-handed broadsword (like the Master Sword in Zelda 64). Between the two of them, I'd be deadly.

Fave Role Model: Tie between Qui-gon Jinn and Commander "Chuckles" Chakotay (from Star Trek Voyager).
